McCarthyism Reborn: Newt Gingrich calls for a House Committee on Un-American Activities
36 replies, posted
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is calling for the creation of a new House Committee on Un-American Activities, invoking the infamous "Red Scare"-era congressional body as a blueprint for weeding out American ISIS adherents and sympathizers.
"We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis," he said during an appearance on "Fox and Friends" this week. "We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis. We're going to presently have to go take the similar steps here."
Gingrich, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, has been touted as a potential running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee.
His comments on Monday echoed Trump's, as the billionaire businessman suggested "Muslim communities" should be held to greater account for the actions of their neighbors.
Oh yes because that's not exploitable at all!
Here's my favorite take on Clarke's third maxim:
Any sufficiently advanced imbecility is indistinguishable from satire.
Christ, I hope this this belief isn't shared by many others.
Time to bring back up those internment camps.

Hopefully that sort of solution isn't final.
Hopefully that sort of solution isn't final.
Hopefully it won't happen to begin with.

Yeah man. In this age of mass surveillance by the government that breaches so many of our supposedly-guaranteed civil rights, unprecedented political polarization both in Congress and amongst the American people, the subversion of our democratic political system in favor of one that revolves entirely around money and campaign contributions (an oligarchy, to quote Jimmy Carter), there's no way it will be exploited to fuck us over worse than we already are.
Everything's going to turn out just fine...:downs:

fair enough, but his rather large voter base still is worrying
Wonder why people still fear of a possible Trump presidency when Clinton is rising in national polls and has the backup of the establishment.

It says a lot about the American people for even a sizable minority to support his extreme beliefs and policies.
Even if he loses, it's sad to know that 40%~ of my countrymen support insane ideas like this one.

and the communists, and the trade unions, and the jews, and the gays and the liberals, and the pacifists, and the dissenting military brass...
it was not only an instrument of extortion, blackmail, and political destruction, but it also was one man's attempt to cleanse the country of what he saw as un-american elements.
well if they go ahead with it, i hope it nukes the republican party for a generation like McCarthy did
Trump reminds me of McCarthy, considering both parties dread him.

Eisenhower, a Republican, won in 1952...
[editline]15th June 2016[/editline]
I mean, he was sort of a fake Republican in that the Democrats wanted him on their ticket originally as well. But it was still a Republican victory.

It certainly helped Kennedy, also Eisenhower was probably the most electable person after fdr and washington
We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis.
Oh, so because it was the Nazis that made it automatically okay? I guess putting a strap-on Lady Justice and making her rape Lady Liberty in a back alley's okay as long as it's for a good cause! She's blind anyway, it's not like it counts right?
What a stupid fucking suggestion.
Creating a House of Un-American Activities is an Un-American activity
Creating a House of Un-American Activities is an Un-American activity
We should do it, then convict him, then get rid of it.

, the problem was McCarthy took that power and corrupted it. There were actual Soviet plots to infiltrate companies, research facilities, and government agencies and that threat did exist, they like Russia does today, were funding fringe parties like the Communist party usa and it's members were recruited for espionage purposes
I don't really see ISIS sympathisers infiltrating the US government in the same way though

Have you been reading the forums?
Why can't newt crawl back into whatever slimy pit he crawled out of?
I thought we were done with his particular brand of bullshit.

We were until he backed the horse that surprisingly won the primaries.
