People in United States of Ameristan re over-diagnose and over-treated for depressions
Americans are over-diagnosed and over-treated for depression, according to a new study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The study examines adults with clinician-identified depression and individuals who experienced major depressive episodes within a 12-month period. It found that when assessed for major depressive episodes using a structured interview, only 38.4 percent of adults with clinician-identified depression met the 12-month criteria for depression, despite the majority of participants being prescribed and using psychiatric medications. The results are featured in the April 2013 issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.
the title of this thread is incredibly confusing

Seriously. I can't.. just what the fuck?
This thread title is making me feel depressed.
Keyboard was glitched
fixing it
I can't even tell what this is about. The snip from the article doesn't tell me much.
Of course it's common. Shit I could have told you that, I don't need a study to prove something that's completely obvious and right in front of my face everywhere I go. In other news, grass is fucking green and water is wet. Prescription drugs are the scourge of our society. There's a pharmacy on every corner and there's a doctor willing to prescribe you literally whatever you want at any time, all you have to do is ask, and hell you don't even need to ask most of the time they'll just recommend it because I'm sure they get paid to do so. Our pharmacies even call you to remind you that you have prescriptions that you can get filled if you want.
Does anyone out there really think that many people need fucking xanax? I know so many fucking Xombies that I can't even talk about this subject without getting literally sick to my stomach. It's fucking disgusting. And it's not just the depression thing, we diagnose and subscribe a pill for literally any possible excuse we can make, especially behavioral patterns, and especially in children. It's absolutely sickening. It's for this reason that I'm actually glad my parents were poor and never had insurance or otherwise I'd have been on ADHD meds and all the other shit that everyone else at my school was on all my life and I'd have unquestionably progressed to other stuff by this point. I never thought I'd be thankful for being broke my whole life, but this whole prescription drug thing has absolutely changed my opinion on it.
The worst part about it is they even target people who aren't interested in and have never been into getting fucked up, they just get injured and through no fault of their own they're prescribed something that eventually they become addicted to, they just can't stop taking it, and it destroys their lives. The only comparable problem I can see in the adults around me is the rampant alcoholism that I also see everywhere that seems to be totally accepted by society. We talk ill of drinking and driving so much but it's obvious that we don't really care because there are bars, with parking lots, everywhere.
Title should read: Americans are over diagnosed and over treated for depression.
All of the kids in the fourth grade class my mom teaches are on some kind of anti-stress or antidepressant meds. According to her like three of them actually need them, and the meds turn the rest into nuts for most of the day. I'm glad she refused to put me on meds.

Got a problem? There's a pill for that. Side effects may include dry mouth, itching and redness (Doesn't say where), diarrhea, fever, vomiting, stomach pain, erectile disorder, bleeding (Just a bloody nose, honest), painful urination (Seen The Green Mile?), heart attack, stroke and seizure (All at once), alzheimers, dementia, irritability (Well at this point who wouldn't be?), fear (Side effect of the side effects making you feel like you're dying really). Stop taking Happypillysta if you experience the following side effects: death (You really were dying after all).
Gotta hate corporate America.
This magically pill with fix all your problems. You can get your own pill bottle for the low price of $40 dollars out of pocket.

That's probably one of the worst analogies one could ever come up with.
That's probably one of the worst analogies one could ever come up with.
It's not an analogy, I'm not relating one concept to another, in the context of that particluar sentence I'm directly speaking on one subject, and the subject is drinking and driving. My argument is that there are bars, places where adults are encouraged to come and drink, and they have parking lots full of cars that will, in very many cases, eventually be driven home by the people who were drinking. Sure there are responsible folks out there who will do the right thing and designate a driver or call a cab or whatever, and I'm not saying bars should be banned or that we should try to restrict this kind of activity, I'm just saying it's obviously complete bullshit when we say we care about drinking and driving because there's a place you can drive to and drink and then drive home from on almost every street in commercial areas. Not only that, these places are basically the main place to meet and socialize and have fun with other adults and it's entirely socially acceptable for everyone there to be at least a little intoxicated, the drinking is definitely encouraged, yet there's a parking lot outside.
Now I will use it as an analogy to relate it to the subject of this thread: It's similar to how we have a war on drugs that costs us billions of dollars yet there's a pharmacy on every corner that sells highly concentrated synthetic versions of the hardest drugs known to man and all you need is a note to get them. We act like we care and the political rhetoric says that we're doing something about it but it's complete bullshit.

But... Alcohol tastes good.
But... Alcohol tastes good.
Don't get me wrong bro I love it too and that's what bothers me most about it is that my dad's side of the family has a history of alcoholism and it's hard as fuck to convince someone who's been drinking literally all their life to consider that it might even be a slight problem, probably due to how socially acceptable it is (pills are getting to be the same way, to relate it to this thread). Like some people get physically mad at you for even insinuating that it might be a negative thing that should be approached with moderation. It's fucking ridiculous. So it's going to take a lot of self-control and personal responsibility on my part to avoid going down that path as well.
This is why I bring up the whole thing about how we socially pretend to care about these issues when in reality that's all bullshit because it's a personal responsibility problem that's just not being addressed.
