Welcome to the wonderful world of Games Workshop. Since their opening in 1975 they have been known for producing plastic models of the highest quality, with multiple sprue's and looks. The main three ranges they sell currently are Warhammer, (fantasy middle ages) Warhammer 40k (Future Science fiction) and the Lord of the Rings. They have also made several other games, including:
Apocalypse (not to be confused with the expansion Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse)

Chaos Marauders A boardgame of 'orcish mayhem'.

Calamity
Chainsaw Warrior (solo play game)

Warhammer 40k was started in 1987 in the form of a boardgame called "rogue trader". It was actually more of a roleplaying game than a Wargame at that point. Then in 1993 Games Workshop responded to the requests for models aimed at a younger audience by bringing out the second edition of Warhammer 40k. And so it was in this edition that Warhammer 40k turned into a wargame, whilst Rogue Trader became a new sub Franchise. There were a few mistakes that Games Workshop had made like making the rules too complex, and giving characters abilities on the role of a die.
Four new races had also been introduced, including the Ordo Malleus, the Ordo hereticus, the Tau and the Necrons. The Ordo armies were re-released however just before the end of the 3rd edition, just as the popularity of the board game rose in the United States. My first models are from the fourth edition, which started in 2004, and whilst not having the major changes of the last three editions, the quality of the models had significantly improved. Fifth edition came out in 2008 and features a whole load more models, including those that had been cut out in previous editions because of imbalance. New models came out every 2-3 months and now they have started to escape the tyranny of no-sprue citadel metal models.
The history of the universe itself is set in the 41st millennium, where Mankind has conquered vast amounts of the Milky Way but has started to face problems, namely Traitors, the return of ancient metallic warriors known as the Necrons, the vast invasions of the Orks, who live only to fight, the arrival of the Tyrannids, monsters who have come in tendrils of fleets from beyond the Milky Way, and the horrific monsters and corruption of the force known as the "Warp" used for travel, psychic abilities and several other things.
The story itself is very developed and is told in dozens of books and such. If you want to read more then have a read on this encyclopedia: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

This was also started in 1983, with little emphasis on the story of the races and a complete lack of any world information. However, it was highly praised for its unique and thrilling combat mechanic which was said to be much more simple and exceptionally playable. The second edition was much the same but the background information had been deeply delved into and a world map had been designed. More realistic army guidelines were also incorporated.
Third edition was much more complicated than all of the other editions, but features impressive new mechanics such as charging, morale, and new uses for select troop types. Fourth and Fifth edition was widely known as "herohammer" because of the imbalance between Heroes, making troops exist entirely as cannon fodder. Some rules were rewrote, like magic. Boxed campaigns were also introduced.
6th, 7th, and 8th edition brang the balance back into the games with a plethora of new models and re-works which made heroes important, but not game-winners.
I know nothing of the history of this range, other than it is set in a medieval esque world.
Again, the history can be read in the lexicanium.
Q/A
Q) These models are expensive, why is that?
A)Nothing comes close to the quality and wide range of options the kits offer. Buying decent models has never been cheap, so if you are a cheapskate hobbyist then you should try some shitty Chinese make.
Q) Where can I buy these?
A) If you don't live in Britain, then the easiest way to get them is through the online service:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/ (if you want a list of all the shops then buy a copy of White Dwarf, the offical magazine and check the back pages or search around on that site)
And if you do, there are a dozen shops in most counties, which can also be found through White Dwarf.
Q) Can Video games be discussed in this thread?
A)Yes
Q) What will I need?
A) Glue, paint, an airgun (optional) tissue, water and "third hand" holders (optional).
If you know anyone who plays the series please encourage them to view the thread, thank you.
They're expensive like hell

Besides, I'm incompetent at painting, so I never got into it, even though I wanted to.

Just because you mentioned it earlier doesn't mean they're not expensive like hell, does it?

Just trying to get my own opinion out.
:saddowns:
I got a worn out Talisman from my uncle a while back.
Wish I had somebody to play with. It's just sitting at the top of my cupboard collecting more dust :saddowns:

Ooh, don't forget about Blood Bowl, you can't forget about Blood Bowl :woop:

They may be expensive, but you can use the models for YEARS (until a nw codex is release dand even then have them as counts as)
Fun little fact: GW started as a board game importer.
Just started the resurrection of my I.G collection, Ive got around 30 guardsmen, a Valkrie and a Leman Russ. Im kind of dissapointed that theres no real elite squads that aren't metal, although I am definitely going to get a Steel Legion squad regardless.

