The image prompted more than 100,000 likes and people worldwide shared their own photos of under-sized sandwiches. Subway Australia said references to Footlongs were not intended to guarantee its length. "Looking at the photo doing the rounds showing a slightly undersized sub, this bread clearly is not baked to our standards,'' it said. "With regards to the size of the bread and calling it a Footlong, 'Subway Footlong' is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway Restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length." The Subway Australia Facebook page was bombarded with complaints and predictions the "lame response" was likely to prompt a backlash. These included a call for a class action and the suggestion it was the worst spin heard in some time. Subway said a commercial promoting a Footlong as a foot long was produced in the United States. "The US is not governed by the measurement legislation as we are in Australia."

SOURCE: http://www.smh.com.au/national/subway-caught-short-on-footlong-20130120-2d1bh.html

2.48 centimeters short? stop the presses
Subway sandwiches are actually measured in centimeters here, so if they made them shorter, that would be pretty awkward.
'Subway Footlong' is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway Restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length
Oh they can just fuck right off. A 6" sub, as it is referred to on their menu, is a "footlong" cut in half. If the footlong isn't 12" then the 6" is also the wrong size and that means false advertising.
Subway sandwiches are actually measured in centimeters here, so if they made them shorter, that would be pretty awkward.
Eh? We have the six inch and footlongs.
I work at Subway, and this is one of the stupider things people have done. It's a piece of bread, it's soft. Just the way it is wrapped can affect its length. All the bread pieces are manufactured exactly the same from the same factory. Edit:
The Subway Australia Facebook page was bombarded with complaints and predictions the "lame response" was likely to prompt a backlash. Who cares?
It must be REALLY serious, they used the SI system of measurement too!
UGHHH! No wonder people lose weight eating subway. THEY'RE STARVING TO DEATH.
'Subway Footlong' is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway Restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length."
If it's not intended to be a measurement of length then why call it a footlong?
If you care so much maybe you shouldn't eat at Subway.
For every 11 sandwiches you buy, you're losing 1. If you eat subway quite a lot I can see this being a bit discontenting.
Actually , what's really funny is that people have decided to create an imaginary problem when there are actual things to be mad about. Last month we reduced the amount of meat on the Cold Cut Combo by 10%.
Because bread perfectly bakes into exact 12" subs right? This whole thing is pretty stupid.
Because bread perfectly bakes into exact 12" subs right? This whole thing is pretty stupid.
Exactly. If the mass of the bread is the same who cares. If we stretched it thin enough it could be 20 feet long.
fucking despicable cheap fUCKS!!
I love how a sarcastic facebook post erupted in idiots actually getting mad about this and wanting class action lawsuits.
i usually wouldn't get mad about this but subway constantly puts a giant campaign over the fact that their subs are a Footlong. aka 12 inches. to the point where it's fucking annoying. they even show 1 ft. in their commercials so it's technically false advertising. anything to get them to shut up about their subs being a footlong with that stupid ass song the better i feel.

I dunno go look at a pack of buns) every time If Subway is constantly advertising their footlong is a foot long and you're not getting a foot long footlong then you have every right to complain IMO, as much as it is a silly thing to be mad about.
For every 11 sandwiches you buy, you're losing 1. If you eat subway quite a lot I can see this being a bit discontenting.
That's implying that each and every one of your sandwiches is exactly one inch less than a foot.
I thought that this was gonna be about someone finding a foot in a literal subway or something
How the fuck do we know the foot size of the person who took the picture?
yeah and my dick is nine inches what, it's not supposed to be a measurement
Who the hell measures food? Why in God's name does someone pull out a measuring tape to measure a bread roll? Just eat it you fecking eejit!
yeah and my dick is nine inches what, it's not supposed to be a measurement
If its called a FOOTLONG then it should be a FOOTLONG
If its called a FOOTLONG then it should be a FOOTLONG
...I agree. Did you even read my post?
The bread looks pretty squashed to be honest
I work at Subway. There's a lot of things that can go wrong in baking bread, especially if it's not an experienced worker making it. But over all, I blame the corporation. About six months ago, they changed their bread dough. Before that, when we take the bread out of the fridge in the morning (in the shape of a dough stick about an inch thick) it's roughly 9-10 inches long and we have to stretch it to fit the pan to bake. No problem, right? Well with this new bread, Subway swore that we won't have to stretch the dough, "it'll stretch itself!!" They grinded it into every franchise, "DO NOT STRETCH" signs came with EVERY fricken box of bread and now it's a minor violation to stretch the bread when baking (seriously). But when I opened the store, I noticed immediately that it didn't always 'stretch itself' as sworn to do, but I can't go and stretch it just to get in trouble. This stuff blows. And now I'm off to go open my Subway in an hour :v: [editline]21st January 2013[/editline]
The bread looks pretty squashed to be honest
We wrap it tight so the meat doesn't fall out during carrying. It's the price paid to keep your sub together. [editline]21st January 2013[/editline]
Because bread perfectly bakes into exact 12" subs right? This whole thing is pretty stupid.
It actually does if the worker is experienced enough. The bread pans are only twelve inches wide. All that's needed is to make the dough reach end to end and it'll be a footlong every damn time.
Fuck that I'll keep buying Subway just because they are tasty and delicious and mouth watering and all round awesome sandwiches.
Who the hell measures food? Why in God's name does someone pull out a measuring tape to measure a bread roll? Just eat it you fecking eejit!
You don't need a tapemeasure actually. Helpful hint in measuring your sub: The deli paper that your sub is made on is exactly a foot long, so if your sub is smaller than that, something is up.
