Twenty-seven hurt in crash that left busy highway closed through the late afternoon. By Dan Stamm and Karen Araiza | Friday, Feb 14, 2014 | Updated 10:59 PM EST
A massive pileup, estimated to involve as many as 100 vehicles, caused a traffic nightmare along the icy Pennsylvania Turnpike just hours after a speed restriction was lifted Friday morning and that nightmare lasted until the road was reopened just before the afternoon rush. “My heart was just like…oh my God. There’s no words to express it," said Maria Schoeler who was stuck directly behind a multi-vehicle wreck. "It’s pretty crazy. It’s something you don’t expect with this many vehicles. It’s pretty treacherous."
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/breaking/Pa-Turnpike-Crash-245517981.html I'm ready for this snow to get fucked.
Don't feather the gas too hard and keep the brakes soft and you'll stop yourself from spinning around into your death.
The first accident happened around 8:25 a.m., leaving five tractor-trailers and 10 cars tossed up in a mangled mess about a mile from the Bensalem interchange on the eastbound side of the toll road. A series of crashes occurred right after that and within minutes, wrecked vehicles stretched five miles back. The scene overhead looked like something out of a disaster movie. SkyForce10 photojournalist Jeremy Haas was the first to see the scene from that vantage point. "It looked like multiple cars couldn't stop," said Haas.
looks like someone didn't know this simple technique to not crashing and really fucked everyones day up. at least that's what it looks like.
Jesus christ. No fatalities I hope. :C I would hate to be anyone there.
Im in PA, we got an ASS load of snow. Like jesus christ.
Some things never change. PA drivers in a nutshell: [t]http://www.vgcats.com/comics/images/031131.jpg[/t] This does suck, I hope no-one got severely injured.
I know they're not used to driving in those conditions but seriously its common sense, give more distance and be smooth on the gas, clutch and brakes. Slamming the brakes means losing control, your precious ABS won't save you in the snow and ice.
Im in PA, we got an ASS load of snow. Like jesus christ.
There's an eight foot bank in my driveway that I came home to today. Where it hasn't been plowed it's all 3-4 feet.
only a few weeks till march, and spring.
Living in PA, I can confirm this.

People were informed that it was safe to go normal speed. These people know how to drive in shitty weather because they've been just fine for the past month doing it. When everyone was erroneously given the all-clear they didn't realize that it wasn't, causing this to happen. And no asshole on the turnpike is gonna go 15 mph when everyone else is going the speed limit. [editline]15th February 2014[/editline]
Some things never change. They like to use no turn signals and pull way out to the left when they need to turn right.
Jesus Christ. I know it hit hard over here in NJ what with having over a foot of snow to shovel (arms are still sore...), but damn. Although apparently my sister already heard about this, so how'd I miss it?
I don't understand, I'm sure PA gets a shitload of snow every winter. Why can't they drive in it?
I don't understand, I'm sure PA gets a shitload of snow every winter. Why can't they drive in it?
They can usually drive perfectly fine when the bureaucracy doesn't fuck up and tell people that the highways are safe to go speed limit. Something like this has never happened; we've had worse snows with less troubles. The only difference here is that the men and women upstairs made a mistake.
Can confirm PA people don't know how to drive in snow
From what I heard, it's pretty clear now. Source: what I heard on radio while travelling into Philly on Northeast Extension

Never again will I New Jersey.
Almost ever County in PA is out of salt for the roads. The roads are terrible because of it.
Surprised to see so many people from PA on facepunch. I can also say that under most circumstances, people here are good at driving in the snow. It's something they teach you how to do in driver's education classes, I learned how to do it while I learned how to drive. I live pretty close to there, apparently the roads were salted very poorly. We got a lot of ice in addition to around 2 feet of snow in the area, and I was told that the roads had about a half inch of ice on them at the time (which is damn near impossible to drive on unless you're really expecting it).
I miss PA, I wanna go back. :(
PA lifetime resident here to refute this baseless generalization
PA resident here, philly drivers are the worst drivers in the world.
PA resident here, philly drivers are the worst drivers in the world.
I can vouch for this, as I lived in the Philly area (and traveled throughout PA) for nearly a decade. Lotsa bad drivers down there, maybe they just spilled over from NJ.

Fuck the fucking fucks who didn't do their jobs.
You guys think PA and New Jersey drivers suck? Try driving in Japan, shit is fucking treacherous. Allentown can get pretty bad tho' especially inner city and everyone who likes to double park.

Most people think their 4 wheel drive SUVs and trucks will magically give them super grip powers and speed and tailgate in the ice and snow anyway. Never seen a tailgating epidemic as bad as Pennsylvania...
You guys think PA and New Jersey drivers suck? Try driving in Japan, shit is fucking treacherous. Allentown can get pretty bad tho' especially inner city and everyone who likes to double park.
I visited Japan once before, and while I can commiserate on the quality of drivers with you, I can personally assure you that 4 out of 5 people who drive in India don't deserve no goddamn licence, much less the permission to buy a vehicle. The people on bikes are the worst, always trying to zip into every available space, such as the ones between two cars, and don't ask about no pedestrians. You put your life on the line negotiating our roads on foot during rush hour.

All of our cars have AWD, since my dads a doctor and he might need to get to the hospital for emergencies. And also, I don't know what you guys are talking about, its about a 50/50 split between good drivers and bad drivers around here. NJ is the worst by far. It's usually the high school girls who can't pay attention worth shit and occasionally the guys who go "lol speed limits" into a fucking tree. For 2 years I drove everyday into the city to go to school, the closer you get to the city the worse the drivers get. Merion, in my experience, is the worst in the Philly area.
I've lived in Philly my whole life and I still see way worse in NJ.
PA lifetime resident here to refute this baseless generalization
Same, here to refute your refutation. Ever try driving around Pittsburgh with a flake on the ground? People go crazy.
