By injecting the eggs with the DNA from various insects known for expressing keen senses of smell, the team was able to create a robotic nose that can detect molecules at levels as low as a few parts per billion. Eggs from the African Clawed Frog have been used in research before to express olfactory receptors, but they had not been integrated into an electronic sniffing system like this. By injecting the eggs with DNA from fruit flies, silk moths, and diamond back moths, the bioengineers were able to coax the immature eggs into producing the olfactory sensors of those insects, which are known for their ability to detect specific gases and pheromones.
Who nose what technologies this breakthrough will lead to?
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
They're sniffing out the cure, don't worry.
I guess you can say, the future smells of technological achievements.
I'm a wee bit confused.. is this robotics or biology or some weird cyborg?
I'm a wee bit confused.. is this robotics or biology or some weird cyborg?
they are using modified frog eggs for the robo nose
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
HIV is now considered to be an incurable disease.
I'm a wee bit confused.. is this robotics or biology or some weird cyborg?
It's biology. They injected DNA from multiple animals into one egg to create a chimera nose, that I think they hooked up to machines to read the information from the nose. This is awesome it'll be amazing for airports and border crossings. And anyone who invests in bio tech will wake up to the rich, mahogany like smell of success. [editline]12:38AM[/editline]
HIV is now considered to be an incurable disease.
AHAHHA No, there's a cure for it, all you have to do is find DNA crucial to its operation that is Junk DNA in humans, eliminate the gene or stop it being expressed and then bam, HIV is stopped dead in its tracks and the person afflicted is fine, then you can give them drugs to combat the virus and reverse its effects and then over time they will be as good as knew.
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
ffs when are you people going to realize that these guys are completely separate from the guys who research cures for that sort of thing seriously it's like you're all one huge conglomerate of stupid, these guys making a robonose has no impact on the cure for HIV
Complaining about them wasting time on this is like complaining about Valve wasting time on TF2...They have different sects (or Valve, teams) doing different things
This idea stinks. Why am I such a nosey bastard when it comes to these things.
This shit really works guys, look they even gave me a finger for my nose.
Pheromones? Will people with this be sexually attracted to insects? This is going to be worse than the furry craze.
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
It's not exactly somthing you just get up and cure overnight. Why don't you go try and cure HIV faster than professional scientists.
Pheromones? Will people with this be sexually attracted to insects? This is going to be worse than the furry craze.
Arthropomorphisism! And, no. If it was, it would've already caught on. There's nothing stopping people from drawing that stuff, and they don't.
Somebody's been snortin' something
Pheromones? Will people with this be sexually attracted to insects? This is going to be worse than the furry craze.
How would having a bugs nose make you attracted to insects? They have a human brain which will sort data and analyse shit exactly like a human so there will be no new fetishes, and i'm pretty sure humans are only attracted to human pheromone scents and at certain concentrations.

Honestly, with all this genetic manipulation going on, we haven't created many chimeras, save for glow-in-the-dark mice, frost-resistant potatoes, GM grain, etc. Only really minor things, and very few animal chimeras. Is there some sort of international law that forbids the creation of chimeras or something? 'cause if there is I wanna kick the ass of whoever enforced that law.
"What have we got in the science bin?" "Uhh...some frog eggs and a bit of bug dna." "Can we make anything with that?" "Ummm, a smelling machine maybe?" "Ok, lets get to it then."

robots that can smell fear
Are you a freakin doctor or specialist ?
It's not exactly rocket science.
This could possibly create the lamest superhero ever.
It's not exactly rocket science.
Then why hasn't it been done? [editline]06:24PM[/editline]
This could possibly create the lamest superhero ever.
Smellman! With the power to...smell! A wet fart would be his kryptonite.
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
How about when you learn what the word 'Scientist' means.

The main issue with HIV is how rapidly it mutates when it replicates itself within helper T cells. Replication of HIV in such large numbers will inevitably cause several changes in base pairs and substitution of nitrogenous bases. Not to mention, HIV has RNA to start with, and not DNA. It can also be virtually inserted anywhere within a human's genome as well, provided it can bind to its respective sites.
ffs when are they going to cure HIV.
Right after you die of it.
How did I know this was going to be from Japan?
