The iftar dinner occurs at sunset at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islam lunar calendar and a time of prayer, reflection and fasting. White House officials reportedly spend months planning the event, which has been held every year under the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations, but 2017 took a different path. The White House issued a statement on late Saturday evening. "Muslims in the United States joined those around the world during the holy month of Ramadan to focus on acts of faith and charity," the statement read. "Now, as they commemorate Eid with family and friends, they carry on the tradition of helping neighbours and breaking bread with people from all walks of life. "During this holiday, we are reminded of the importance of mercy, compassion, and goodwill. With Muslims around the world, the United States renews our commitment to honour these values. Eid Mubarak."
Not a surprise from the man who thinks the Muslim people are all terrorists.
The man who made a muslim ban ends a muslim tradition at the White House. Is anyone actually surprised?
I was about to say that things like these really go to show what kind of a president and a person he really is but then again, so do everything else he does.
Not surprising. It just makes political sense for him when his supporters are anti-muslim.
If it were over a different issue I could also see him being too busy shitting himself over everything else.
Holy moly, I didn't know that was a centuries old tradition. Aren't those the great American times Trump is trying to make America again?

"Dinner will be on the table precisely at sun-set – " the invitation read. "The favour of an answer is asked." John Quincy Adams noted in his diaries that the dinner was served late in the evening as it was "in the midst of Ramadan".
i'm inclined to believe its a typo and they meant to say "decades old tradition" but we have been having them since the 1800s on and off again so it is technically a 200 year old tradition
The man who made a muslim ban ends a muslim tradition at the White House. Is anyone actually surprised?
Didn't Obama do the same ban lol
Didn't Obama do the same ban lol
No he didn't. He laid the framework for a visa check for similar countries. What he did is no where near what Trump did. You should be careful where you get your news from.
How many traditions has he broken now? Hopefully the next president revives them.
How many traditions has he broken now? Hopefully the next president revives them.
Well you have to go back 20 years to find a president with lower first term approval ratings than him so I guess being liked is a tradition he broke :v:
Is anyone really shocked? This guy respects no one
Yeah its the conservative media's method of attacking liberals. "Obama did thing too, so your hypocrites for attacking Trump for it" while also peddling "Everything Obama did is anti-american." By doing this, they can avoid admitting Obama did anything they like and still attack the democrats.
It's amazing that Obama isn't even president anymore and they're still blaming him for things going on now
I don't mean to be offensive if I seem that way but you don't see saudis/arabs sitting down to eat a yorkshire pudding sunday dinner or a meatloaf dinner. They have no respect for us and are all laughing at the Western nations for how we are handling things. I see no reason for this pointless tradition and personally, if I were in office I would end that too. Focus on important things, fasting is not a tradition leave that out of politics shall we. I just can't wait until we no longer need all that arab oil and can hold sauds and more responsible for all their horrific human rights violations and state-sponsored terrorism. Sick of it. This is probably the one thing I agree with Trump on out of all his other decisions.

Islam isn't just Saudi Arabia...In fact, the Saudi Royal Family are probably the least "Muslim" people to even exist on the fucking planet. Also, why the fuck is celebrating this related to Arab Oil? A few million Muslims live in the US. Sorta of a nice thing to show "Oh hey, we aren't going to leave you guys out" By your logic, that means Christmas, Thanksgiving should be booted out of the White House. Since thats "Not focusing on more important things..."

This is a celebratory event to mark the end of an extended period of fasting and prayer. A sunday roast is just a thing we have on a sunday for reasons nobody really cares about any more. One has some significant cultural and religious ties, the other is just a fuckin meal you could eat any day of the week really.

Plenty of other countries do just fine on showing multiculturalism without a special fast to appease a certain group. I was using them as an example but pretty much all muslims are laughing at us, with the exception of those who don't demonize us and think Sharia Law or Jihad's are a good thing. I don't see no need to have a tradition like this in a Western Nation, like I said more important things to focus on. To be honest if they hand out christmas gifts around a tree and drink eggnog then yes it should be kicked out but they don't do they. An iftar dinner which occurs at sunset at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, that's a whole different ball game.
It's amazing that Obama isn't even president anymore and they're still blaming him for things going on now
They live in a dual reality where they simultaneously have complete control of the government and are fighting an uphill struggle against the liberals.

In fact, almost every fucking major religion in the fucking world is Non-Western. Christianity wasn't, Judaism wasn't, pretty much the only religions in the World that were "Western". Was the Greek Pantheon, the Roman Pantheon, the European Pagan Religions, and the Nordic Religions. And those are extinct... (not counting the new pagan religions...) It's one day. One, fucking, day. And how slow shit happens in fucking D.C., thats like a millisecond. So quit your Islamophobia Bullshit...

There are Muslims who think jihad is a bad thing? Have I Misunderstood islam and jihad?
It's amazing that Obama isn't even president anymore and they're still blaming him for things going on now
Not really. Everything Trump does is really, really hard to defend even for conservatives. However, they got eight years of experience complaining about Obama, and doing that is easy with how hated he is amongst the readership. They're not trying to convince any democrat that Obama was 'as bad' or anything, they're reminding conservatives how 'awful' Obama was and how he totally overshadows Trump.
Please tell me how exactly, what I said, which was Islamophobic. I think you missed the point completely there
I think the obvious way that you view Muslims as some 'other' thing, like it's a religion that doesn't belong in Western countries, is pretty damn islamaphobic. Islam is not just a religion for Saudi Arabia, it's the second largest religion in the world. There are millions of Muslims in the US, so why shouldn't the white house join in celebration with this dinner? Maybe stop arguing that 'the Muslims are laughing at us!' if you don't want to look severely insecure and islamaphobic.

Everyone's laughing at us. We've elected a complete dumbass for President. Secondly, read up on the concept of jihad. It isn't "hehe suicuide bomber mentality", it's a notion that's prevalent within each and every Muslim and differs by each person. Also, iftar is not a fast. It's a dinner that concludes the day. They can't even be bothered to give a dinner for those who have fasted throughout Ramadan. Yet, the White House can pull out a big event for Christmas? Give me a break.
I don't see how not participating in a religious event for a religion you don't believe in is an insult. I wouldn't expect a non-Christian president to attend all the Christian holiday stuff.
