• Cool old and not so old server/computer stuff stuff my father-in-law has. Suggestions?

Howdy. My father-in-law has an old office on his property FULL of all kinds of old, and not-so-old computer stuff. I'm posting here for two reasons; maybe someone here will get some joy at looking at cool older hardware, and maybe someone has a suggestion on whether any of this stuff is sell-able, and where/how I should try and do so. Maybe none of this stuff is that special, and I am cool with that, I mean most of it is less than 20 years old. Anyway here some shots of said dusty old computer stuff; Some assorted 256, and 128 mb ram sticks Multiple older network cards Assorted server Hardware Firebox X Wathcdog firewall and cysco ASA security adapter I'm guessing where the main hard drives are stored Qsnap Appliance server 4500 Assorted mouses, cables, powerchords, hard drives, cat5 lengths pci cables, fans, adapters etc. APC UPS's It's safe to say there's a lot of stuff here, I know some of it may be totally crap, but I want to know if I should try and sell/recycle this stuff, or what?
Pretty much any desktop will out perform it, there is no "bonus" that server HW gets aside from QA and ECC that makes it that much better.
Actually that server keyboard/screen mechanism is pretty expensive. Might be worth looking up some used prices.
Actually that server keyboard/screen mechanism is pretty expensive. Might be worth looking up some used prices.
KVM's are worth it to sell but aside from that iLo/Drac/IMPI/vPro kill it
Sorry bout the broken links. Fixed. [editline]30th March 2014[/editline] Well just found out there are peeps that are actually selling that Cisco ASA 5505 for 300 ish. Good to know haha. thanks for the input so far guys.
that microsoft mouse is still the best mouse ive had
So is he giving you all of that? If so keep it and be the cool kid. I myself am going to be recieving my fathers 8 processor 32Gb 20 Terabyte home server in a year, am still waiting eagerly to get it.

You're better off selling them all
that microsoft mouse is still the best mouse ive had
Dude tell me about it. I have like3 or 4 of them all still working after many drops from my recliner on to the concrete floor haha [editline]31st March 2014[/editline]
You're better off selling them all
I think that is the route I will take. I will probably do them on ebay unless someone here wants something.(pm me if so) I also need to get a picture of what I am assuming is some sort of patch buss for cat 5. So many ports on that thing.
eh watchgaurd is okay, but wow you haven't moved to SA?
Excuse my ignorance but I don't even know what SA is or why I should have moved there. The stock firmware is beyond useless.
As far as the PF sense install goes I just looked it up; seemed pretty complex for me, so probably will sell it instead to someone who knows what they are doing. I will be plugging this in the afternoon to see how much of this powers up still. Fingers crossed...

I'm probably gonna sell all the Hard Drives in lots, as well as the cables. Most of the server stuff is still being used with the exception of the ancient hot-swap looking Harddrive rack. Also apparently the Qsnap is still selling on ebay :} http://www.ebay.com/itm/Snap-Appliance-Server-4500-Pentium-4-3GHZ-5GB-RAM-4-X-400GB-/251334543610?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item3a84b4c8fa
Oh god all of that Rambus memory. It's completely useless unless you have a bunch of old and rare Socket 423 Pentium 4 rigs, or even more rare Pentium 3 server boards. You likely won't get much for it because of the extreme few things that actually support it. This is a Ultra 320 SCSI RAID controller, not a network card: [t]http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx31/andypopz/Networkcard_zps29f19969.jpg[/t] It requires a PCI-X (not PCIe) slot, which mostly only older servers have. It was probably part of that huge drive cage server in the rack at one point, or a backup for it. You can chain up to 15 SCSI devices of varying capacity or capability on it. It looks like it supports both 68 and 50 pin SCSI devices, and 80 pin with a backplane or adapter. This is a SoftModem, it's worthless. You can literally get these things a dime a dozen. [t]http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx31/andypopz/networkcard_zpsde941b18.jpg[/t] Depending on if these SCSI drives are good or not, you could make a decent profit off of them: [t]http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx31/andypopz/HDDs_zps1286c025.jpg[/t] Many companies scour the internet to find older drives like these to keep their antiquated SCSI RAID arrays going for one reason or another. I'd LLF these drives, test them and sell them at market price (probably $20-50 per drive, sometimes more.) You could use them yourself, they're built like tanks. You just have to understand they're loud, power hungry and produce a lot of heat.
Market price for SCSI drives varies heavily based on capacity, rpm, presence of drive caddies, and pin style. Things smaller than 80pin drives though aren't going to be worth much because their sizes will be quite limited from what I've seen. If you sell those things for $20 or more, don't expect them to sell quickly.

