The U.S. military said Saturday it's detected what's being described as a failed missile launch by North Korea.
The launch occurred near the northwestern city of Kusong and the missile is presumed to be a Musadan intermediate-range ballistic missile, according to a Defense Department statement.
The military says the launch was attempted at 11:33 p.m. EDT Friday (12:03 p.m. Saturday local time) and that the missile didn't pose a threat to North America.
North Korea has claimed technical breakthroughs in its goal of developing a long-range nuclear missile capable of reaching the continental United States. South Korean defense officials have said the North doesn't yet have such a weapon.
This would have been just another test, right? They're about to have the hammer dropped on them if the thing was carrying an actual warhead.
Title had me startled that the Norks launched a missile with a warhead
I wonder what would happen once North Korea does enough tests to create and stockpile capable ballistic missile systems
Thats a misleading title
Damn, this DPRK stuff is starting to go beyond a joke.
they'll be less than a joke if they try anything

It's never been a joke; idiots on the internet are just now realizing they're serious and they will eventually pull it off.

My best friend's former USN intelligence. He honestly just assumed NK to be joking madmen until he was stationed in that area on multiple carriers and learned real hard real fast that NK is not just joking madmen, but freakin' insane workaholics hell bent on making their nukes work so the rest of the world can fear them.

I would assume the only reason several SM-6s didn't cluster-fuck the successful orbital launch was because of the strength of intel saying that this was not a nuclear strike. I know this isn't the movies, but there must be some chance that they switch their 'satellite' for a reentry vehicle on their second orbital 'test'.

We've been predicting this would happen. October 10th is their national day so we suspected them might test a nuke or something

I could watch a person who's never played a videogame before make a serious attempt at beating Dark Souls, but them being serious and able to eventually pull it off won't keep me from laughing at them along the journey.

This isn't a video game that has life threatening reprocussions though.

NK just wants to be recognized
they're legit fucking crazy

The only thing though, is being crazy doesn't mean they wouldn't use weapons if they got them. And by them using them if they got them, doesn't mean they'd be completely inept and just bomb some ocean some where. There does exist the legitimate threat of them being nutters enough to actually drop them on their neighbors down south or to the east and dragging us in the muck, is the down side.
Why else do you think the USN has 12 carriers total with Carrier Group 5 permanently forward deployed in the region multiple months out of the year?
meanwhile china insists that our missile shield is totally unnecessary
"Hey bro, you don't need that gun, I'm friendly, and so is my best bud nork."
Something like that.

From the NK perspective there is a war they can only lose looming over them and whatever deters that war (ICBMs, nukes etc.) needs to be pursued to keep them alive. Anyone who thinks they have a chance of taking the South and having any lengthy occupation let alone not being curb-stomped is fearmongering or has an ulterior motive.
It's all about balance, NK needs to show enough strength that nobody thinks about invading but they won't attack anyone because that is game over for them, on the ROK/US side they need to deter any thought of NK aggression whilst not putting the North into a position where they must lash out.
North Korea might be kooky and built on shaky ground but they wont throw everything away needlessly to have, at best, a 2 week occupation of northern Seoul.
Like, the whole thing becomes less scary and more understandable once you grow up from thinking they are completely bonkers.

This is my understanding of the deal, they arent dumb, they just need to huff and puff just enough that they wont get "liberated", but not enough to be a big enough threat to be "pacified"
once they get nukes they can do what they want internally, and the warmongering on their side of the fence will die down as they will feel safe.

Yeah, that's true, but you gotta think what are we gonna do about it? Yes, it has life threatening repercussions, but there's not a lot for the standard person to do except point and laugh at their failure until it does get completed. It also may help in keeping morale higher than it could be.

I may not have worded it correctly, but yes. I agree. Basically, it's an extension of the cold war, with multiple different points to it. But the biggest fear is the achievement of being technologically able to attack and a warmongering private sector that falsely thinks it can achieve union with its south (the bonkers part, not the general public or all of the ruling members; most of them realize that that's not a good idea, but all it takes is one bad leader with a bad decision to do damage - mostly to themselves).
