Hey guys, I think I've finally made the decision to quit the use of all illegal drugs. For me, this means no more weed, shrooms, and underage drinking.
I know you will all think I'm retarded, but I sort of had an epiphany today. My friend and flight instructor revealed to me today, that he tried to join the Airforce 2 years ago. He was in college, AFROTC, and a genius to boot. He had it all planned out. He was going to be a fighter pilot and serve his country. He loved aviation, his country, and the branch of the military known as the United States Air Force, that his Grandfather so proudly served in. This was his dream.
The day came when he sat in front of a final recruiter, with the final papers to turn in. IF he filled these out, he would be ready for the junior/senior summer bootcamp. Looking through the questionnaire, there was a simple question that asked something to the tune of: "Have you ever used federally scheduled/illegal/recreational drugs?"
My instructor, is an upstanding person. He would never tell a lie, even under these circumstances. He reported his usage of marijuana recreationally on that paper, even though he could easily have lied.
He was rejected by the Air Force, for this reason. He lost his dream. You will probably think he's stupid for this. I think he's the best role model I've ever had.
I'm sure none of us see something as benign as Cannabis, as a negative thing. We all know it shouldn't be illegal and such. And yet, his story really really affected me. This man, my friend, my instructor, ruined his life and dream, for the crimes of being honest, proud, and living under a government that won't accept someone who smoked weed in their backyard.
The Air Force is my dream too. I want to be the man in the F-35. I realize that when my time comes, I will have to lie, or tell the truth about my past drug history. I will lie, not because I'm more intelligent than my friend, but because I don't have even a fraction of the moral integrity he has.
His story has woken me up. There's too much in my future at stake, for me to destroy simply because I wanted to have fun and catch a buzz. I don't regret smoking weed. Many of you are probably familiar with my thread last month, discussing my brush with a career-ending drug test at a FAA medical examiners office. I dodged that and the consequences.
But I worry now, I'm almost 18. At 18, if I was to be caught anywhere with illegal drugs, my career and dream would be over, just like my friend. The FAA, the USAF, and and Airlines that might employ me, would never accept someone with any background with drugs. I feel like there's too much at stake, for me to go any farther with this.
I turn 18 in 4 months, before that time, I intend on completely and permanently abstaining from Marijuana. I wish it wasn't like this. I wish I lived under a government that didn't suppress and hurt users of something as positive as cannabis, but sadly I don't.
I'm sorry if a lot of this doesn't make sense, I've smoked the last of my weed today. I don't think I will be buying anymore.
I'm sorry if my choices or my instructor's choices, seem stupid to you. I feel like I'm doing the right thing. I will continue to hope for a future where Cannabis is accepted as readily as alcohol. Maybe then I will toke up once again
What about when it's legal?
[editline]12:31AM[/editline]
Also, no offense but you think that maybe he made that up to get you to stop?
Best of luck, man.
You've got to schedule the drugs around your life, not your life around the drugs. I'm glad you've found something you're passionate about, and that you're able to prioritize your goals.
That's good dude, I was to the point of completely stopping smoking, but then I didn't graduate fuckin high school, so now I'm working on my GED (slowly), and smoking again, before I go into the Marines, which already accepted me, but I just didn't graduate. Oh well! Best of luck to you. I can only hope that you support me on the battlefield one day.
Very smart and mature decision there. Most people will get to a point where they have to say no and stop, and focus on the more important things. It looks like you found that point nice and early on before it was too late.
Charlie Brooker was a passionate stoner and quit drugs because of his career and I think no less of him. He's an awesome individual and is definitely pro-choice when it comes to drugs.
Difficult decision to make but it's right to chase your career and not hedonism and I respect you deeply for it. Good man, hope it goes well.
Rated dumb, not because you're giving it up, but because you're proud of America and you want to join the army.
Get rich and fly your own jets without killing people. Then you can keep smoking.
Fuck the Government, man.
And yes, your friend made a stupid mistake by being honest to people who lie to him every day.
Hm, I slightly sympathise with the idea that wars are mostly immoral but just because you're a tank commander does not mean that you want to kill people.
Wehrmacht soldiers in World War II did not all hate Jews and mostly weren't Nazi's. They were drafted and thrown into the meat grinder. Your opinions are narrow and inconsiderate.

