Google is pondering a floating data center that could be powered and cooled by the ocean. These offshore data centers could sit 3 to 7 miles offshore and reside in about 50 to 70 meters of water.
The search giant filed for a patent in February. The patent outlines a concept that would not only be savvy engineering, but deliver great returns. Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge called Google's patent a "startling new take on data center engineering." I'd call it brilliant engineering, but the financial engineering could be even more impressive.

Google's idea for offshore data centers isn't necessarily new. A company called IDS has plans to build data centers on cargo ships, but these would be tethered to a pier. Google is talking about a self-contained unit (excluding bandwidth connections) that would sit offshore much like an oil rig.
As Miller points out Google's idea uses the Pelamis Wave Energy Converter units to create a wave farm Google reckons that it can cobble together enough units to create about 40 megawatts of power. Seawater would cool these data centers.

Meanwhile, Google describes deployments that could scale easily. These data centers would be modular, constructed on land in standard shipping containers, hauled via truck to ships and then deployed. The ship carrying these data centers could anchor where "tidal motion is sufficiently strong or large so as to permit electrical generation and pumping power."
Pontoons would be connected together to form an ocean network of sorts that would generate electricity and harvest wave energy.
These modules could be swapped as technology advances or units wear out "under adverse sea conditions."
Google added that its patent on offshore data centers is really the beginning.
essentially google wants to build self-sustaining data centers in the fucking ocean.
If google takes over the world I would be ok with that.
An awesome company, but that thing with Youtube annoys the shit out of me.
An awesome company, but that thing with Youtube annoys the shit out of me.
The copyright BS?
I hate this google+ bullshit though.
And as mentioned the thing with youtube. I can't even change from my email address on my youtube account any more.
The copyright BS?
no the "Would you like to use your real name on YouTube" and if you say no it goes "Aw well here's a google+ page instead"
So google want to make their own Big Shell/Arsenal Gear?
Isn't seawater fairly corrosive, though? I'd imagine maintenance would be more expensive than on land.
Part of me really does want Google to be the company that takes over the world, but I would much rather it be a company that's a bit more fun, if that makes any sense. Them trying to tie everything to real names puts me off a bit.
Basically what I'm saying is garry needs to sell the shit out of Rust and establish the Fourth Reich already.

Floating structures can be made out of concrete. I think a lot of oil rig pontoons are made from concrete.
I don't expect to see this... ever.
no the "Would you like to use your real name on YouTube" and if you say no it goes "Aw well here's a google+ page instead"
Oh that. It's like they're trying to tag people to make it easier to sue and ban them from the site or make people who leave comments look bad.
no the "Would you like to use your real name on YouTube" and if you say no it goes "Aw well here's a google+ page instead"
Someone with over 100,000 subscribers decided to accept it and use his real name on YouTube. He lost all his subscribers in the conversion.
The copyright BS?
And the complete failing to understand that a user wants to see JUST the uploaded videos by someone they subscribed to when they click their name. And that they also JUST want a synopsis of recent uploads by their subscriptions only on their homepage. None of that recommended bullshit.
Oh that. It's like they're trying to tag people to make it easier to sue and ban them from the site or make people who leave comments look bad.
They believe that if people have to use their real names on the internet, then they will act less asshatish without anonymity. I can only imagine the guys working at Google must be pissed off by the general quality of Youtube comments.
So google want to make their own Big Shell/Arsenal Gear?
as long as i can have an AI spouting nonsense at me i would work on their big shell in an instant

You can't stop that...unless you're Jay and Silent Bob:

Oh no, a Google+ page you never have to use.
I hate this google+ bullshit though.

Yeah, I had an absolutely nightmarish time fixing an email issue recently.
Yeah, I had an absolutely nightmarish time fixing an email issue recently.
I have a legacy youtube account, and I want to remove gmail from my google account and said youtube account, and use another email address instead, but google simply won't let me do that. >:(
Launch it off Somalia and watch internet piracy go next level.
I had to upgrade to g+ so I could rate apps on the Play Store. Jeez.
So essentially Google is creating their own Rapture? Free of all governments, free to store whatever without the worry of information censorship/NSA/copyright?

"I am Larry Page, and I am here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the results of his search?
'No,' says the man in Washington, 'it belongs to the NSA.'
'No,' says the man at Bing, 'it belongs to Microsoft.'
'No,' says the man at Ask, 'it belongs to InterActiveCorp.'
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Google."

Concrete takes a beating from seawater too.
They will need security to defend against the pirates bay.

If it means we get a glitchy AI that describes how amazing it is when the famous, purple stuffed worm from flap-jaw space, with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hara-kiri Rock, I'd say it's worth it.

Does it need scissors?
