what the hell are you talking about? Community feedback is great, the only time it could possibly be harmful is if the developers are spineless idiots and cave into every demand that people make to them, as long as they only choose to listen to constructive and helpful feedback, it's fine
What do they think it's better to not listen to anyone like EA?
There's so much shit I'm not even sure where to start.
yes heheh.. trust EA you can trust all publishers
And people do tend to have a habit of thinking what they think is right, and those who disagree are wrong. In my case it’s actually true
If that's the case, he's a fuckin' liar.
Every day I find it harder and harder to believe that I once liked RPS
now now, most articles on rps can be agreeable.
At least the article's title doesn't use the word 'wot'
Man I remember when RPS used to make good articles, even funny ones. It's entered the abyss of bad writing it's so shit.
now now, most articles on rps can be agreeable.
Everything John Walker writes is utter trash.
At least the article's title doesn't use the word 'wot'
why does this bother people
can we blacklist certain authors from being posted by the bot
Believe it or not, there's a shitton of truth in this article. EverQuest Next is doing this, and oh my god are all the fan suggestions terrible. Every other post regarding the game on places like their official forum and the game's subreddit is literally asking for the reintroduction of the holy trinity, shittier but un-stylized graphics, and pretty much every feature from World of Warcraft and the original EverQuest. The developers are making polls regarding the game's features, and the answers of them are super easy to pre-determine and asking them is just really putting power into the hands of people who have no idea what the game is gonna be about. People just go for what is "the coolest" and the "most hardcore" option without question, and the suggestion parts of forums are full of absolutely pointless and impossible features, or shit that's in every other MMO and that the had specifically stated that they will be avoiding with every fiber of their being.
This article is right to a point, but the author needs to understand COMMUNITY FEEDBACK =/= COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
This is true in a case where a batshit retarded developer does whatever the community tells it to, but it makes the mistake of assuming all "community development" projects end up like that. Done correctly, a project like this will always be far superior to a closed project for multiple reasons. Showing things off in early development and allowing feedback to be received makes it drastically easier to make a change the developers hadn't thought of or misjudged, or scrap one that is getting massive flak. The developer should have absolute artistic control, which is why they should never put out "what should add next" polls, or any polls in general. Instead, the best way to go about it is to ask open ended questions that allow developers to see suggestions en masse, some of them good, some bad, but nevertheless suggestions in numbers they would never have been able to brainstorm alone. They can pick ones they like, or use them with their own ideas to create a superior product. In the end, it's no so much community development as much as it is community inspiration. The developer can only brainstorm so much, and by showing features early, they have a nigh infinite source of artistic inspiration to fuel their own style and big picture. That said, I despise this article and its writer deeply for being so short sighted.
Find the website for your favorite video game Now find the Community or Forums or Message Boards page Then, if applicable, click the Ideas and Suggestions section Finally, read each thread on the first page Now you will understand what Walker is getting at. [editline]23rd January 2014[/editline] Though I'll admit he is being a bit too hardnosed about allowing absolutely no community input. It really just comes down to ignoring the stupid shit and polishing the rare (very rare) diamond in the rough.
It just makes the point that Open Development can just as well end up making your game worse, as opposed to improving it. Dealing with player feedback is a skill on its own that developers have to master. In the end the designer is the one responsible for what is added to the game. For example, take Garry. I think he's great at filtering player feedback. GMod (at its core) never got bogged down with unnecessary community requested features, even though the community involvement is such a huge part of the game. [editline]23rd January 2014[/editline] To throw in my personal thoughts: I think the current trend of open development is just fine. Most developers handle it well. For designers there is no such thing as too much feedback.
Has anybody considered that this might be satire (albeit somewhat poorly executed and kind of ambiguous)?
Developers! Stop listening! And damned well stop asking! I have no idea what started this colossal crisis of confidence amongst the development world, but good gracious, could everyone get a hold of themselves? You’re the CREATORS, so get on with CREATING. Have some bloody convictions! You want to make a great game, so go ahead and make it, and stop thinking you have to pander to loud-mouths back-seat-developing your game for you. LISTEN ONLY TO ME. Gosh, games are going to be so much better now everyone’s agreed to all this.

Has anybody considered that this might be satire (albeit somewhat poorly executed and kind of ambiguous)?
It's RPS. Contradictions are bound to happen and this kind of thinking is expected.
