There have been no reports of injuries or damage. A thick ash cloud is covering much of the central North Island. The volcanic alert level for Mt Tongariro has risen from 1 to 2, while the aviation colour code has been raised to red. Roads are closed, flights are likely to be disrupted and nearby residents are advised to stay indoors as ash and rock spews from the mountain. Police closed the Desert Road (State Highway 1) between Rangipo and Waiouru and State Highway 46 west of Rangipo, and had received reports of light ash falling on both roads. They had also received reports of ash falling as far east as State Highway 5 near Te Haroto and onto Napier City itself. GNS Science is monitoring the seismic activity on the mountain, and has raised its aviation colour code to red, meaning it is likely a significant amount of ash will be emitted into the atmosphere. Mt Tongariro last erupted from November 1896 until October 1897, following eruptions in 1869 and 1892. Tongariro's close neighbour Mt Ruapehu erupted in 1995 and 96, causing chaos for air travellers as ash disrupted flights in and out of the nation's main airport at Auckland, 300km north.
Those are some kickass mountains.
The article picture makes me want to watch Lord of the Rings again.
The volcanic alert level for Mt Tongariro has risen from 1 to 2, while the aviation colour code has been raised to red.
Does this mean no air traffic or what?
here's hoping it will have no effect on any filming done for the third part of the hobbit
Does this mean no air traffic or what?
No it means only planes painted red can fly over the area.
here's hoping it will have no effect on any filming done for the third part of the hobbit
Dude! Use ash cloud as backdrop, save millions on Smaug CG effects!!
Fuck! I'm supposed to move to Auckland on the 21st! D:
The article picture makes me want to watch Lord of the Rings again. Does this mean no air traffic or what?
No, just means an eruption is underway and that a significant amount of ash has been released into the atmosphere
Are the kakapo's all right?...
Dude! Use ash cloud as backdrop, save millions on Smaug CG effects!!
Would be cool as fuck if they used it for mt doom.
Fuck! I'm supposed to move to Auckland on the 21st! D:
I hope you make it over here ok!
If any of you are fully able to understand it, here's the Wellington VAAC's forecast graphic of the ash cloud: [thumb]http://vaac.metservice.com/vaa_images/vaa.0401-08-2012_3.prog00.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://vaac.metservice.com/vaa_images/vaa.0401-08-2012_3.prog06.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://vaac.metservice.com/vaa_images/vaa.0401-08-2012_3.prog12.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://vaac.metservice.com/vaa_images/vaa.0401-08-2012_3.prog18.png[/thumb] Text advisory: http://vaac.metservice.com/vaa/0401-08-2012_3

Still pretty cool though.
So not much is affected then, the ash cloud just drifts over the sea? Still pretty cool though.
According to the graphic, that's what it's looking like. If I'm understanding things correctly, that's the ash cloud's position at 20K feet.

It's a pretty dark night out here tonight, usually there would be a glow of blue from the moon's reflection. Now it's just a sheet of muddy grey from the volcanic ash above my town.
Fuck! I'm supposed to move to Auckland on the 21st! D:
you'll be alright mate
http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1203469 oh fuck oh fuck it's happening
Because New Zealand is right next to Italy, right?
Save the sheep !
Because New Zealand is right next to Italy, right?
I was just pointing out the irony of a report of an erupting volcano so soon before an article being posted about the possible threat of a super volcano. It's 5:40 AM here and I'm not funny. Please don't hate me.
It's also raining as well now, I wonder how ash and water mix, never gave it much thought.
Goddamnit Frodo.
Dammit I was there just 2 months ago. Why couldn't it have happened then :smith:
