Your power supply probably doesn't have the juice to run it. Whats your wattage?

If it's been working fine for a long time and is now just crapping out it may be that it's overheating and failing. That happened with my 8800. Survived 2 years and then one day just started bluescreening like crazy.

It runs of the fucking PCI-E slot
it barley draws much power
OP, your card is probably dying. My 8600 GT didn't last long at all.
8600GTs suck that way

This happened to my old 8600. The bluescreening was due to overheating, but I could solve the locking-up issues in games by using older drivers.
