A customer had hired the owner of Toronto’s Le Dolci bakery to create the most extravagant cupcake possible. So Sanguedolce gathered the fanciest ingredients she could acquire from around the world – 24-karat gold flakes, limited-edition Courvoisier cognac, sea salt from Carmargue, France, and some of the finest chocolate on the planet. The result? An ultra-luxurious cupcake with a $900 price tag. Sanguedolce often receives requests for grandiose custom cakes, but never has such a tall order come in such a tiny package. “This was the smallest one for that kind of price range,” she says. The customer, whom Sanguedolce declined to name, ordered the cupcake for his wife’s birthday last month. He wanted the finished product to include some of his wife’s favourite items – and, most of all, he wanted to impress her. Money, it appeared, was no object. So what goes into a $900 cupcake? A pastry cream filling, flavoured with Krug Collection Brut Champagne (about $1,000 a bottle). Buttercream frosting, made with butter from Normandy and 70-per-cent cacao chocolate from luxury Italian chocolatier Amedei, specialty coffee, French sea salt, organic cane sugar and Tahitian vanilla beans. A handmade chocolate cup dusted with gold flakes and surrounded by a ring of sugar diamonds. Decorative elements, such as fondant flowers, a delicate fondant branch and leaves painted with edible gold, and a cascade of champagne caviar bubbles, made using a molecular gastronomy technique. And finally, a pipette of the Courvoisier cognac, to be drizzled on top before it was eaten. I don't understand who would buy this.
I have a feeling it probably doesn't even taste all that great. Half of those ingredients seem to be added just because they're expensive and 'fancy'.
I don't understand who would buy this.

Le Dolci
Reddit confirmed.
I don't understand who would buy this.
...If I was a wealthy, old fuck? I probably would.

It looks more like a prop you brag about having than eating.
It looks more like a prop you brag about having than eating.
Welcome to the world of luxury goods
Every time I see some kind of food with gold in it all I can think is how much of a waste of perfectly good gold it is. There isn't exactly a lot of the stuff.

I'd rather fund super-scientists or wells in Africa if I had that kind of money as petty change. And as for the gold, you could probably make a fair few microchips with that.
That's pretty damn nasty, honestly.
plain wasteful
Sea salt from France? They couldn't even afford to get Greek sea salt? What is this peasant trash ps people getting mad about this, they were paid to make the most extravagant cupcake possible so no shit they went all out like it or not rich people are allowed to spend some money on whimsical interests too
You aren't wealthy unless you've literally shit out gold.
Rich people aren't content to just have all the money and power; they also need to flaunt their superiority with useless, extravagant expenditures. They need to remind all of us just how little a fuck they need to give to get by.

He wants to make his wife happy and He has the money to give his wife a really cool (but admittedly over-extravagant) gift for her birthday. Yeah it's kind of ridiculous but it's also ridiculous to say he's doing this to flaunt his superiority or some stupid shit like that.
he gave her just a single cupcake? lol how poor is he?
Good to know we are putting humanity's time and effort into such things. Who says money is flawed?
Good to know we are putting humanity's time and effort into such things. Who says money is flawed?
well at least money is better than bartering or a gift or ration economy

I thought burning currency is illegal, But i guess someone found a loophole where they can eat it instead
idk about you guys but if i had a seemingly endless wealth i'd spend it on stupid shit like this because why not? stop getting angry at someone elses private purchases?
idk about you guys but if i had a seemingly endless wealth i'd spend it on stupid shit like this because why not? stop getting angry at someone elses private purchases?
A lot of the criticism is aimed towards a society that as a whole glorifies needless, extravagant, wastage like this.
A lot of the criticism is aimed towards a society that as a whole glorifies needless, extravagant, wastage like this.
The fact of the matter is though, is that a large portion of that society is basically saying that this is incredibly wasteful and pointless, which is contrary to the 'everyone glorifies needless, extravagant, wastage' line of reasoning. I mean maybe that was true 10 years ago but nowadays people don't exactly glorify wealth, as all it does is get a lot of people mad at you.
If sewage was ridiculously expensive you could bet the richest of motherfuckers would have some on display in a glass tank
I don't think anyone keeps ambergris on display.
Only $900? Shit, I'd buy it just so I could say I've ate a $900 cupcake.
A lot of the criticism is aimed towards a society that as a whole glorifies needless, extravagant, wastage like this.
If it has been demanded, which obviously it has as a bloke put an order in for it, it's neither needless nor wasted.
does it go out of date?
