• Linux & a notebook

Hey I bought a notebook a while ago and it came with Windows XP Home Edition. I was thinking of trying Linux and heard that its quite good for notebooks and laptops more then Windows. How would I go about installing it on my notebook, it's a Compaq Mini 110c-1120sa , and obviously doesn't have a CD drive, however I have an external Hard Drive and various USB Sticks at my disposal. Do you think it would be worth the change from Windows XP Home? and would it be hard to get my wireless internet etc working on Linux?
Try it and see, get Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition onto one of those usb sticks using UNetbootin and run it from there. If you like it, install it proper.

Well I'm liking it and have created a partition, just wondering how I get a 'desktop' like in windows? It currently looks like this:
If you want a desktop, get the regular Ubuntu 10.04 [editline]06:51PM[/editline] Oh you have already installed it.
Yeah, how do I transform it from the above to a normal desktop?
IIRC you get to select that when you login
Lucky for you I stopped being an Arch fanboy just long enough to install 10.04 netbook on my netbook. Go to the system tab, scroll down until you see "Login Screen". Click that motherfucker. Go to the dropdown menu and select GNOME. Restart. GNOME will take a bit longer to load up. It also may run slower but I have absolutely no idea. I know the netbook GNOME, what you are seeing now, was optimized for the netbook. I don't know if the normal GNOME was as well.
