Plus-sized parking spaces provides wider room for Chinese women drivers
The parking spaces outside a Chinese shopping mall are distinctive: marked out in pink, signposted "Respectfully reserved for women", and around 30 centimetres wider than normal.
The slots at the Dashijiedaduhui -- or "World Metropolis" -- centre have sparked debate in China, which officially embraces gender equality but where old-fashioned sexism is rife in reality.
The mall, in the centre of the northern port city of Dalian, has little to distinguish itself from thousands of other retail complexes that have sprouted across the country as part of a vast urbanisation drive.
It boasts chain clothing stores, fast food franchises, glass lifts, a cinema and the inevitable Starbucks, a favourite hangout of China's new middle class.
Unusually, though, the 10 spaces outside the main entrance were provided after women had trouble parking in the standard basement slots, managers said.
"I think this is very convenient," said user Yong Mei. "Other parking spaces are too narrow."
"It's not gender biased," she told AFP. "It's just that women have a few issues with vision when parking."
But outraged commentators on Chinese social media accused the mall managers of sexism and cliched thinking.
"This is supposed to respect women, but actually it's an insult," said one.
The mall managers deny the allegation. "We just wanted to make things easier for women, who make up most of our customers," said Yang Hongjun, a woman herself.
"It's not an insult to women at all," she added. "If their parking spaces are larger, it's only for practical reasons. It doesn't mean that women drive less well than men."
I.... what? How exactly does being a woman suddenly make you vision impaired the second your vehicle nears the dreaded enemy known as the parking spot?

I'm sure they wanted to make a bunch of direct stereotypes
but they'd be fired from their jobs
Think how bad it is to even just come out and say/do this for chinese women drivers
lady who said all this has a hard time not contradicting themselves every other sentence
It IS definitely gender biased, but it is based somewhat in truth. Females are known to have somewhat worse spacial awareness than males in general which is where a lot of the stereotypes about women being bad parking/navigators/etc come from.
It IS definitely
How are you even supposed to read that?

I meant to decapitalise both words and italicise them, but I guess I forgot half way :v:

Do we know specifically why? I heard it was because in hunter-gatherer societies men traveled further from home, and the ones who couldn't find their way back, well, didn't get to pass on their genes. Though the source was kind of sketchy.
Richmond apparently tried this but removed them because they discriminated against women.

Bet you can't say that three times in a row. :v:

I think that's the general idea. Men with shitty spacial awareness in the kind of societies that we're descendant from were less likely to make it home (for obvious reasons) and pass their genes on, so the trait of good spacial awareness very rapidly accumulated in the male population, whereas the females remained back at the camp, took care of the young, and didn't venture too far away to gather food so didn't really have any need of that trait.
how about we make parking spaces bigger for everybody so that you can open your car door more than 1 inch
how about we make parking spaces bigger for everybody so that you can open your car door more than 1 inch
This would be a nice idea. Also, if some asshole like 5 cars down parks REALLY badly it can fuck things up for everyone subsequently. Everyone always assumes it's the idiot next to them who can't park, but he might just have parked badly because the guy who was parked next to him before was parked badly (etc, etc).
Idk about this being gender specific. I'd rather have spaces like those be for everyone since sometimes, you get squeezed in there tighter than a vice grip.
On a more personal note, the majority of Chinese women here in Argentina that I see wear glasses... so this could make sense.

And reduce the amount of cars you can park by 10 - 15%?
This does remind me a little of some places in Germany where I've seen 'women's parking spots', mostly in parking cellars. They're more well-lit and closer to the entrance, and a bit wider.
Perpetuating old stereotypes huh?
From what i've seen people under either gender can be shitty drivers. It has nothing to do with sex, it's all down to experience.
I love how they try denying that it's biased when it can't be anything else really.
It's scientific fact, and it'll probably be covered in any semi-decent psychology course. Women and men DO differ; psychologically as well as the physiologically. It's not true for everyone obviously, but especially in biology and psychology there's not an awful lot other than the basics that does really hold true in all cases. It's an average.
I need this. I resent that I fall into the "women can't park stereotype" but I am undeniably shit at it

Protip: reverse parking is way easier than parking forward because the car pivots in a more logical place.
While I am driving a car for like 4 years now, I can't say I enjoy parking into small spots, and parallel parking is something I rarely dare to attempt.

Women in Germany must be some privileged class of people.
Dr Marcia Collaer, a behavioural neuroscientist at Middlebury College in Vermont, says that the link between the angles task and navigation ability is not backed up with empirical evidence, but it is worth considering.
Wasn't there a rule in SH about "if you make a claim, you better have some evidence to back it up"?
Yeah there's differences between men and women, but I doubt the whole "women can't drive" thing is just a myth.

This is probably to stop them from being attacked in the dark corners of the parking garage, and not about making it easier to park.

It's a blob of Chinese characters, should be pronounced "da shir jei - da du hui" since there's 2 parts to it.
Interesting enough, dashijie is a franchise shopping mall. They go around and build the exact same designed malls around china. As in, you can go to one in Beijing, then one in Shanghai, and they'll be identical except what shops there are inside.

I've heard that in a similar vein, women have a better sense of smell on average than men.
Has the performance of male and female drivers ever been tested scientifically to see if there's a legitimate difference?
What if their secret plan is to piss the women off and then whenever they park they're like 'I'LL SHOW THOSE DAMN MEN' and they park super good.

When men rode their woolly mammoths home after a hard day hunting saber-toothed tigers, they had to park them in the small designated woolly mammoth corral. If you didn't learn how to do that then your mammoth was towed and now how are you going to feed your family? So men learned to park dammit!

I have also heard women tend to have better eyesight or they see color more vibrantly, although now-a-days it matters for little since there are so many ways both genders can royally fuck up their eyes.
