[release]
Iran's state TV is reporting the country has produced laser-guided artillery shells, capable of hitting moving targets with high accuracy.
The Monday report quoting Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi also says that the shell was an "intelligent" munition with the capability to identify its own targets.
The report was accompanied by footage showing an artillery piece firing a shell, followed by an explosion in the desert.
The report does not give details on specifications of the shell. It could not be independently verified.
Iran occasionally announces the production and testing of military equipment, ranging from torpedoes to missiles and jet fighters.
The country's military has run a program dating from 1992 which aims at self-sufficiency in producing modern weaponry.[/release]

Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi attended the unveiling ceremony in the capital Tehran on Monday.
The general said that it is the first time that such ammunition has been designed and manufactured by Iranian experts in the Defense Industry Organization.
He added that Basir is designed to destroy tanks, military vehicles, bridges, and other moving or non-moving targets with high precision. It is also capable of identifying and locating targets.
General Vahidi noted that the projectile, which has a range of 20 km, is very useful in mountainous areas.
Iran is among top five countries capable of producing smart weapons using indigenous technology, he added.
The Islamic Republic has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems in recent years.
Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially regional neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.[/release]
Pretty sure they are not as shit as everyone thinks. Even though they still use aging US equipment.
Yeah, well, we have laser-guided Bullets now.(we will soon anyways)
They claim it is for deterrence, but in reality it is the complete opposite; announcements like these liken to provocation of other countries such as the United States. Pretty much dickwaving like North Korea did with the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island last year IMO.
I'm more concerned about their missiles and photoshopping skills.

*shudders*
Thats cool tech I did not know it existed in actual usage. Laze a target and then artillery guides itself down without the need for precision fire and compensation?

Isn't dickwaving itself a deterrent. I mean you don't exactly wave weapons around to show the world how cool you are, you wave them around to show the world not to fuck with you.

I think they are trying to project self reliance. In the video it said that other countries obtained this technology via tech transfer between nations while they had young engineers produce it themselves.
Uhh, this stuff has been around since the 70s
You're a little late to the party Iran :v:
This seems like something that should of already been invented.
Just read the post above mine....Oh!

Seems to me that while Iran wants to portray that, I think everyone else is laughing and saying "haha look at that, fuck off Iran"
An Israeli newspaper reporting the deadly weapons that Iran has?
That almost reminds me of the time that there was a media flurry about the surface to air missiles platforms Iran were getting (they didn't) which led to the Israeli government purchasing a few F-35s

That is it. You have just explained everything.
What Iran is doing makes no sense politically or strategically unless you assume that the US is paying them to make other countries scared.
This is the armaments industry bailout. Making Iran scary enough that other countries buy weapons from us.
(Yes, I am kidding. :P)
I actually found the concept really cool, lets the grunts get more accurate fire without having to always call in air support and try to communicate with a pilot.
When i read the title i pictured shells from super Mario bros.
[editline]31st January 2012[/editline]
Does anyone else find it funny that this
out same day as us's self guided bullets?
More Dick waving?

If I had neighbours like Iran and the way America was a dick towards them in the past, I would really want some sort of deterrent.
But I bet the Iranians just point a laser pointer wherever the shell looks like it's going to hit, then claim it's laser guided. :v:

They have footage of the guidance system accuracy in the OP. You can see a floating fox that gets destroyed spot on which is near impossible with unguided artillery.

I think the media has a tendency to oscillate between
"Haha, those goat herders are full of shit!"
and
"THEY'RE GOING TO KILL US ALL!"
PGMs is one thing, and it's reasonable for Iran to be able to develop them.
But this raised my eyebrows

Interesting observation. Generally laser guided munitions are not equipped to self target.
Well done.
Now catch up with the [I]past thirty years of military development.[/I]

It's not unheard of, but us Westerners only got that kind of stuff in the last decade.

Yea, you isolated country alienated by the rest of the world with no superpowers to trade tech with!
Catch up already!
Iran tries.
Why everyone immediately assumes that no-one but western first world countries are the only ones capable of developing military tech?
This type of shell isn't as uncommon as Iran claims it to be.
My actual respect for tinkering and inventing that stuff themselves instead of just buying blueprints from other nations. Iran has alot of young and clever minds I just wish their government wasn't on such a confrontational course.
These didn't exist already?
I must really suck at World of Tanks then
I love how everyone's like, 'lol iran military xD', in reality, any country with 3 fucking trillion dollars military budget (USA) is going to have a much superior military, Iran even more so, since it has some of the most brilliant minds on the planet, but the government squanders their chances.
