AirAsia flight QZ8501 climbed too fast before stalling and crashing into the Java Sea with the loss of 162 lives, Indonesia's transport minister says.
Ignasius Jonan told a parliamentary hearing in Jakarta the jet climbed at a speed of 6,000ft (1,828m) per minute.
No passenger or fighter jet would attempt to climb that fast, Indonesian media reported Mr Jonan as saying.
...
"It is unlikely that a fighter jet would increase its flight level at a speed of 6,000ft per minute," he was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post.
"The average speed of a commercial aircraft is probably between 1,000 and 2,000ft per minute because the aircraft is not designed to soar so fast," he told a House of Representatives commission.
By the sound of things it could've hit a strong updraft of some sort.
Panic in the middle of a storm so the pilot try to go over it without any thought for the capabilities of his aircraft.
How many G's would that equate to?
How many G's would that equate to?
G's are for acceleration, not speed.
G's are for acceleration, not speed.
I misread I thought they said it accelerated to 6000ft/min from 1000-2000ft/min within a minute.
Okay, yeah, that's ridiculous for a passenger jet, but this guy's a bit nuts saying a fighter jet wouldn't do it. Modern fighters have a >1 TWR, you can go up faster than that literally just by pointing the nose vertical and flooring it. 6000ft/min is "only" 70mph.
The captain was a highly experienced ex-Air Force pilot with 20,000 flying hours including more than 6,000 in the A320 so there must have been some serious shit going down for him to attempt such a steep climb

As someone who is moving country on the 5th of february and is scared shitless of flying....this is not welcome information.
obligatory you are more likely to die on the way to the airport post
can confirm; tried to go to an airport last week and died. flight was fine though
Time to sack them to save lives obviously, reckless drivers, are they drunk?
#AirAsia number 1 flight crasher!
Edited:
Would you want to fly with AirAsia if they crash all the time?

Not even solid proof, It's just a timetable of nothing, stop acting like you know it all, I'm not even going to reply to idiots like you anymore.

Well aren't you sunshines and rainbows
Instrumentation failure?
Looking a lot like a storm-related accident with other factors, like AF447. Perhaps there is something more to the issues with instrumentation (the pitot tubes in particular) in storm conditions, than they thought after that incident. I'm sure they'll be thinking it if it's at all feasible.

Spoiler: he was an alt.
My speculation: They knew they were about to hit some shit weather so the pilot tried doing a steep circular climb to get over the ceiling. 6kfpm is insanse to do it with however.
Spoiler: he was an alt.
Not gonna tell us of who? :v:
In other news, this is really spooky. If the guy was such a trained pilot I honestly wonder what led them to perform such a drastic manoeuvre
I wonder if the pilots were trying to recover from the stall when the plane hit the water.
It seems like a really strange thing to happen, you'd think that the pilots would have climbed at a sustainable rate - they would have had enough flying experience to be instinctively aware of what is and what isn't a suitable angle of attack for their plane.
Instrumentation failure?
Sounds like it. When this first happened, the prevailing theory was that the pitot tubes may have frozen over leading to some false readings
That rate of climb throws that for a bit of a loop though
