After months of speculation, Angry Birds creator Rovio has officially confirmed that it is moving forward with a full-length animated movie. Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce with Iron Man Executive Producer and former Chairman of Marvel Studios David Maisel signed on to executive produce.
“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock,” Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment said in a statement. “With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”
The 3D CG-animated feature will be financed entirely by Rovio itself, allowing the film to be produced wholly outside of the studio system. For now a "Summer 2016" release has been earmarked.
“I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said Cohen. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."
The news comes on Angry Birds' third anniversary - the original Angry Birds hit the App Store exactly three years ago, on December 11 2009. Today's feature fim announcement is the culmination of Rovio's multimedia ambitions. In July 2011 the company changed its name from Rovio Mobile to Rovio Entertainment, a name that better reflected the company's desire to internally produce Angry Birds entertainment outside of the core mobile games.
Oh god. We should have listened.
Will people still even care about AB in 2016? How much can they milk a smartphone game
This could be terrible but with the Despicable Me and Iron Man producers I just have no idea. There's a certain point where something is milked so much that nothing it produces isn't sour.
I haven't even played it yet.

This is gonna sound so dumb, but I think I'd rather see Google Maps: The Movie or pretty much anything else. When I think "Angry Birds: The Movie", I think of it as one of those straight to DVD movies they keep at the register at supermarkets so kids will beg their parents to buy it(and some candy).
How would an Angry Birds movie work anyway?
It's not like the series is known for it's searing intellectual plot.
What
How do you make a full length movie about kamikaze birds that keep launching themselves at pigs

In the dark future of 2286 there is only war, The birds have been sent on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines to rescue their eggs, But they discover the true eggs are inside their heart. A heartwarming action comedy coming 2016
Oh my god, it's just a game about throwing birds at blocks to kill pigs. :I

The red bird also falls in love with the yellow one
[sp]I'd be surprised if they didn't do this, producers love to shove forced romance into shitty movies like this[/sp]
I can see this turning out to be a decent, lighthearted cartoon animal movie.
Why are you guys so upset?

It's been 3 years since it came out, now it seems more popular than ever before
How the fuck can you make a movie out of this? It's probably as dumb as it sounds.
They already have quite a few animated shorts on YouTube

Who will give one piece of hersheys drop poo about this by the time it is released?
Maybe it wont be so bad.
The little promo cartoons for Angry Birds are actually pretty funny, so this could turn out decent.
First trailer released, omg;
