Damn this is cool, pretty unreliable though right now.

Sometimes reading the article is a good idea.
Pretty awesome, especially if it's able to be done from 10 km away. You could cover massive areas with one camera.
I wonder how they encode the data, 1km = 1,000m = 1,000,000mm, that's a lot of possible values for each point...
On second thought, if it doesn't encode colour, just distance, then that's less possible values then colours...
Cool, I hope they can use this to make a camera which records video with z-depth.

This is like a wiremod ranger-based camera in GMod :v:
Isn't this what that Lytro camera does?

And fog effects!
And volumetric light ray effects!

As far as I understand the Lytro just takes a bunch of images of different focus at once and sort of mashes them together.

that camera is a 4d lightfield camera. which has a lends over each camera pixel and then transforms the data using such algorithms as a Fourier splice transformation into spliced 2d images.
It has potential for representing the data in 3D, I would like it in a point could, but it's closed source.
In no way does it use lasers.
I'm getting tired of this ~~~3D~~ fad... last year it was all about ~~~~3D TELEVISION~~~ and look where that went.

Yeah they're very popular.

This really isn't even close to the same thing though. There are already cameras which can take photos that give an illusion of depth when viewed in a certain way. This is a camera which can detect depth and threedimensional surfaces. Huge difference
The 3D TV "fad" is actually a good thing because it means almost all TVs are produced with 120Hz (or whatever it is) displays.
