joe sample knows about Florida drivers; just stare into his eyes.. can you see the disdain?
South Florida is the nation’s fourth-most-dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians, according to a report issued Tuesday, with people on foot being run down by motor vehicles at almost triple the average rate for the rest of America. And around the rest of the state, the numbers look even more dismal, according to the report. The three U.S. cities with worse records than the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach axis: Jacksonville, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Orlando, in ascending order of infamy. State officials were not inclined to argue with the grim portrayal of Florida’s pedestrian safety, or lack of it. “They have some very valid points,” conceded Billy Hattaway, point man for the Florida Department of Transportation’s efforts to make streets safer for foot traffic. “We have some real problems.” The report, Dangerous by Design 2014, was issued by a pair of urban-redesign activist groups, the National Complete Streets Coalition and Smart Growth America. It gives the United States in general low marks for pedestrian safety. More than 47,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents from 2003 to 2012, the report notes, “sixteen times the number of Americans who died in natural diasters — earthquakes, flood, hurricanes and tornadoes” during the same period. Using a measure it calls the Pedestrian Danger Index — a computation of the likelihood of someone on foot being killed by a passing vehicle, using data on traffic fatalities and the number of people who walk to work — the report placed South Florida at nearly the bottom of the barrel. The national average for the Pedestrian Danger Index is 52.2. South Florida’s score was 145.33. The raw numbers on which the index was based didn’t look much better. The only places that recorded a higher number than South Florida’s 1,539 pedestrian fatalities over the past decade were the much-larger New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. The state’s poor performance is partly rooted in its concentration of elderly residents — Florida has a higher percentage of residents over the age of 65 than any other state — and its explosive post-World War II growth, which occurred just as America was falling in love with the automobile. “That was when the infrastructure was focused on spreading out and moving fast,” said David Goldberg, one of Dangerous by Design’s authors. “It used to be that you had homes near city centers and that sort of thing. But after the war, Florida was particularly aggressive about building suburbs and wide roadways to get to them. You have lots of extra [road] capacity there, at high speeds.”
Little More in Source Well; what I can say when I tell you that it's true. I've seen horrible accidents; my ex-gf has been hit on her longboard and rolled over the hood but made it through without major injuries; my best friend had his car totaled in one of the shittiest t-bones I've ever seen (2000 mustang gt got it's bumper stuck in his front right wheel well and caved in his passenger side) thankfully he didn't get hurt, somehow; there are alot of people who merge between lanes without ever using the blinker; people who swerve often; A SHITLOAD of texters; but yeah. It depends on where you're at in Florida, but the general consensus of driving ability is pretty bad
I blame old drivers. You've got people like me who want to do 5 over the speed limit at any given time, so I merge into the passing lane and suddenly Grandma pops up doing 10 under in the passing lane "to be safer" and almost cause a huge accident.
last night I had a dream I was walking to publix and I got hit by a car. this is what living in south florida does to my head
I would say that the blame is on both sides. There's always drivers who go way too damn fast in a pedestrian-heavy area, and there's always pedestrians who don't even bother to look both ways before crossing and expect every several ton object going 20 miles an hour to stop in one second.
I think you're safer driving in Kabul than in south Florida, you people drive like you just robbed a bank.
This is what happens when Flordia man gets chased out of town, things get worse.
Still better than India... ...unless people drive at night with no lights at all and on the wrong side of the lane.
Still better than India... ...unless people drive at night with no lights at all and on the wrong side of the lane.
I've almost hit a teenage girl who was texting at night and didn't have her lights on. Granted I'm in Northern Florida but the drivers down here are just awful.
I'm glad I got out of that hell hole, especially Tampa. Tampa drivers just sucks dick when it comes to driving alot of the times.

And why do people do it ffs?
Is California in the title a joke or a typo?

People whose live's revolve around social media would rather read a text message than pay attention to the road and the 1,500 pound chunk of metal barreling down the highway at 75mph. Imho, old people are worse than people who text and drive. They never seem to check their blind spots or signal their merges, and for a person like me who drives a small VW golf, it's easy to not get noticed and run off the road trying to avoid an idiot merging into you. I've had dozens of close calls since I've moved back to Florida.

Driving around Miami is basically the same as taking part in a death race or something
As a Floridian I am not inclined to argue with any of this because most people that drive in Florida are fucking retards. I live in the Tampa-St Petersburg area and yeah it's bad. People don't let you merge onto the highways, people don't let you get OFF the highways, people cut you off, idiot pedestrians will jay-walk across a busy street without a care in the world. No one seems to care.
I live in Naples, ground zero for this shit. We have the highest concentration of old people, but it's worse than that... the old people are... extremely wealthy. The old bastards are the epitome of bad driving; they have slow reaction times yet drive 90 down a 40, don't use their blinkers to turn yet swerve all over the road, and text while driving. The worst part though, is that I have the feeling they WANT to hit you, or at least make you feel that way. If by some miracle they aren't on their phones and see you they regularly speed up to cut you off. This puts you in an awkward position where you're already in the middle of the road, but now that car going 40 you had time to run past is going 80ish, so you stop and think, "I guess I'll just wait in the middle lane until he passes- wait is he switching lanes? DODGE DODGE DODGE!" We really have some scum of the Earth people in this town.
Mmmm well if theres one good thing theyre known for, its that sweet sweet flowida owange juice
Is California in the title a joke or a typo?
attempt at joke Also I'm glad we have so many Floridians on FP to help people understand the fuckery :v: but we aren't worse than India.
I hate driving when I have to go home because the drivers in South Florida are fucking terrible. They do some of the most blatantly illegal things like turning right on red from the left-most lane.
Utah has excellent drivers. They're very polite and always let you in.

Just the other day, was leaving the underground parking lot of a mall, and some old guy was doing 30 in front of me. I almost had to stop midway through the exit, going upwards, because he went even slower with each bit of road he went further. I felt like my life went back in time even.
South Florida drivers are just bad in general, can't go anywhere without thinking you're gonna be struck by some granny in her car.
I took a road trip down there last year for christmas. I can concur that drivers down there are fucktarded beyond belief. Quite a few times I had to brake check myself because some dipshit thought a thirty year old Ford pickup could stop on a dime. Mine can because I take care of it, but dammit that's not the point. Dumbasses.
its the canadians.
No one told me my state split into South Florida and North Florida
Port Charlotte was pretty nice. Went to middle/high school down there and there wasn't that many bad drivers.

I've tried actually texting while driving in Euro Truck and did 45% damage in the time it took to send one text. :v: How do people do it?

I'd be road pizza in minutes.
A lot of it is street racers / people who think their honda civic is fast. I drive a crx and everyone trys to race me.
