• Ukraine crisis: France, Germany threaten Russia over poll
France and Germany have threatened Russia with further sanctions if Ukraine's presidential election on 25 May fails to go ahead. President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a statement they feared further destabilisation of Ukraine. They also said referendums planned by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine for Sunday would be illegal. They called for a visible reduction in Russian forces on the Ukrainian border. Russia is estimated by Nato to have some 40,000 troops near the border, though Moscow says they have been pulled back. Ukraine's interim President Olexander Turchynov, meanwhile, warned the referendums could result in the "self-destruction" of regions that vote in favour of federalisation. They're just figuring out this now?
Because threatening sanctions have worked out so well before.
Because threatening sanctions have worked out so well before.
Threatening, maybe not, but actually enforcing them has proven quite effective. The ruble's value has already dropped significantly, causing a panic as investors flee the market. It won't stop Putin, though, as he's willing to break Russia's economy in order to take control of Ukraine.

Putin is willing to break Russia for control of Ukraine because in the long run, the economy will bounce back at some point. Putin clearly doesn't give a damn so what's the point?

It's an image thing, really, and the only solid way to stop Putin would be military threats, but that's obviously extremely dangerous and could aggravate the crisis.

It's all clear now. We put Putin down.
This is the most empty threat you could think of. Basically, Russia just have to say "Okay, you're a new President" to the winner, however it says nothing about Russia threating him well after election. Just gotta aknowledge that mantle of "in charge of all this mess" get passed to next person. How convenient!
It's all clear now. We put Putin down.
More like Putin him six feet under.

Russia doesn't care about sanctions. Only military aggression might stop them from taking the rest of Ukraine now
Russia doesn't care about sanctions. Only military aggression might stop them from taking the rest of Ukraine now
Which is what needs to happen to stop all of this nonsense
Who volunteers their people to die.
Who volunteers their people to die.
Russia does have a history... :v:
Could someone please elaborate how Russia has anything to do with the election failing or not? Putin has literally said he supports the may 25th election in Ukraine, saying "it is a step in the right direction" and has even expressed wishes to the separatists to postpone their referendum. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/07/ukraine-putin-calls-for-postponement-of-referendum-on-autonomy-live-updates This is a bit ridiculous, even through Russia is backing off from the situation, somehow they are still being threatened for sanctions for what goes on in a country that they are not involved in.
An economy down the shitter isn't something you could just brush off like that.
It is in an autocratic regime with a strong military and, at least at face value, a strong supporting populace of the regime.
"this murderer clearly doesnt give a damn about punishment so why even bother trying to arrest him"
Yeah, except this isn't an arrest. This is more like an expensive fine for murdering. To which the murderer goes, "That's it? Sure, I'll pay!" and continues his serial killing.
Isn't Russia actually taking a pretty serious hit though? I mean Mastercard and Visa have stopped servicing the major Russian banks. That's a big blow. It's not like Russia's encomy was fantastic before the sanctions either. It doesn't really have much to bounce back to. :v:
Mastercard and Visa still work pretty well. They were shutdown for like a week but no longer.
