DON’'T blame Apple for the constant program crashes on the Macintosh computer of the '90s - it's all Microsoft’s fault.
So says Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who is in Australia for a speaking tour covering the company’s business philosophy and the legacy of Steve Jobs.
Wozniak told a seminar in Sydney this morning he had discovered a flaw in Internet Explorer in 1996 that caused programs in the Macintosh to crash.
"Everyone who ran Internet Explorer you would have several crashes, every day,” he said.
"Move something into folder, it would crash, and you’d have to restart. Type something, crash restart.
"Everyone thought it was the OS (Apple’s operating system). I guess it kind of was because it was allowing all this to happen. But in reality it was Microsoft Internet Explorer."
The engineer who built Apple’s first computer series, the Apple I and II, said he found that people who ran Netscape or another program from Germany called ICAP, never experienced crashes.
But he acknowledged that once a computer got a bad name, it stayed bad forever.
He said that was exactly what happened with the its next incarnation, aimed at the business world, which basically allowed users to alternate between the Apple II to an Apple III with the flick of a switch.
"That turned out to be a horrible decision,” he said. “It missed its window. Maybe it would have been successful if we rebranded it and called it the Apple four. But we kept calling it a three. It was a big failure for Apple."
Earlier Wozniak gave an interview to Bloomberg saying he would buy Facebook shares regardless of the price.
"I would invest in Facebook,” he said in an interview yesterday on Bloomberg Television. I don’t care what the opening price is."
The social networking giant plans to raise as much as $11.8 billion in an initial public offering set to go ahead on May 17.
Wozniak is at the Sydney Convention Centre in Darling Harbour today before heading to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre tomorrow.

I think Internet Explorer just sucked in general.

I'd say it just sucks in general.
everything from the 90s sucked
including us

Even the shittiest thing you can buy today will be easy to use and stable but I guess I am just saying things that everyone already knows.

Meergh back in mah day as a young whiffersnapper we all used internet explorer, and we waited 25 minutes for a web page to load, when i first used it i thought " Geee papa this sure is fast!"
Now all our kids are using googley Crom, mozzerala firefox and disrespecting us elders!
That's bullshit. The main issue was that PC's picked up the Protected Memory mode flag when the 386 came out in the 80's. Apple's systems had no clue of what Protected Mode was until OS X so you were at the mercy of the programmer to get it right.
so who is to blame for apple sucking a lot in all the other decades???
Sounds like something Microsoft would do.
I'm starting to like wozniak less and less. He goes back on what he says a lot and changes his opinion often on things.
Like how before he condemned the iphone, loved the android. Now he says android ripped off ios and windows phones are now the best.

that just means he's not a robot.
he's still the same brilliant engineer who helped set the home computer revolution in motion.
Because why blame yourselves when you can blame competition from another company.
Wasn't Microsoft the one to HELP them?
Wasn't Microsoft the one to HELP them?
Help is a strong word.
Microsoft has been known to play a little dirty when it came to designing programs:

Microsoft was sleazy in the 90s. Even more sleazy than they are today.

And Apple must've learned from the best then.

I don't know why apple made out that Windows in the 90's was going through hell seeing as when I used windows 95/98 when I was a kid it was a blast and I knew what I was doing, never had to type in long commands and all that other bullshit.
I'm sure MS-DOS wasn't that much of a pain in the ass too.
I'm sure MS-DOS wasn't that much of a pain in the ass too.
MS-DOS was surprisingly simple and robust, it was pretty common to find yourself only typing a few of the same commands. "DIR" for directory+file list, "CD [folder name]" to navigate into folders (or "CD .." to navigate out), and "A:" to access your disk drive. Running programs was a matter of simply navigating to its location and typing its name (or typing its name and location in full).
If you had XTree and a mouse, drive navigation was very similar to how we do it now. Just, y'know. Nowhere near as pretty.
Hello I'm 25 and played dad's computer games as babby, MS-DOS represent!!!!

Apple always had a certain arrogance to them, and I think because of that, I'd go with MS.
Wozniak sure has become quite opinionated here recently.
Next thing you know: wozniak believes apple are funded by terrorists, Microsoft are jedis of technology and Jews will start WW3
Apple have been acting like a small child recently. What's happened to them?
Apple have been acting like a small child recently. What's happened to them?
Nothing apparently.
Apple have been acting like a small child recently. What's happened to them?
Recently?
I don't think you have been paying much attention to them.

Let's not turn this into a battle of who began wasting away their lives on games the earliest please.

Guess that's the problem.
Weren't Civ and Cannon Fodder on the Commodore Amiga?
We had one of those as well. I loved that thing. We never did DOS, though. Went directly to win 98.
