Think tank polls support for issues among millionaires and the public, find millionaires shockingly
On May 22, The Campaign for America's Future gave a conference on The New Populist Majority. The keynote speaker was Elizabeth Warren. The conference confronted the meme that the US is a "center-right" country.
Most interesting to me was the fact that they obtained poll results from "the 1%." Typically, "upper income" in polling is considered "over $250K/yr" or even "over $150K/yr." Such people are rich compared to most, but they do not have enough money to buy elections with their spare change.
The poll results for this comparison came from the Russell Sage Foundation. "Elites" are defined as at or near "the 1%" in wealth with an average income of $1M/yr or more. The perspectives of this group are compared to responses from other polls such as Pew and Gallup.
The 1% largely want the status quo to stay as it is, who'd have thought?

Not all of these are bad mind.
I can't see any problems to be had from trade relations with China.
Oh man, who would have ever known?
And another study says that the wishes of the majority of the 1% are granted by the government 98% of the time.
Fun.
None of this is surprising in the slightest. What would be more interesting is seeing who's more in favour of spending for military/space/science.

Yeah this poll is bollocks. And why should any of this be surprising? If you make over 250k a year you're probably a business owner, and trade with china benefits you the most as well as shipping jobs oversees.

that is the only one that doesn't seem too bad
There's no link to the actual poll. It literally means nothing without verifying the methodology.
Rich people are greedy and don't give a shit about anyone else. Color me surprised.

Here is the actual report, which is linked to on the site for the conference, which is linked to in the source.

Looks like the information is gathered from other polls, but the report links to all of the sources.
Millionaires are out of touch with the reality that most people face, colour me shocked.

I think the issue is that there is strong hints in China that a major bubble is on its way to bursting there. I wouldn't want the economy to suffer as a consequence if it does explode pretty badly. The carnage in the west back in 2007 was bad enough.
Millionaires are out of touch with the reality that most people face, colour me shocked.
i think people are far too kind when they say simply "they're out touch" IMO, its not that they're out of touch, at least not only, but they also just don't give a shit.
[sp]inb4 "you're generalizing", no i'm not referring to EVERY millionaire obviously[/sp]

"Trade relations with China" doesn't mean importing exotic tea from them; it means shipping all of our manufacturing jobs over there so that multinational corporations can pay workers there a fraction of what they would have to pay American workers and funnel even more money up towards the top.
Well duh, poor want laws passed that benefit themselves, and the rich don't want any of that.
There's no link to the actual poll. It literally means nothing without verifying the methodology.
literally the last person who should be questioning the validity of polls
The sample size of all the 1% data is a problematically low 83 people. 1% of the US population is about 3,180,000 people which would put this data's margin of error at about 10%
Edit: The sample was also drawn only from Chicago
And the public polls they're comparing the 1% data to are a few years old
Breaking news: people want laws that benefit them. Rich people want to ship jobs overseas for half the pay and poor people want social security benefits to give them money.
I feel like the image of the upper million and billionaires will change over time as I see more and more theyre following the idea that your money and businesses should be beneficial for people. We're getting more Branson's, Musk's, Gates, Brin's etc. People who want to do at least some good with their money. More people signing the giving pledge. These people are also a good chunk of the super wealthy. I think we'll find that more and more people will do good with their money.
But in the end we'll always have the investment bankers and oil tycoons that shit on the image of everyone that makes over 250k.

Except doing this has resulted in China going from being an impoverished third world country into becoming an industrial superpower.
And now ironically because China has risen so rapidly and wages there have risen and workers are starting to complain they are now starting to outsource work to places like Mexico, Vietnam, and half of Sub-Saharan Africa.

...with a pollution problem so bad it poses an existential threat to the human race and an incredible amount of income disparity. Call me old fashioned but I think the American rich should prioritize supporting American industry over Chinese industry.

Unless they actually want to use that money to improve the situation in China I tend to agree.

Philantropic actions attract a lot of attention, partially because it is rare. While there are many charitable billionaires, Forbes lists 1600 individuals with net worth of at least $1 Billion. So I don't see philanthropy a major trend among the wealthy.

Yeah, if rich people cared about helping the poor they wouldn't be so damn rich. A few million here and there out of multi-billion dollar fortunes is pocket change. Nobody needs a billion dollars. Nobody needs four mansions instead of three. Nobody needs two garages full of italian cars instead of one. It's crazy that our society tells people that it's ok for someone to just keep a billion dollars to themselves when other people can't afford drinking water and shoes. It's not even like they're letting it accumulate so they can give it all away when they die; that never happens either.

Do I have a right to tell you how you should spend your money?

You do realize most, if not all billionaires are so because they own companies worth a billion dollars? Just because you're a billionaire doesn't mean you have a billion dollars of spending money. You get that from over bloated salaries and wages. A billionaire could in theory (and sometimes in practice) live modestly with a low wage and a small house while still being a billionaire because they own Apple or something. I'm willing to bet the only peopen that DO have a literal billion dollars are criminals and war lords. Real billionaires don't have a billion dollars.
Do I have a right to tell you how you should spend your money?
It is possible to morally evaluate choices of other people even when they are completely legal.
Though I could imagine having a billion dollar wealth does grant you a lot of financial privilege.

yet the chinese are realizing this and introducing widespread ecological reforms in response to this
social unrest has also rapidly risen partly because of that, and if the party wants to stay in power they will have to address the peoples demand for equality, ecology, etc
Call me old fashioned but I think the American rich should prioritize supporting American industry over Chinese industry.
I think people should prioritize the world as a whole instead of their own country. Now that China has industrialized, we should focus on getting up Sub-Saharan Africa to that level.
