The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge are some of the most powerful devices you could buy right now. But our regular readers and forum dwellers would know that Samsung devices aren’t the supreme best when it comes to development
...
This was no ordinary write failure. A secure check failure, in simple terms, indicates a locked down bootloader. As far as my personal knowledge and understanding goes, this prevents any operations from executing unless the signature of the file matches with the OEM’s public key stored on the boot partition of the device. This essentially restricts all activities to those that come directly from the OEM, Samsung in this case. You can’t flash anything, not even repacked stock images with no other modifications
...
This has certainly been a disappointing turn of events. What was to be AOSP’s best hope in the dark world of TouchWiz has been left crippled behind the likes of even Exynos. While the possibility of root, custom kernels, recoveries and ROM’s still exists for Samsung’s Snapdragon 820 devices, the likelihood of them attracting major development works remains slim after this devastating blow.
So basically the only way to root is if an exploit gets found. Unfortunately those get pwtched fast, and some carriers literally force updates without you being able to stop it
That's gonna be a dent in the sales. How to eradicate a community 101
Then don't support them with your pocket, it's been long known that Google and American Carriers want to lock their ecosystem as much as they can, my phone has superuser access easily accessible and supported by the manufacturer
What phone?
That's gonna be a dent in the sales. How to eradicate a community 101
Not really. I'd wager that about 99% of sales that Samsung makes of their phones aren't to people who care about this kind of stuff.
That's gonna be a dent in the sales. How to eradicate a community 101
Doubtful. Samsung doesn't target the rooting community anyways. They target the average consumer more.
I'd argue that people who root samsung devices do it more of curiosity rather than it being a make or break device feature for them.

I'm not sure if it's Google, this is part of the reason I like the Nexus devices.
It's controversial because of how much I tell people about it but it's the Nokia N9
It also runs Source SDK and everything made in every platform ever, Samsung copied the N9 heavily in the S7 and they should've copied what makes it great
Wait... N9 with Android?
No right?
It's controversial because of how much I tell people about it but it's the Nokia N9

I don't think Samsung copied a 5 year old phone as much as they simply took the good stuff about the s5, and the body of the s6 and gave it a yearly upgrade
I'm not sure if it's Google, this is part of the reason I like the Nexus devices.
Yeah,
If Google didnt want you.to unlock and root your phone they wouldn't have an option for it in the dev menu, they even honor the warranty for Nexus devices with unlocked bootloaders if they were purchased from the play store.
this prevents any operations from executing unless the signature of the file matches with the OEM’s public key stored on the boot partition of the device.
Do ROMs accept whitespace /garbage characters in the header of the file? If so, couldn't you bruteforce it until the keys match, like people do to fake other certs?
That's why I like Sony, they care about people who want to use custom firmwares.
That's why I like Sony, they care about people who want to use custom firmwares.
Unless it's a phone being sold through a US carrier, apparently.
:v:
Supposedly the T-Mobile Z3's bootloader was locked by Sony rather than at T-Mobile's request. It's...bizarre.
Nexus devices aren't even "stock" anymore, AOSP is dead in almost everything having components being deprecated for closed source Google Play Services, they are also doing everything they can to stop people from digging into their nexuses (Watermarking the boot screen, voiding warranties in select markets if you root, making userland su impossible, enforcing selinux [while still running Android services like zygote as root], losing features like Android Pay if you root, disabling OTAs)
[editline]14th March 2016[/editline]
Maybe this is acceptable for most enthusiasts but Google & Friends have stagnated the platform for a while and they do nothing to fix it, my old Nexus 5 feels less responsive than this phone for most tasks and softlocks in the gallery
Fine then I'll just install Meego on my N6
Not really. I'd wager that about 99% of sales that Samsung makes of their phones aren't to people who care about this kind of stuff.
yeah I have no idea what any of this "root" stuff means
yeah I have no idea what any of this "root" stuff means
It's like Administrator privileges for your phone.
Welp, there went any interest I had in the S7. I don't even care all that much about rooting it beyond perhaps installing a good ad blocker, but to lock it down like that? The principle of it all is enough to make me not buy.

that's kind of a dumb reason not to get the phone though
that's kind of a dumb reason not to get the phone though
Not supporting anti-customer bullshit is 'dumb'? Well, shit, I don't want to be smart then.
that's kind of a dumb reason not to get the phone though
Not really. Touchwiz is really bad and I think it's bad to say to companies that it's okay for them to lock down their stuff to 100% proprietary everything
Not really. Touchwiz is really bad and I think it's bad to say to companies that it's okay for them to lock down their stuff to 100% proprietary everything
if you used a Samsung device in the last year you'd know that touchwiz isn't bad anymore at all
if you used a Samsung device in the last year you'd know that touchwiz isn't bad anymore at all
You can pretty much disable it on newer phones anyways, stock Android layouts are still there
That's gonna be a dent in the sales. How to eradicate a community 101
I think the vast majority of android users don't care about rooting their phones. Also Korean Companies are impervious to good vs. bad sales

I did it to run away from TouchWiz.
if you used a Samsung device in the last year you'd know that touchwiz isn't bad anymore at all
It's still pretty bad compared to some other OEM skins (Sony and Motorola being the best in the market, IMO)
Remember the memory management fiasco on the S6 and S5?
I did it to run away from TouchWiz.
Since my At&T Galaxy S5 with version 5.1.1 can't be rooted I had to settle with Nova Launcher, which kicks Touchwiz to the curb.
Touchwiz is a mess. [airhorns]
Then don't support them with your pocket, it's been long known that Google and American Carriers want to lock their ecosystem as much as they can, my phone has superuser access easily accessible and supported by the manufacturer
Google? I don't think they mind unlocking the bootloader if there's an option in the settings for me to deactivate the lock on my Nexus 5X. It's generally manufacturers and carriers that want to lock everything down to prevent any kind of user tampering, which is bullshit because if you buy the device you should do with it as you please. This kind of thinking is what prevents me from purchasing phones from those kinds of companies.
It's going to be a shame if there will be no method to unlock the S7's bootloader. Touchwiz has had years to improve its interface and it's still an atrocious steaming pile of dog shit.
In addition to getting rid of touchwiz, it's just nice to get rid of the google/samsung bloat and add some additional features.
My friend bought one of these today hoping to root it, RIP for him. They'll probably find an exploit eventually. Can't expect there to be many roms available though.
I just like to root my devices to mess with the clockrate and increase my battery life
Then don't support them with your pocket, it's been long known that Google and American Carriers want to lock their ecosystem as much as they can, my phone has superuser access easily accessible and supported by the manufacturer
Uh how has google made their open platform more restrictive?
And its not even the manufacturers that want to "lock down the device". Its the carriers. Carriers do not want you rooting or gaining full access over the device. They prefer if they kept their middleware/CIQ nonsense installed on your phone.

LG's optimus isn't bad (G3, V10), or HTC's Sense. They've gotten better. Touchwiz remains to see any actual improvement in my opinion. It just seems to get fatter with more gimmick apps every time.
fuck I just bought an S7 today. What does this mean as far as customization options go? All I've really been interested in is changing outward cosmetics. Themes seem kind of restrictive.