I will check them tonight, last night I figured out how to hook up the Drive Cage Server and it booted. Windows Server 2003 lol :/ I will boot it up again tonight and check the BIOS to see how many of these drives post, and I will probably sell them in a lot, and that RAMBUS Ram in it's own lot. Fortunately I have been seeing the CISCO ASA 5505 I have, Firebox X1000 and A few others things actually being bought on ebay. All those cables will probably be sold in a massive lot, along with those thermaltake fans and old freaking optical drives... I may keep 2 of those fans. hahah. Also the Qsnap server booted... Linux server. Most of the SCSI drives are like 32G or 78G. Lots of Seagate Cheetahs,Intel Ultrastars, and Maxtors. I may never get rid of some of it, so anything that just won't sell will be recycled. [editline]2nd April 2014[/editline] UPDATE: You where right on the money Gig. Pentium 4 Socket for the server drive cage lol.
Thanks for the info Gig. I will check them tonight, last night I figured out how to hook up the Drive Cage Server and it booted. Windows Server 2003 lol :/
That's probably the last Windows OS that thing will run and still be useful. Socket 423 P4s were so awful that it wasn't until they reached 1.7 GHz that they were barely able to outperform a 1.4 GHz Pentium 3 they were designed to replace. I have a dual socket PIII-S 1.4 GHz server that can nip at the heels of a P4 3.0 GHz in HT mode. If you continue to use it, I'd recommend installing a Linux distro on it for sake of security.
I will boot it up again tonight and check the BIOS to see how many of these drives post, and I will probably sell them in a lot, and that RAMBUS Ram in it's own lot.
I'd keep some Rambus around if you keep that server just in case some goes bad. I saw you had some CRIMMs too (Rambus continuity modules). They don't actually have any memory on them, they're just there to provide bus continuity when all memory slots in a system aren't populated. I'd have to get six of the exact same drive since it's a RAID5.
Op located near north Florida? I may be interested in some of that stuff but it would probably cost more to ship it than its worth. I can't help but notice you not listing the rack, any reason?

I should have looked at the brand name I think it's HCL but it's a beast, so I will probably list it for local pick-up only, I don't know how I would ship something this big; it's got four giant out-take fans, and Cage doors. I may take a pic tonight since I'll be taking "Money" shots of all of this stuff this evening. Some of the rack mount stuff wont be as expensive to ship as you think; The Qsnap is probably the heaviest thing aside from the UPS's- those probably will be picked up, it takes 2 people to move one "safely". Also if you're interested let me know what specifically. This stuff is actually selling pretty well. Just got 195.00 for that Cisco ASA. Only cost 5 bucks to ship it haha, it is sorta small though lol.
Are those hotswap drive bays sata? 7th pic down I could be interested in the firebox and maybe the WD black HDD if the price is right The majority of those optical drives, cables, ram, and SCSI drives are trash to most people, but you never know what people will buy these days.

He can sell them on ebay all he wants but he'll be outclassed by anyone else who can ship it with a warranty.

Previous posts would have revealed that they are almost all 32 and 78G.
How many WMO's are there in the assorted mice, i can see at least 3 in the picture? Depending on which versions they are they could be worth selling on ebay.
Excuse my ignorance but I don't even know what SA is or why I should have moved there. The stock firmware is beyond useless.
SomethingAwful.... Thought you'd be there by now
what
When cosmic duck took mod of the forums and such I thought most went to the IT forum on SA.
Will you sell the hard drive hotswap cages from the one server in pic 7 down? I'd be interested in them for one of my rigs if they are sata
[t]http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx31/andypopz/Hddmachine_zpsd368973f.jpg[/t]

Will you sell the hard drive hotswap cages from the one server in pic 7 down?
They're obviously SCSI, and you can't remove the drive cage and backplane from a 4U server and expect it to fit in a desktop case lol.
Who said it was going in a desktop case? I have three 4U rackmount servers and I've seen similar cages sold that were sata so it very well could be. I'm pretty sure they are not built into the case but rather two 3 x 5.25 cages Here is one I just found listed online as being sata, I'd say they look nearly identical wouldn't you? [t]http://i.imgur.com/fj9JW9i.jpg[/t]
Who said it was going in a desktop case? And 2-3 years before SATA devices became widely available. That and the huge piles of SCSI drives around the server, from deductive reasoning can be concluded those are SCSI drive cages.
