• WD 250 Gig Passport External Hard Drive Failing?
    5 replies, posted
I bought an External Hard Drive 3 years ago that I use mainly for my Digital Portfolio and Videos. Lately, its been having I/O Errors when I try copying videos over onto it. Smaller files, like Pictures, copy over fine. But anything larger then 200-300 megabytes makes it stop, come up with the I.O error, and freezes itself(where I cannot X it out unless I totally unplug it). So, is it dying? Or is there a way to fix it to stop doing this? I have 134gigs free right now on it.
Try running HD Tune on it to see the S.M.A.R.T. data.
If this is your portfolio you might want to have it backed up online, it sounds very important and would likely really suck to lose.
Backup any important data on it immediately, regardless of SMART readings.
Backed up more or less everything. I tried running something that goes through it and "repairs" it, and it seems to have temporarily worked. If the problem persists, I'll come back with what I got.
Use WINDLG. Also you should check if it's still under warranty since if it's got bad sectors, those should be covered by it. Bad sector repairs either solve the problem for good or don't last that long so you should try that.
