CVS Caremark pharmacies will phase out tobacco in U.S. retail stores by Oct. 1, officials announced Wednesday, saying that selling cigarettes side-by-side with medicine undermines the mission of promoting good health. The chain will lose about $2 billion in revenues annually from sales of tobacco in its 7,600 stores, but CVS Pharmacy president Helena Foulkes said it just makes sense for a firm now positioning itself as a health care company. “It was very important to us that, as we’re working with doctors and hospital systems and health plans, that they see us as an extension of their services,” Foulkes said. “It’s virtually impossible to be in the tobacco business when you want to be a health care partner to the health care system.” President Barack Obama immediately praised CVS. "As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today's decision will help advance my Administration's efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs - ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come," he said in a statement.
http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/so-long-cigs-cvs-pulls-tobacco-products-its-stores-n22156 A bold move.

alright douche, i just woke up so give me a break its like 9 am (User was banned for this post ("flaming/shitposting" - dai))
Could've.. y'know.. put those $2 billion into a better solution, like handing out free nicotine gum for an ad campaign to help stop smokers.
They do that and they lose the money into the gum, plus they lose the money on tobacco sales.
Good
CVS what's wrong why aren't you acting like normal companies that couldn't give two shits about the something like this Even realizing that if they'd like to be more health centered they shouldn't be associated with the legal cancer has been around for so long? am I fucking dreaming when I read that they are losing that much profit but still going through with the decision? No-one got fired, and they actually decided on something that makes actual sense? Jesus It's a shitty situation that I'm even surprised by this
It's not because they are good people, it's because they are hoping that by doing this, Health Care providers will send them more business in the Pharmaceutical department.
Ah; good point. Can't do something like this without stockholders expecting something

I could swear Rite Aid already did this and is selling smokes again. I could be wrong though. Doesn't matter because you can buy 2 packs Marlboro's at 7-11 and you get $1.75 off.
Ugh now I need to go to a random shady gas station to get my rolling papers.
Good on them. I've lost too many relatives to cancer.
I like tobacco. I keep having cravings for a cigarette but I limit myself to maybe MAYBE one pack a month. I know the cravings are probably a budding addiction, but I really enjoy the taste and- strangely enough- the smell. It's like alcohol- something that I treat myself with when I think I deserve it.

My local news station posted this on there Facebook page and the idiots on there are defending that cigarettes are as bad as candy and should be removed also.
Isn't that just treating the problem, not stopping it? Although anything to eliminate that smoke factor is pretty neat-o.
It's unlikely they're going to take $2 billion in smoking sales completely off the market. It's just going somewhere else. Continuing to sell (maybe at a reduced capacity) while using the equivalent of that lost revenue to proactively help smokers quit might be a more effective anti-smoking strategy. You can't stop the problem without treating it.
My local news station posted this on there Facebook page and the idiots on there are defending that cigarettes are as bad as candy and should be removed also.
While sugar can contribute to factors that cause cancer, it's no where near smoking which can affect not only the user but those around them.
tobacco is bad for you
Astounding, what about the internet? I've also heard that oxygen in large quantities is also bad for you. I guess you all missed the point, it's a fucking blanket statement... I would have been much better off saying bad things are bad
Could've.. y'know.. put those $2 billion into a better solution, like handing out free nicotine gum for an ad campaign to help stop smokers.
step 1, eleminate supply step 2, treat the remaining addictions you can't treat a problem while continuing to expand the problem [editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
exactly this their PR department is saying that it's for the "greater good" but businesses as large as CVS do not give one single fuck about the health of their customers they're in it to make money some accountant somewhere came to the conclusion that their medical side could make more money than selling tobacco products
someone probably did a risk management chart and found its probably cheaper in the long run to go with no tobacco, espeacially with tobacco companies switching away from tobacco entirely with e-cigs which starting this year are now can only be produced by big tobacco companies. but i think there has been a major shift in companies like CVS who are in the healthcare industry to try to be healthier, that being said they still sell alcohol which probably does slightly less damage than cigs
Bold move for any company, but still good.
As a smoker I'll throw in my 2 cents. Why the fuck did they ever sell them in the first place? I thought CVS was supposed to keep people from dying :v:
Although I don't condone taking away the right to smoke (just keep it outside) I can understand their reasoning. nice you know what I phrased this post weird but don't think I mean "OMG CVS IS TAKING AWAY OUR RIGHTS" because I just can't bother to think of better words to use here also cvs is a business they have the right to do what they want anyway I mean in general all the smoking stigma.
Astounding, what about the internet? I've also heard that oxygen in large quantities is also bad for you.
one is a heckuva lot worse than the other
Astounding, what about the internet? I've also heard that oxygen in large quantities is also bad for you.
lol tobacco in pretty much any quantity is bad for you. I say that as an occasional smoker.
cvs never had any good cigarettes anyway, just like really generic ones.
