If you fellows haven't been following the game I highly recommend trying it out now. Most of the content the game promised is still in the works, but it'll give you a feel for how nicely ships handle.
There's a definite learning curve to flying, but remember that you're in space, and you can decouple your ship from its direction of flight without "stalling". However, that disables your main thrust while you maneuver, so it's best to go back into coupled quickly enough unless you're going for 100% decoupled. Free flight is perfect practice because there's no penalty for dying.

A perfect opporuntiy to turn a sceptic to a believer. I'll give this a download and crash into everything.

i still prefer elite dangerous
i still prefer elite dangerous
Well, Elite is actually a finished game. Star Citizen won't reach its 1.0 until late 2016 or early 2017. If you can call Elite 'finished'. Never felt more ripped off in my life :(
E:D is "finished" except the devs still want to do tons of stuff. They launched when they did with a polished reimplementation of the 1984 original, basically, because they didn't enjoy Star Citizen's massive crowdfunding avalanche and the luxury of releasing when it's ready. What E:D has now isn't worth the buy-in for me, but I'm not writing it off yet, it just needs to live long enough for the rest of the game to be built onto it.
My big problem with Elite now is that the devs have said they're going to make players pay again for most of those 'expansions'.
My only grief with Starcitizen is having to dish out hundreds of real life dollars for in game content
My only grief with Starcitizen is having to dish out hundreds of real life dollars for in game content
But you don't need to?
My big problem with Elite now is that the devs have said they're going to make players pay again for most of those 'expansions'.
To be fair, they've already done some awesome (free) post-launch support. If they keep adding these features and quality-of-life upgrades, I'm fine with paying for an optional expansion every once in a while.
My only grief with Starcitizen is having to dish out hundreds of real life dollars for in game content
You don't though. You'll be able to earn everything in the game without too much work once it's released, and they're soon going to let you test out ships without having to spend any money. The ability to buy the ships is to support development.
My only grief with Starcitizen is having to dish out hundreds of real life dollars for in game content
to put it simply, everything is the equivalent of kickstarter fund rewards. They want to reward you for putting money into the project as they develop it, and have to scale it because people just keep throwing money at them. Big shit's behind a ridiculous paywall because if everything was dirt cheap (or just given away), the starting system at launch would be bumper to bumper traffic with capital ships and half kilometer long mining behemoths and nobody would have much reason to play the game to earn their way up any ladders I dropped 60 bucks into the demo stuff because hey, that's the cost of any other game, and so far it's proving itself in going above and beyond what I'd expect from anything else at that price. I get to participate in beta and I start out with a nice little fighter jet so I can at least get straight into merc work, instead of bumbling about in an awkward little hauler at first.
I thought it was the only way to get ships, my mistake.
