I am like, deathly afraid of plugging things in or powering things on. I happen to have a hobby involving computers. I normally have to get someone else plug the stuff in and turn it on.
By catastrophic failure, I mean a failure resulting in a thermonuclear detonation. Yeah, I'm fairly bad off.
Anyone else ever had this problem? What should I do?
Advice, Jokes, and Ball-Breaking welcome!
You should go outside.
Fuck man, I'm so close to getting this hooked up and plugged in. Each cable presents its own challenge! And after this I have two entire buttons to push!
If I don't report back, assume I am dead. :v:
Humans are strange... Afraid of things that don't exist or can't hurt us.
You should go outside.
Weird folks go outside too. Also, I'm not weird. I just have weird problems. My weird problems don't define me though.
I plugged my old computer on once.
The PSU blew up. While I was behind it.
yah that was fun, i am still scared of it. Even though I have unplugged/plugged stuff in now countless times. Still scared of that little switch behind the computer.

I was like that before until I had done that stuff a lot of times, and I realised that nothing is going to happen.

Problem is, I been doing this for about 7 years. Been scared of high power devices since childhood.
Also, got the computer plugged up after replacing the PSU. Works like a charm. Except it's got a power supply that's nearly 3x as powerful. And scarier.

You mean the rated wattage on it is three times as high? That just means it can handle higher wattages. I'd be more scared of a lower rated PSU if both were from the same brand.
And seriously (speaking generally of hardware problems), if something goes wrong, the computer is just going to not start/shut down/something not very scary in 99% of the cases.
I was fiddling with an old dell dimension and put in a agp 2.0 card into a ago 1.0 slot while the PC was on( death sentence)
then the gates of hell arose in the case sending out demon sparklers at me
You should work with old Supercomputers where you have voltage rails in the range of +5V, 60 AMPS or components beyond MTBF the will simply explode in a shower of sparks if you power it on during a full moon.
I pulled a RAM stick out of a PC while it was on, shit was pretty cool.
I cooked bologna on an old Pentium III without the heatsink on, am I cool?

Not until you make a sandwich with it,.
D: Not sure if I wanna go that far.
I wouldn't worry, Ive had PSU's blow up on me, plugs explode, wires crossing and all that jazz, there becomes a point were you just get used to it, the joys of working in IT with substandard hardware.
I once had a PSU exploded on me when I was young ( I was behind to tower, So it blew up in my face ), It did scare me off for anything that involved plugs or PSU's for a while.
I got myself once when I was about ten or so with one of these:

Felt like a warm hand tightly gripping my wrist, it was an interesting experience.

Advice from the thread that I just linked: "a one handed electrician is a living electrician - remember if you use two hands and *whoops* eh, complete a circut the path of curent flow is (as i have been told) through your chest (and heart) - so if you dont want to have electricity passing through your torso JUST USE ONE HAND and the *whoops* goes not much further than your wrist."
(Thank goodness the smartness system was removed in this case)
It's a theory so be careful regardless.
Just get zapped with 220 once. You will get over it.
(Dont do this)
^thats pretty dumb considering that we have deer feeders with shock guard on them and I touched it with one hand and still got shocked. ( I thought they were discharged )
edit: I was Ninja'd, not talking about the poster above me.

Once, I had a set of Christmas lights and one of the bulbs blew (it wasn't the fuse bulb).
I had the genuis idea of sticking a u-shaped bit of wire into the socket where of the bulb which had gone.
However, I didn't turn the mains off before doing that.
Never again.
I put a stick of RAM in my old-old gaming rig as an upgrade. Turned it on and one of the pins glowed red hot and there was a ton of smoke.

It still worked, but that RAM slot was charred in a very specific spot and obviously unusable. Weird. I wasn't even aware that there was enough current on the rails used for the RAM to be able to do that. Must have been a couple amps.
I've had a belt off 240V before, It hurts. Getting a shock is the day you learn to respect electricity and not fear it :)
Biggest shock I've had was from one of these.

I hated it, I was playing against my granddad though and because he used to be an electrician he didn't feel a thing.
I have one of them on my desk right now, it has a little switch on the side for "1 Shock" to "3 Shocks" as if a single shock isn't enough.

Yeah, I was a dumb ten year old. It was even plugged in to the mains, I'm probably lucky it wasn't switched on as well (this is Australia by the way, as you probably know we have switches on our mains outlets). Still blew one of our circuits though.

man I hate those things
we used to always play with them on christmas and I got shocked, jumped up and hit my head off of the top of the fireplace

Generally i'm not very scared of electricity though. Just take the proper precautions.
Did I ever mention I was zapped by lightning once? Trigger maybe?

I dunno man, it definitely feels like it's getting close to maxing out my service to that room. It's rated at 15A max current pull... and the room has 20A service running to it.
Makes the lights go really dim for a second or so. Worse than a refrigerator.
ur hur hur lightning zing

sorry
I remember I one time cut the cord to an alarm clock while it's still plugged in because I guess I thought it would be funny since its ringing and annoying. Anyway I got a large pop and bright flash. Scared the shit out of me.

Been shocked by 120. It's nothing compared to even and indirect shocking by lightning. Why am I not dead?
Been shocked by 120VAC outlet. As well as 208V from a three-phase transformer.