By joining the US army, which is voluntary, you're just helping to kill people for oil and drugs, in today's world at least. I have no respect for anyone who does that, let alone someone who gives up weed for that, sorry.
By joining the army, which is voluntary, even if you don't kill anyone you are still part of it. I have no respect for America now because they're just fighting over drugs and oil, and you're giving up weed to help them.
In fairness the Americans made a highly unpopular decision but nonetheless, a decision that has dismantled a lot of terrorist groups. I'm from England and think our decision to join the war was a bit less greedy as we're more of a peacekeeping force but ultimately the choice to go to war was probably a bad thing.
Joining the army does not mean you support your political ideology at all. Aaron wants to join the airforce because it's something he believes he's good at, he's trained hard at and wants to prove it to the world and himself. It's noble and historically members of the airforce are much more pacifistic than the army.
If you want to live in an ideological world you need to invent one because as long as Capitalism and a monetary society exists, there can never be peace.
I think we'll have to agree to disagree then because I think joining the army is supporting their political ideology.
Nice, good luck.
After your last thread, seems there's someone who's prodding the universe to give you chances.
Enjoy being a pilot.

If it becomes legal, yes maybe I will begin to smoke again. But I doubt the USAF will ever accept it in my lifetime.
Haha and no he didn't make it up. He always hinted around this story and he finally revealed it to me. I can't imagine a sadder and more depressed individual when he talks about losing his dream. He really wanted to follow his Grandfather's footsteps

That's very narrow-minded of you. Neither he nor I, would join the Air Force with the intent to kill others for a political ideology. Flying a fighter is a proud thing because you've proven you are the best of the best. And if it came to fighting for my nation, I wouldn't be doing it for politicians.
My friend did the right thing. He is very VERY proud and honorable. He wanted to serve his country and live up to his grandfather. He said that lying was no way to go about life. Having to lie to get there, would have taken away from anything he earned. There may be a future where he can attempt to join once again, and they won't turn him away just for having fun in his younger days.
the likelihood of anyone joining the air force and getting the opportunity to fly is slim to none. i have a friend who is in the air force academy, one of two in his state that were accepted in, and even his odds are low.

There's a simple way to get around this. Recruiters get quotas as to what they need to bring in on a monthly basis. You have to visit an officer recruiter(a good one) during a period of time that their pilot recruits are low. To improve your chances, you can go to officer school, join AFROTC, and also have a background in aviation. You also need at least 4 years of college.
Best of luck, man. Only about 4% of people in the Air Force actually fly, though. More likely than not, you'll be ground crew or logistics.
Anyways, the Chair Force has a lot of chill, cool people in it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it either way.
It's great that you can put your future above your recreational activities, I wish you luck.

I've always found fighter jets to be great target practice.
When you go through MEPS (The recruitment process in this big ass building), your going to be grilled with questions by an medical examiner.
Just keep your mouth shut, and carefully answer their questions.
I'd be in the Marines right now if I didn't spout my mouth off about my childhood asthma at MEPS. The Marines were my dream.
no weed? being a pilot sucks.
Goodluck with lying my friend, I am not sure if the Airforce does hair testing but if they do Marijuana can be traced back for 7 years. I know certain divisions of the military do a Spinal Tap which reveals every drug you have done in a lifetime. (psychedelics that is)
You can't detect LSD from a spinal tap, or any drug for that matter.

Jesus Christ, are there really people who still believe this myth?
No, LSD isn't stored in your spinal fluid.
No, Psilocybin isn't stored in your spinal fluid.
No, Mescaline isn't stored in your spinal fluid.
No, spinal taps cannot be used to determine past drug use.
By the way, the half-life of LSD is 5 hours, after which point it is completely undetectable in your system. The majority of the drug has been cleared from your system by the end of the trip.

Well I know for a fact Marijuana stays in your hair for up to 7 years, secondly I have heard stories about the spinal tap and was unsure if it was myth or fact. I guess I will have to read up on it. I do know that some drugs can be found in Spinal Fluid I just forget the key ones, and most drugs can be found in fat cells. I just asked a friend about the LSD part and he pretty much said everything you said.
For some reason everyone believes that spinal tap shit.

i know for fact u pulled those 7 years out of ur arse

Holy shit man, you need to stop fucking posting. Hair testing can detect drug use up to 3 months or so in the past, and that's the most accurate form of drug testing. It also happens to be the most expensive and time consuming. Hair testing is very, very uncommon.
Source: My mother works in the department of a hospital that does drug testing for companies. I am very, very familiar with professional grade drug tests.
They shave your head.
Well I know for a fact Marijuana stays in your hair for up to 7 years
I know for a fact that it doesn't.
most drugs can be found in fat cells.
The only drug that I know for sure is stored in fat cells is THC, and abstaining from smoking for 2-4 weeks will take care of that problem.

I have had a hair test administered on me at Lowes Corporate Offices and I hadn't smoked weed for a year up to that point and they discovered Marijuana in my hair. Explain to me how I failed if it stays for only 3 months? It took about a month for them to complete the test as well so I know all of the shit you are saying already.
