A man lay dead in his car on a busy Auckland road for five days before a resident raised the alarm with police.
http://www.smh.com.au/world/man-lay-dead-in-car-on-busy-road-for-five-days-20130306-2fk8y.html
Oh jeez, thats horrible!
Bystander effect in action it seems. It's a car left on the road for five days. Nobody is taking any action because of the following two possibilities: 1. Somebody else has already noticed, and will take care of it. 2. Nobody else is doing anything, so why should you? If nobody is doing anything, then it doesn't seem like an emergency does it?
Just proves that most people aren't aware of shit/don't give a shit about other people besides them selves. I mean really, five days??
It said he had his seat leaned back and he had rolled over. So if you're driving by, you aren't going to see anyone in it. So I don't think it's really that odd that it got pasted up.
You're forgetting this is on a busy road. No one is going to stop and check. They just assume its an empty car waiting for a tow. You wouldn't stop on a highway for one vehicle.
Bystander effect in action it seems.
I dont think you know what the Bystander Effect is.
However, he said it would not have been easy to spot the man's body as he was lying down. well people probably just saw a car and thought nothing of it. Perhaps they thought the guy was sleeping.
And facepunch goes to new lengths to be pessimistic about the human race
And facepunch goes to new lengths to be pessimistic about the human race
No, just Sobotnik and Sarge.
In a realistic situation, you're on a busy highway and you need to focus your attention on driving. You might notice the car on the side of the road for a split second IF you're in the outer lane, and you won't be able to see anyone or anything in it. Entirely understandable.
I dont think you know what the Bystander Effect is.
The car has been sitting on the side for ages, and the reasoning behind that effect is that people think somebody else has already taken action.

If a regular commuter passed the car they would get suspicious of its presence, as well as the stench situated around it.
No, just Sobotnik and Sarge.
Not pessimistic, just that people genuinely would have probably thought that somebody else would have already taken care of it, or noticed by then. [editline]6th March 2013[/editline]
Please read my post.
I did, what is your argument that people won't do anything because a: somebody else would have taken action or b: nobody else was doing anything, so you shouldn't either.
Not pessimistic, just that people genuinely would have probably thought that somebody else would have already taken care of it, or noticed by then. [editline]6th March 2013[/editline] I did, what is your argument that people won't do anything because a: somebody else would have taken action or b: nobody else was doing anything, so you shouldn't either.
Literally every day I go on a busy road, there is at least one car stopped on the side of the road, and it's probably the same for a lot people. They're aren't going to memorize each car they see on the side of the road.
i probably wouldnt notice it either tbh
You probably would have smelt something, as a car is essentially an oven if there is even slight sunlight. If a regular commuter passed the car they would get suspicious of its presence, as well as the stench situated around it.
Unless the windows were open you would never smell anything. If I see a car on the side of the road I just think that the person just abandoned it like every other car I see on the side of the road.
or, you know, they didnt realize anything was wrong to begin with
This is almost literally the bystander effect. Either that, or they don't know what to do if there is a problem.

And it can be there for a million and one reasons other than there's a body in it.
Literally every day I go on a busy road, there is at least one car stopped on the side of the road, and it's probably the same for a lot people. They're aren't going to memorize each car they see on the side of the road.
True. When you see a car stopped on the road, you don't think there is a problem. Given that many other people would pass it and see nobody paying any attention to the car for days, they will think to themselves "no problem" and go on as usual.
Sobotnik is acting like he has never seen a car on the side of the road before. In case you don't know cars being left on the side of the road is very common.
3. There's a car. On the side of the road. Where cars go to be parked. And it can be there for a million and one reasons other than there's a body in it.
So if it was parked for five days on a busy road, how come nobody noticed it sooner?
It said he had his seat leaned back and he had rolled over. So if you're driving by, you aren't going to see anyone in it. So I don't think it's really that odd that it got pasted up.
But shouldn't it be a dead giveaway that something's up if the car's been in the same exact spot for 2+ days?
Sobotnik is acting like he has never seen a car on the side of the road before. In case you don't know cars being left on the side of the road is very common.
In what appears to be a: Area where people are not only driving by, but also possibly walking by as well? For 5 days?
This is almost literally the bystander effect. Either that, or they don't know what to do if there is a problem.
They DIDNT KNOW there was a problem. Ive seen dozens of cars stopped by the side of a highway before, ive payed no mind to them.
This is almost literally the bystander effect. Either that, or they don't know what to do if there is a problem.
I thought the bystander effect only applied when the bystanders were mentally aware that there was a thing that could be a problem. If there was a bomb in a suitcase in a locker somewhere that exploded and destroyed a building, could it be said that nobody got rid of the bomb because of the bystander effect, despite the fact that nobody knew there was a bomb in the first place?
The car has been sitting on the side for ages, and the reasoning behind that effect is that people think somebody else has already taken action.
So we should walk up to every car we see on the side of the highway and peer in? C'mon
But shouldn't it be a dead giveaway that something's up if the car's been in the same exact spot for 2+ days?
I see cars parked in the same exact spot for like a week and never really pay any notice to it. Edit: A lot of people like to park in the same spot as well.
