I remember when I was younger my dad getting calls from these charities for donations, where he would promptly ask: "Okay, how much do you actually give to the group of people you are helping?" They would reply with (insert pitiful amount here), he would laugh and hang up.

I don't understand why people run away from cameras and except people not to get suspicious

I'm not proud that I don't donate often however just remember that you are entrusting someone else with your money, they could just be holding a bucket of cash and saying it will be for X charity but later on you follow them home and find them just walk back to their homes and dump the collected cash on their dining table and laugh. For that reason I find myself often questioning charities until I feel I can trust them, even if it's something like buying muffins/doughnuts and they are going to donate the proceeds to charity, I will be sure to question them.

...and this is why I refuse to donate to charities. If I want to help a given cause I will donate [I]directly[/I] to that cause, not to a third party 'charity' that spends more of the donation on 'administrative costs' than they do the cause. Not to mention the bad PR they'd generate.

Remember a few months ago when I said donating to most of these charities was a crock of shit and you should cut out the middle man when you want to donate where ever possible? This is why, and CNN just ran a story of a fuck ton of charities that pay out very little, and in some cases none at all, to those who needed the money. One Diabetes charity earned $14 Mil, and paid only $10,000 to people with diabetes When you see the CEO and Presidents and Vice Presidents of a charity all making over $1,000,000 a year, you don't donate to it.

Why does America have no fucking justice when it comes to dealing with people getting rich through bullshit illegitimate means? It seems really easy for a con artist to get away with whatever they want as long as they get enough money doing it.
