Amazon's sales fees are always rediculous.
50% markup on kindle accessories, for instance
12% sales fee compared to Etsy's 3.5% is pretty big...
If you had never heard of Etsy and had the choice of either ordering on Amazon on Etsy (that might as well be a sketchy site), would you actually order on Etsy, even if things were a little bit cheaper?
In the end, you would likely choose Amazon, because you would generally either already know then or know people who have experience with it.
Besides, if you're a seller, Amazon is unarguably a much bigger and more known outlet than Etsy so getting a chance to sell there is a plus, since they're more likely to sell more than just Etsy.
For consumers using Amazon has the plus of being a well known company that is more or less reliable, and for sellers Amazon has the plus of having a much larger user base. They will sell more so they could usually afford to lower the margin to match the price on Etsy (if they wanted to or were contractually obligated to).

Anyone at least in the US though in the market for these goods have. Both points certainly have merit.

one point is an analysis of behaviors regarding consumer trust that says nothing about the quality of etsy, the other is a post defending etsy from a perceived (but imaginary) criticism
so
no, they don't both have merit

Etsy isn't that specific. They have a good grasp on the core market, for sure, but a lot more people would buy handmade goods if they just found them on Amazon (or on Google, where Amazon would certainly rank higher).
