Having cleaned up all other crime in the city, NYC police rough up, handcuff and detain 15-year-old
Cops roughed up and handcuffed a Harlem student after mistakenly believing that the 15-year-old was too old to use a student MetroCard, the teen claims.
And now the NYPD has opened an investigation into the allegation, the Daily News has learned.
Alexis Sumpter, 15, wasn’t arrested or given a summons during the July 26 interaction — but she says she was shaken and humiliated by the experience.
“They called me liar,” she remembers. “Then they grabbed me by my arms and flung me up the stairs. I kept saying, I’m only 15 — why are you guys doing this?
“They said they didn’t owe me an explanation,” she said.
According to Sumpter, who is a student at Harlem Village Academies, she had just finished summer school and was heading downtown for her first day at a marketing internship on Canal St.
She swiped her student MetroCard — which the Department of Education said is valid until Aug. 17 and was being used properly — at the 125th station and took a seat on the platform bench as she waited for the A train.
Two men approached her, Alexis said, but they were in plainclothes and she was worried they were police imposters. The cops might have approached after seeing a light on the subway turnstile that indicated that a student card had been swiped.
They demanded to know her age, she said. She told them she was 15, but that she had no ID because she was recently mugged for her iPhone and wallet.
“They didn’t approach me in a calm manner and they were very rude the whole time,” she said. “They were talking to me like they were trying to show they were superior to me.”
Near the entrance to the station, a third cop got involved, pressing her face against the wall while the two others cuffed her.
The cops called her dad, William, a Con Ed worker, who vouched for her age. Still disbelieving, they called her mom, who said she raced to the scene, where cops told her that Alexis looked like an adult.
The mom, Marisol Sumpter, raced back to the family home, got her daughter’s birth certificate, and returned to the station — and only then was Alexis uncuffed and released.
It’s not unusual for police to take into custody someone who is suspected of wrongdoing and has no identification, but Alexis’ mother could not believe that three cops would spent 90 minutes on such a trivial matter.
“I definitely think it was over the top,” said Marisol Sumpter, 32, who works in real estate. “They used physical force that was not necessary.”
Alexis, who went to the hospital because the handcuffs caused swelling on her wrists, now takes a different train.
“I don’t want to see them again,” she said. “I don’t want to have to go through that again.”
The NYPD confirmed the probe, but refused to answer any other questions about the incident.
Jesus, it's like Gotham in the third movie. All of the major crime is gone so they start getting bored.
Did that use the entire character limit for titles? It is a serious question, not being sacastic or trolling.
Get rid of their funding.

I missed putting in a period, dunno what the cap is.

hi welcome to harlem
Reminds me of those stories of police corruption surrounding Adrian Schoolcraft, NYPD giving open container citations to people with gatorade because they need to meet their quota.
its funny because police don't have a quota in America
it's actually illegal for police to have one
I'm believing it was a legitimate mistake on the police's behalf, since I sincerely don't believe they were just bored, sitting around and saw the 15 year old and said "Hey, know what would be funny? If we harassed the shit out of that girl." And then the rest of them actually agreed on that.
Police officers often take an aggressive and dominant behavior because their training tells them if they intervene and get to the scene of a crime THEY have to be the ones in charge and to take control of the situation
And how many times a day do you think a police officer deals with people lying through their teeth? Especially criminals trying to get out of trouble. "No officer, I didn't do it! I promise~"
They should give an apology but I doubt this was ~police brutality~
I'm sorry but I'm too distracted by your avatar, OP.

is yours a response
anyway on topic,
If they're done in new york they should just load the pigs in a truck and shuttle them to detroit
seriously that place needs a cleaning-up
I thought it was illegal to handcuff anyone under 16? in NY I mean.
Arresting someone for using a student metrocard? That's over the top no matter if the person actually was an adult and ineligible to use it. Fucking check for ID, if they don't have it, as in this case, either don't let them ride or take the card or something. It's not like anyone (except the MTA, and not even that really...) is getting hurt or anything. Normal fare is $2.25, would you handcuff and push around anyone else for stealing something worth that much?
Get rid of their funding.
No, seriously, do it.
They can live off the surplus they stockpiled from having a US military budget for as long as they did, and if we got rid of it entirely, maybe then the police department will pull their collective heads out of their asses and start doing their fucking job properly.
I would love to read this story.
But your avatar is VERY distracting.
death sentence is too quick for her for such a crime. She needs to rot and suffer in prison, sentence her to life.

Because no law enforcement is the best enforcement, right. You dont have to use the police - just dont go calling 911 when your house is on fire, you get robbed, shot, or your car gets stolen.

There are workarounds to that which some departments enforce.

you are wrong
i believe in having no education system and no police system ron paul 2012
15 and already working on a career with a mother who gave birth at 17 and is probably a successful real-estate agent. I'm actually impressed by this. A good amount of teen mothers wouldn't normally pursue a career like that or push their child to do it.
She seems like a nice lady.
America!
Well, mistakes can happen everywhere.
death sentence
The police can get really up in arms about student metrocards. I've gotten more than a few suspicious looks for using them during Regents Week, when HS students have off, anyway.

"no income" != "no cops". Not in New York. They would still have the money to enforce the law because of the multi-million dollar budget they have right now.
Unless they're pissing it all away on something they don't need in which case they'd have to sell it again, and learn how to budget correctly.

You are fucking stupid. Oh look this girl used a STUDENT METRO CARD, AND SHE LOOKS TOO OLD FOR IT! We're GONNA ARREST HER ASS! Makes sense.
They couldn't just TAKE THE CARD and make her go down to the station with ID to pick it up? Instead of wasting 90 minutes + time for paperwork, and now a fucking investigation. What the fuck stop wasting the taxpayers money cops.
