Need help in Gimp - How to make an image transparent?

I take an image, then go into a new file. I then use the magic wand to click around it, click delete, copy the image, and it's not transparent. Help with this? :saddowns:

No problem man :D

Alternatively, after you select the background you can just add alpha channel (right click on a layer>add alpha channel) if the image doesn't have it yet and press delete to delete the selection. No need to create a new file. Save it as a .png if you want to keep the transparency.
Oh and the magic wand doesn't always work well, it's not magic at all. All it does is select the area which has similar color to the point where you clicked, you can also set the threshold of how big color differences it will tolerate. Basically it works well when the background is monotonous and has good contrast with the foreground.
