RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA—President Vladimir Putin of Russia called U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss a proposal by Obama for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in Ukraine, and the two leaders agreed that diplomats for both countries should meet soon to discuss it, the White House said.
In a statement from the White House, officials said the telephone call from the Russian president had followed a proposal presented by Secretary of State John Kerry to Sergei V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, during talks at the Hague this week.

Officials did not describe details about the proposal but said that Obama had told Putin during the call that the United States would like to see a diplomatic solution that involves Russia pulling back its troops from the Crimean Peninsula and not making any further steps to invade other parts of Ukraine.
The statement said that Obama, who was visiting Saudi Arabia on Friday, had “urged Russia to support this process and avoid further provocations, including the buildup of forces on its border with Ukraine.”
White House officials said Obama and Putin had agreed during the call that Kerry and Lavrov would meet soon “to discuss next steps.”
Officials did not say when that meeting might happen. Kerry has been in Europe with Obama during the past week and was in Riyadh on Friday with the president for a meeting with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
White House officials said Obama had taken the call from Putin at the Ritz Carlton hotel here in Riyadh on Friday evening after he finished a two-hour dinner with King Abdullah to discuss Iran, Syria and other security issues.
The president and Putin have been locked in a tense standoff since Russian forces rolled through Crimea this month and Russia annexed the region of Ukraine, a move that the United States and its allies refuse to recognize.
Over the past several days, Obama has urged European nations and other allies to consider broadening sanctions against Russia if Putin escalates the situation in Ukraine. Obama has also vowed to enhance, with other nations’ help, NATO’s protections of member countries along the border with Russia.

There's what they officially say, there's what we hope for, and there's the physical outcome. Pardon my narrowness, but I actually have no idea what to expect. Someone enlighten me?
I'll leave myself with no expectations really; IIRC doesn't Putin not really like dealing with Obama?

I'm not quite sure. I recall hearing Putin put in a few good words about Obama on record. However, having said that, despite my very fluent knowledge of spoken Russian, it is harder to read Putin than a damn poker all-star. This guy is ex-KGB, remember?
I also found this described with slightly more detail on BBC (a bit more recently I think). http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26795627

Also, it was on record :P

Sincere or not, any attempt at de escalating is a good thing at this point.
In other news: Putin gifts Obama a glass of vodka made from the potato he got from his last visit.
Bit fucking late ain't it.
I really hope it comes to a peaceful conclusion soon. Looks like there's hope here though

any time is better than never
I can see a resolution coming out of this, but not really one that would benefit Ukraine's situation with Crimea. Crimea is fucked if you ask me, but perhaps at least Ukraine will stop getting dicked around.
Bit fucking late ain't it.
Not for Putin. He got what he wanted, now's the perfect time to start de-escalating tensions (unless he plans to annex the rest of Ukraine which imo is unlikely).

The only "resolution" here is that Putin will act smug and flaunt his trophy which Crimea is as everyone silently agrees that they cannot do anything about it.
Seems reasonable. Putin got exactly what he wanted: He successfully reclaimed a large chunk of ex-soviet land. Now he's ready to return to business as usual.

'They', could do something about it. They just won't because it isn't worth the drama
It's like leaving the immature pest in your class alone when he's done something wrong just because it isn't worth the scuffle
kinda proves that Putin's invasion wasn't really all that planned then. he wouldn't be reaching out to Obama right now if this was a premeditated plan to systematically reclaim Ukrainian territory
[editline]29th March 2014[/editline]
I do think Ukraine should be involved here though, Kerry can represent their interests but at the end of the day he isn't from the country that's been invaded

It's never too late.

It would be nice if you could dismiss Russia as nothing more but an immature pest if it wasn't for them just grabbing and permanently conquering 27 thousand km worth of land and getting away with it.

More like because they have nukes and they're only slightly afraid to use them
More like because they have nukes and they're only slightly afraid to use them
Stop. Seriously. There is literally zero justification to believe Russia would resort to nuking anyone who attempted to stop them from taking Crimea. They didn't join the "New START" program for giggles.
does Putin get his political advice from a Civ 5 AI?

That was a joke, loosen up a bit.
But yeah, the New START program is a load of bollocks

How is "Russia isn't afraid to use a nuke on someone" a joke? Especially when it's brought up literally every thread about Russia and Crimea/Ukraine? Sounds more like you are just trying to backpedal.
And how is the New START program a load of bollocks?

Yeah, and I didn't bring it up in any of the threads, even though I post in most of them, I don't see your point
And how is the New START program a load of bollocks?
Nuclear weapons are a good thing. There wasn't a single war between countries with nuclear weapons. We almost have world peace thanks to nukes. Giving up nukes is even dumber than giving up nuclear power plants

places like North Korea exist because of nuclear-standoffs, and the U.N.'s ability to actually govern human rights violations and war-crimes is restricted to only countries that don't have nuclear weapons and ones that the guys with nukes aren't supporting...
places like North Korea exist because of nuclear-standoffs,
North Korea has existed for decades without nuclear weapons
and the U.N.'s ability to actually govern human rights violations and war-crimes is restricted to only countries that don't have nuclear weapons and ones that the guys with nukes aren't supporting...
Nuclear weapons have done more for peace than the UN, that's ironic, isn't it? They've prevented war crimes and human rights violations by preventing war
That was a joke, loosen up a bit.

the jokes on you i was only pretending to be retarded
Nuclear weapons have done more for peace than the UN, that's ironic, isn't it? They've prevented war crimes and human rights violations by preventing war
Too bad we can't just let only the UN have nukes, and require a 100% vote by the UNSC to use them (with the exception that they intend to use it on a UNSC nation, in which case that nation is forced to abstain). Then we get to keep our absolute trump card, but never have to worry about blowing up half the world because 2 countries had a disagreement. But it'll never happen, we're all waaay too stubborn and untrusting, and we'd probably keep a few thousand in secret anyway.
Plus, conspiracy theorists would go absolutely bonkers if they were to happen :v:
[editline]30th March 2014[/editline]
And actually I might too, we're too greedy and stubborn to let poor people have healthcare, so giving up our strongest weapons ever for the greater good would look really suspicious...
Was hoping for another one of these images.
