In Bergen County being unemployed may get you thrown in jail. Bergen County residents who are jobless and have fallen behind on child support or alimony payments face indefinite incarceration in the Bergen County Jail’s “Work Release” program.
Brought before a judge every two weeks unemployed parents incarcerated in the “work release” program are required to report their efforts in finding a job. Being unemployed in Superior Court in Bergen County is considered to be by choice and puts you in contempt of court.
For the long term unemployed this may mean a long term in jail.

Reynaldo, a former commodity broker who earned at one time over $250K per year lost his job to technology when the trading floor was automated. Jorge, then, 48 years old with no college degree, found himself unemployed and ordered to pay $4300 per month in spousal and child support.
This was not Reynaldo’s first experience with the Bergen County Jail; in 2011 he spent 10 months in the “work release” program when over 80% of his gross earnings were taken by the jail under the terms of the “work release” contract. In 2013 Reynaldo refused to sign that contract.
Despite his refusal to “opt” in to the work release program Jorge was ordered in to the ‘work release” by Judge Ronnie Jo Siegal. Siegal told Reynaldo that he would have to comply with the work release program because it was now a “court order”.
Unemployed without any money left to pay their alimony/child support are being placed into "work release" programs. Unable to find a job in 2 weeks? Contempt of court, go to jail. Find a job? The work release program takes most of their wages(At which point the rest of their wage goes towards backpayments towards whatever court ordered payment they have) and are arrested again for failing to pay. So not only does it mean the guy has nothing to live off of, the recipients of the child support/alimony are being shafted by the county as well.
A class action lawsuit has been filed against the county.
wow what the fuck is this this judge is the biggest dick
Still though, 60k in child support a year. Do her kids eat diamonds?

Look again: the breakfast cereals are now diamonds!
This scheme strikes as nothing more than blackmail by corrupt court. And I suspect that this practice can live due to common attitude of contempt towards the unemployed.
So, instead of actively working towards getting more jobs so the unemployed can work, they decide to just lock them up. What a lazy and asshole-ish way to not want to deal with it. This judge needs to go jail.
I really hate how my country treats the poor and less fortunate.
Looks like we're going back to the 19th century.
So NJ bans the sales of Tesla vehicles without a dealership one week... and has been exploiting and abusing unemployed families for... how many years now?
Good Lord, I hope that collapses in on them soon.

I speak for all of us sane citizens of NJ when I say that I'm sorry that we seem to have such a loud minority of imbeciles and scumbags
what the fuck, 4000 a month in child support? that's almost 50k a year. why bother working when your ex can just pay for everything.
i can't wait to get the fuck out of this state when i have the money to do so.

It's pretty much North Jersey that has all the corruption. It's the shit stains from NYC.

Ought to start an NJ FP colony in PA to escape :v:
I'm game for it
This sounds like outright slavery.
I can see New Jersey is doing a great job keeping these dangerous criminals from harming innocent, upstanding members of society.
So who said there is no discrimination against men in the USA?

Holy fuck. This is the exact kind of thing a right-wing nut would say about the poor, that they just don't have ambition and deserve no sympathy.

Nobody, but let's not make this about gender, thanks.

Child support is about gender though. 9 times out of 10 mother will get custody of kids just because (unless there's something glaringly wrong with them). This puts divorced fathers at a serious financial disadvantage which leads to things like this.
I do hope y'all Americans get your massive problems fixed one century.
Wow, this is fucking insane.
It's almost like New Jersey is trying to be the worst state ever.
Not that it needs to try.

I live here and I can confirm that a bunch of rich assholes do live here too.

That's okay, men make more money than women anyway! :v:
Nobody, but let's not make this about gender, thanks.
but that's what the women always do except then you don't have some shit american moderator banning them for it
Hey look at the bright side as long as you don't ever get married or have children everything will be fine!
not going to lie, if I was in that guy's position, I'd probably flee the state and hope that other states weren't also completely batshit insane
also hope that the whole "states don't return slaves to slave holding states" thing still applies
Holy shit, this is the real life version of the judge from that episode of Futurama where Fry get's sent to the asylum for insane robots.
but that's what the women always do except then you don't have some shit american moderator banning them for it
How the hell would a moderator be able to tell if they what gender they were?

go back to r/mensrights, you're not welcome here

Most custody cases result in joint custody, your claim that women get sole custody 90% of the time is asinine. (If that is your claim. If your complaint is that 90% of mothers get to share custody of their children, then I don't even know what to say)
In cases where either parent is denied access to their children it's going to be because they either didn't want it or because there was abuse. As for why children generally live with the mother after a divorce it's because married men typically work full time jobs and no judge concerned with child welfare is going to place the children with a parent who will be gone for 8-12 hours every day.

Return to /pol/.
This sounds like a catch 22 situation.
