Star Trek 3 will be heading in a new direction after the departure of Roberto Orci as director.
Deadline is reporting that Roberto Orci will no longer be the director of Star Trek 3, but he will stay on as a producer. The report does not say whose decision it was to have Orci leave, but more than likely it was the decision of Paramount, as Orci would have little reason to depart the project. However, his decision to stay on as a producer might point to it being his decision.
To date, Orci has never directed a film. He has had a successful screenwriting career with former writing partner Alex Kurtzman before they recently decided to pursue individual film projects. They remain partners on TV projects. Together they wrote Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the latter with Damon Lindelof.
The report claims that Paramount already has a shortlist of directors they would like to see take over Star Trek 3, and the shortlist reportedly includes Edgar Wright, among others.

EXCLUSIVE: Roberto Orci is beaming off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek 3. Rampant rumors are swirling and I've confirmed there is fire behind the smoke that he won't be directing. I even hear that Edgar Wright and others are on a short list to take the job. Orci stays on the project as producer, I've heard.
As long as it doesn't suck as much as Into Darkness did, I'll take it.

Into the Darkness was alright.
No cinematographic miracle but it was a fun movie.
Into Darkness was "okay" but it was overloaded with references instead of something original or logical.

It kinda couldn't decide if it's a proper reboot or a loose remake with some twists to throw people off.

The Continuum sends everybody's favourite Q to restore the timeline to the original one while the Enterprise futilely tries to stop him at first and fucks up the timeline even more, then they join forces to fight J.J. Abrahms, who is actually a disgruntled Q trying to get revenge on The Continuum.

Very similar but still different.

The keyword in the title is 'may'.
I'd really like to see him get Star Trek 3, especially after getting fired from Ant-Man.

Why did we just accept the stupid reset of movie numbers when at the "first" one we all made fun of it?

We might if Michael Dorn (Worf) gets his way, hes been trying to pitch a new series with him as captain and he wants to bring back a lot of people to guest star.
On top of that Netflix has been begging to host a new ST series, Viacom just needs to unfasten its chasity belt.
Star Trek series have been in the top ranges of popularity on Netflix which represeants 34 percent of all internet traffic in North America at peak times. That's such a huge fuckin audience watching reruns.
As long as that fuckwit Orci isn't involved, I'll have some level of interest.
Edgar Wright is good at giving a good twist on movies thematically and cinematically. I'm excited to see what he's going to do with Star Trek
I think they should get Jonathan Frakes to do it.
All I want for the third movie is it to introduce the Borg. Star Trek: First Contact is still by far my favorite one and I can't even imagine how awesome they could make the Borg with modern CGI.

First Contact was garbage, the series introduced the Borg much better.
Good god I hope not
Look at an Edgar Wright film, and look at any form of Star Trek media. I know the internet in general has a boner for Edgar Wright, but that's the most inconsistent choice I can seriously think of.
I could very easily be wrong but I think my skepticism is very healthy

First Contact was decent up until they came up with [sp]the borg queen[/sp]. That kinda ruined the borg for me, especially after they decided to put it in Voyager as well.
Wright apparently directed a single shot of Into Darkness. A small homecoming.

Yeah, I honestly can't see his directing working well with Star Trek. He's a great director, but this is a pretty far out choice.
Star Trek: The Force Awakens
Why not a new TV series
Why not a new TV series
I don't know what they could do with a new tv series.
Voyager tied up the whole [sp]"borg" thing rather nicely, any series set chronologically after would inevitably try to bring them back in some convoluted way.[/sp] In addition, the franchise was loosing its utopian optimistic future overtones by that point.
They could do another prequel series like Enterprise, but as I recall a lot of people didn't like Enterprise.
Spock didn't just slingshot around a sun to time travel, he used red matter, which brought unforeseen consequences with it - phasers don't shoot beams anymore and Khan has turned white. For a TV series to work all they'd have to do is bring back Lt. DeSalle from TOS as a captain, have a crewmate get infested with an alien intelligence and just make Fringe in space for five seasons.
Why not a new TV series
I hope not, I'm certain they'd reboot the soul out of it.
Why can't they let a franchise die in dignity?

I see you've never watched Enterprise. Just go look up the Enterprise theme and tell me if you feel like you're going to be watching a Star Trek series.
They could always revive it within the movie universe, getting around that pesky Borg issue.

I can't tell if you mean this as an insult or a compliment to Enterprise.
