Shocking News: Destiny will still have paid expansions alongside microtransactions
Destiny's microtransactions and paid expansions are both selling well, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said on an earnings call today, November 3. As such, Destiny players can expect to see more of both in the future. Not one or the other, but both--and at the same time, Hirshberg explained.

"I think they're already co-existing," Hirshberg said in response to an analyst's question. "We had a full year of expansions to the game that have been very well received and sold quite well. More recently, you've seen us introduce smaller, in-game purchases that allow people to customize their experience and express themselves; those have been very well received and have sold well also. I think we've already shown that DLC and microtransactions can co-exist and that our community is hungry for more great content."
Never played destiny; how expansive are these expansions? When Yuri's Revenge came out for Red Alert 2, it was basically another game and totally worth it. Are the destiny expansions worth it at all?

The first two DLCs (each worth $20) definitely weren't worth the asking price.
Was actually thinking of buying a console to play it before it came out but I'm pretty glad I didn't.
Better than microtransactions being the DLC I guess.

Except considering how the base game played, these microtransations are basically just Bungie's solution to the "economy". Oh did I say economy? Sorry I bought into their buzzword term that is actually "gameplay". Oh wait, no, the right term I'm looking for is "horribly repetitive grind". Third time's the charm, sorry. Now that they're adding them you could safely bet money that they're going to make the grind even worse than before. "You can just pay a little money to skip the grind if you want, but you don't have to do it!"
Shouldn't buy the expansions anyway because when they release Taken King 2 or whatever it is, it's a better buy not only in price but will also include some exclusive content that you won't get for being an early adopter. But all that is hardly going to add anything of massive substance that they clearly can just patch, so whatever.
The Taken King is a fantastic expansion that is well worth the price IMO, as long as they continue making expansions of that quality I am fine with shelling out the money.
The microtransactions are literally only to buy fake dance moves that have 0 effect on gameplay.

would help if you knew what you were talking about before you posted
all you can buy are emotes

Are you kidding me? The grind in Destiny is an issue, that is true, but there is no way to bypass it with microtransactions. You can't buy materials, experience, gear, or anything along those lines. You can buy dances, and for a special Halloween event, you could buy cosmetic masks that you could get from playing the game normally. Please know what you are saying before you make such an outrageous claim.

I can't really speak much because i've only recently gotten into Destiny but the Taken King content at least was basically another entire half of the game that was added and a much better story to boot, definitely worth it if you can get it at a decent price. House of Wolves and the Dark Below were basically just short story-based campaigns, good in their own right but get them bundled if you can rather than buying them individually. And the grind doesn't really take affect until endgame and if you're like me, who just enjoys playing the game rather than going for something specific to get your light level as high as possible, it's very enjoyable and doesn't feel hugely grindy. I mean shit it took me a week and a half of off and on playing to get to 40 and i'm at light level 259 right now.
In all my time playing games Destiny is the only one I genuinely regret buying. I bought it when it came out cause my mate kept going on about it. Played for a few days and lost interest.
I didn't really get it, it seemed every mission was the same; blast your way through a load of aliens, Ghost has to connect to something for 5 minutes. Oh no more aliens appear, defend ghost for 5 minutes, reach the end boss or whatever, just stand there shooting it for 15 minutes straight.
That was a year ago, I still want my 50 quid back
I'm glad I dumped this game early and got as much money as I could back

I got an exotic just by playing the halloween event. Not a single dime spent since the expansions. Plus you can earn the silver as well to buy the emotes. Not to mention that silver is only used for the emotes. The rare weapons, armor, and banners you have to earn by playing the darn game.
This is old news, they made this announcement like a month ago when they announced the micro transactions. It'll be yearly paid expansions rather than 3 or so a year, with a slow trickle of free content all year long.

Tbh the base game was like that but Taken King is light years better.
Well, they do give you one free consumable to bring a character up to a high enough level to skip the base campaign now. :v:
Destiny is a garbage, unfixable game because it lazily focuses on a meta game and asserts that its core mechanics aren't good enough. Abstractions, such as resource collection of multiple types, are layered over each other to create artificial depth. Gear also becomes a resource (and consumes resources to upgrade) by creating a library of objects with minor differences. This is completely at odds with the core game mechanics because it creates a disconnect between the game that is being played out and the systems that govern stats. Compare the weapons and player character from multiplayer Halo 1 to 3. Each player starts identically and the game space is layed out in order to leverage the mechanics and player skill. You can form an understanding of the game system through a few sessions without the need to do anything other than play. Vehicles, powerups, and weapons all exist inside each space and allow emergent complexities to arise based on how the players utilize the space. Each game element is designed to create strong interplay with the rest.
On the flip side, Destiny presents you with hidden variables on hidden variables that are only exposed through the meta game that is the menu. This creates a game space that can't be relied on. A given character's deadliness can only be understood by peeling back the details of the various gear they are using. How is this unreliable? It comes down to the principle of the form fitting the function. The visual design of a good game takes advantage of our ability to recognize patterns. Having a multitude of similar looking and acting things that accomplish the same goal, with minor tweaks of hidden variables, diminishes our ability to learn by doing and seeing and refocuses the role as a player as the optimizer. This kind of artificial depth is pedantic and actually is antagonistic to the goal the game is trying to reach: strong, varied game mechanics that allow for emergent play. This is the same flaw that so many MMO or RPG style games have. Non game designers call this "Item Creep".
Tbh it's embarrassing that a company that made something as enjoyable as Halo could completely miss everything that made those games good. And that's not to say that the devs themselves fucked up. I ultimately blame the industry for destroying the role of the game designer.

I've seen so many lists of how many design flaws there are in Destiny, started playing recently myself because it came for free with my PS4 and I found myself being able to make my own list from the second I started playing the intro mission.
As someone who loved Halo from CE to Reach, I'm surprised how Bungie could have fucked up this bad. What happened? Activision? Did 343 Industries take all the original designers?
this honestly doesn't really surprise me that much.
it's literally only optional dance moves that don't affect the game at all. if you want to focus all your cash on the expansions, then you're free to do so without any hassle.

Dude, what is up with you? Every time I see you post lately you're blindly bashing something
For one, I wouldn't say TTK is grindy at all, but besides that, the microtransactions are things that have nothing to do with the gameplay. Currently the microtransactions are purchasable emotes. Do you even know what you're talking about

Everyone bashing Destiny over this clearly doesn't even play it or else they'd know that lol..

Draugur you make yourself look so retarded lately I gave you a star for effort
