John Lewis (D-Ga.) on Friday announced he’s backing Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-Minn.) bid to be the next Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman. Lewis touted Ellison as a powerful organizer with a deep background in protecting civil rights and the best candidate for the job of rebuilding a fractured Democratic Party. “Keith's long history as an organizer who can energize the grassroots makes him the best choice to lead our party during this critical time,” Lewis said in a statement. Not a huge surprise - he's a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus that Ellison leads with Grijalva. With the number of endorsements Ellison's getting, I'm hoping it's in the bag for him. He'd be a great first step towards ousting the excessively neoliberal elements of the Democratic party and refocusing it on progressive policy issues.
Finally some good news.
He also sent letters to DNC members pushing for Keith. This is a pretty big win.

I feel like the DNC is worried that Ellison is a risk because he'll somehow offend "moderates" because he's a Muslim who has a few soundbites that are easily manipulated, but I think they're overestimating how much people care about that kind of shit. People just want genuine politicians, and Ellison is one of those - whitewashed squeaky-clean politicians with deep roots into the "old party" aren't a "safe bet" anymore, after this last election. Ellison's a great new face and I really hope he gets DNC chair.
Meanwhile Pelosi seems to think the reason why the Democrats lost was because they weren't corrupt enough.