Sex to the eyes.
Well, there are a few non metal special regiments, only problem, they're forgeworld and they're resin.
I'd love to get back into Warhammer, maybe play a Vampire Counts army. The trouble is, the people who play at my local GW are either massive assholes who I have no interest in being near or are the borderline retarded people you knew from school. I walked past a few days ago, and all the people I tended to avoid in school/college were in there. I might play at one in another town.
If you play VC For the love of god don't play a ton of corpse carts/black coaches, I ended up playing a VC army that had that, as a magic heavy skaven, not fun at all (I mean come on, Skaven magic doesnt work half the time and when it does, it half of the time turns against the skaven, thats the fun of skaven)
Bit the bullet and have invested in rulebooks and a few units. Guess I'm playing now. I hope the people are more pleasant than they used to be, I only stopped playing because of assholes.
I'm going Vampire Counts, bought a few zombies and skeletons to model and paint before I start making a list. I think I'll go with hordes of zombies and skeletons though, that should be fun.
I heard the recent news with the recent switch from metal to resin models, and the price hike.
I'm all for the switch to resin, but goddamn, it isn't as if these models are expensive as fuck already.
However, in light of this, I'm starting to make molds of parts I need for conversions.
Anyway, I got me a 1000 point guardsmen army, and I'm currently working on a skittarii conversion. (Techpriest guardsmen) Which might turn out into a Adeptus Mechanicus army.
Note, this is still a WIP

Bah, GW just overprices their, well... everything.
Still, i like the fluff part of the experience. Although I still haven't got around to getting a single 40k books. Either Titanicus or one of the Whacky Adventures of Ciaphas Cain, hero of the Imperium.

Also, seeing evolution of the models edition by edition is freaking awesome.
When is Dark Millennium coming out?

Very interesting concept, I would recommend making the eyes illuminative with red. Would give the model a slightly mysterious touch.
The armour is a brilliant attempt as well, something im usually scared of doing. Might be a good idea to have some specific item to do with the Adeptus Mechanicus, maybe a medallion, a book or a satchel of scrap?

Thank you, I was actually planning on painting any glow-y bits green, since the robes will red; Give it that contrast. As for notable symbols or motifs, I was going to paint a white gear pattern as a trim to the robes. However, I didn't think of adding books/purity seals/scriptures. I might sculpt a few on next time I work on them.
I'm mostly going off this picture as reference:

Speaking of which, here's some more pics: (Copy pasta'd from my bolter and chainsword thread)

I was tossing around the idea of making an entire admech army, but I am unsure as to what codex to use.
Man up and make your own.

Use Imperial Guard, the doctrines section is really good for tailoring your force into something unique.

I was actually considering guard at first, since I'm so used to the codex, but they feel too squishy for admech imo. Even if I took veteran squads with grenadiers doctrine.
I am in desperate need for a good way to strip paint. I should get my Blood Angels back up and running. I love them, they are just painted horribly.
Just went out and bought a platoon command squad and a finecast commissar. Didn't realize it was plastic until I saw the most beautiful miniatures display I have ever seen in my local store.
RayvenQ, which army do you play (the most)?
RayvenQ, which army do you play (the most)?
He doesn't play any army. He just places a single Commissar/Inquisitor (depending on his mood) on the field. then keeps asking Fluff-related questions to the opponent. For every wrong answer, he removes a single enemy figure and asks another question. For every right answer, he gives the opponent his turn.
He faces defeat very rarely.
Do you guys know any good ways to train the steadiness of your hands or maybe a good painting technique? I have a hard time painting fine details like the reflection on a speehz mareen's eye.

Change to Necrons. Just dip them into the paint.
Necrons must be the least fun army out there. I'll stick to my Blood Angels.

Does anyone here prefer Vallejo paint over GW paint?

Get your hands on a cleaning product called "Simple green". it works on metal and plastic models. Just grab an old plastic ice cream tub or some sort of container, mix 50-50 simple green to water, leave your models to soak for about 24 hours, scrub them with an old toothbrush under HOT water. Repeat a few times if needed.
Protip: if you leave plastic models in it too long, they will begin to lose detail

This is a bit difficult to do at first. I keep my hands together when painting. Its a bit difficult to explain, so heres some pictures of what I mean:

On a side note, the model shown above is complete.

Thanks for the painting tips, but I live in the Netherlands and we don't have Simple Green here. I'll try to find a replacement. Still, thanks for helping :v:
[editline]4th June 2011[/editline]
I e-mailed a Dutch Simple Green partner. He doesn't have a online shop so I hope I can make an arrangement through e-mail. It seems to be the only retailer in the Netherlands that has it.

No problem. I actually just found this interesting thread on some other really useful paint stripper on dakkadakka, it may be of some help: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/365067.page
I found a Dutch guide on how to remove paint from Warhammer miniatures. Thanks for the help noise_maker.
