• Computer Won't Start -- Shuts down after 3-5 Seconds

Ugh... after a long day of AP testing, I come back to go on my computer, when I found out that it doesn't start, or at least for very long. The other night I had set it to sleep mode. I couldn't resume the computer from sleepmode, so I had shut it off. Then I had attempted to boot it up again, this time, it started for 3-5 seconds and shut off; the BIOS message does not appear nor does the POST. Fans and everything internally appear to be running fine though for the small amount of time. I do not have an internal speaker so I can't check for beep codes. Troubleshooting I have tried: - Checked for loose cables - Disassembled / Reassembled computer and cleaned out dust - Cleared the CMOS - Removed the CMOS battery for ~3 minutes - Booted computer without CMOS battery in - Replaced PSU - Booted computer without HDD, optical, and video card; each separate tests Please, if you have any suggestions, POST! I want to get back to my miscellaneous activities on my computer. :( Specs: OS: Windows 7 Professional x64 MOBO: ASUS Crosshair AM2 Nvidia nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD MEMORY: (2x) 1GB RAM DDR2 PC6400 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+ 2.80 Ghz GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 -- 192 cores HDD: 1TB SATA PSU: Cooler Master 600W Extreme Power MONITOR: Dell 19" LCD 1280 x 1024 x 60 hertz
Try using an alternate power supply
Does your mobo beep when this happens? Could be bad RAM.
Does your mobo beep when this happens? Could be bad RAM.
I don't even have an on board speaker. It apparently didn't come with my motherboard so I couldn't check any beep codes. :| Tomorrow I'm going to go get a new power supply and see if it works. If that's not the case, I'll probably get a speaker.
To be 100% honest, I've had a power button go bad. It was corroded on the inside, where the contacts were always touching, causing the PC to turn off after 5 seconds of plugging it in. I replaced the power switch, and all was fixed.
If you press the power button and nothing happens, not even the fans turn on, or any indication there is any power supply. Verify that the connectors from the button to the board are properly set up. If they are, you got a bad power supply or a fracture right by those pins.
Ok, I went and bought a power supply replacement today and it didn't work. My computer still shuts off after 3-5 seconds with no POST or BIOS message. Now I'm down to either a fried motherboard or CPU. It could also be bad RAM, but I doubt it's that; I'm going to replace my RAM in a few minutes to give it a try though. I said that the computer turns on. All fans run, everything is normal except for the fact that it shuts off after 3-5 seconds.

Well, you got 4 pieces of hardware that could be the mix. Motherboard, Fracture (hairline or visible). CPU, dead RAM, one or both sticks dead. Try stick 1, then power up. If it doesn't power up, try stick 2. Video, dead This is easier if you got a P88 or LED Diagnostics Indicator, or perhaps even just a simple system speaker. I know asus boards usually have 4 LED lights, even sometimes a 2x7segment LED port that gives off a code into indicating what the problem is.
I had this problem before. Turned out the CPU died. If it's still under warranty get it replaced, and buy a damn PC speaker. Helps alot in these times.
buy a damn PC speaker
Heh, trust me, I'm trying. It turns out it's near damn impossible to find them anywhere. I thought for sure Radioshack would have them; unfortunately, they don't. I'll keep trying though.

Mobo is dead, I had the same thing with a brand new gygabite motherboard. system would powerup for a short amount of time (2-4sec) then turn itself down, no beep, no visual.
Hurray, I got a new motherboard and it worked! Problem Solved.
