Can I use a laptop as an extra monitor for a desktop

So tomorrow I am getting the parts for my new computer for Christmas. For awhile I've been using just my laptop as my main computer. After awhile I started been using my 22'' monitor as an external one for my laptop. I've gotten so used to using two monitors now I don't think I can go back. What I was wondering is if I can using my laptop as just a secondary monitor with my main monitor and my desktop
This is coming out of my ass, but usually I think laptops are designed to output video, not necessarily take an input stream.
If they are on the same network you can use Maxivista (Payware)
There is a free alternative, Zonescreen, but I have found it to be a bit unreliable.
These network based solutions don't work for fast-moving content either.
output only, only by network, slow, etc.
this question has been asked a million times you could easily search it
You can, but you have to detach the screen and rewire it.
You would be better off finding a hardware surplus store and grabbing a CRT for $10-20
I got a 21' Trinitron for $15 8 years ago. Best monitor I've ever owned. Using it right now.
1. Go to Goodwill/Red Cross/Salvation Army
2. Find electronics section

Yes, but not directly. There is an application called Synergy and its available for free at source forge. You just set them up on the same network and follow the wizard to get everything configured. There is some latency to it, but it is quite low. Its good for things besides games etc. For browsing it works fine for me.
You could also maybe get a TV tuner that takes VGA or HDMI, or get an adapter cable to adapt your desktop to whatever plug the TV tuner takes. But you may as well buy a surplus/refurb monitor unless you're also going to use the TV Tuner for recording cable.

You can kind of do it with X11 forwarding if you're badass like that.
