The mighty yen and weak sales have combined to take a whack out of Nintendo, forcing the Japanese gaming firm to forecast an even bigger full-year loss.
The Wii and 3DS maker had previously estimated a net loss for the financial year ending in March of ¥20 billion (£164.2m), but it's now preparing itself to lose up to a whopping ¥65 billion (£533.9m).
Nintendo's once-groundbreaking Wii has been overtaken by motion-additions to Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox, and is showing its age. Meanwhile, the new iteration of its handheld console, the 3DS, has failed to ignite the market.
The Japanese firm cut its sales forecast of the Wii for the year to 10 million from 12 million and now reckons it will sell 14 million 3DS devices instead of 16 million – despite a "significant price revision" in August intending to shift more of the handhelds.
"We had higher expectations for the year-end season, but failed to meet them," President Satoru Iwata told media in Osaka.
The Japanese firm's net income for the October to December period was ¥21.9bn (£179.9m).
However, the company that brought the world the Super Mario brothers is not planning to be left behind for long. Iwata said that the new version of its Wii, the Wii U, would be going on sale in Japan, the US, Europe and Australia in the year end season.
Nintendo will be hoping that the U can raise its flagging fortunes, but the console won't be able to do anything about the strong yen or consumer reluctance to shop in the face of a possible double-dip recession. The firm is also facing competition in new places, such as fondleslab and smartphone gaming. ®
Wouldn't surprise me to see Nintendo go like Sega if the Wii U fails.

I'd be very surprised.
It's about time they stopped the retarded gimmicks and started making proper gaming controllers with more powerful gaming machines so that the developers won't be so limited in terms of graphics and content.
People who like games use them to relax and have fun. When you play a game, you want to sit back and enjoy yourself. Having to swing your arms around like a retard is not relaxing, it takes a lot of space around you, and in terms of controlling it is less accurate than using a normal controllers that you can hold still. Nintendo needs to go back to making games designed for people who like to play games, the current strategy of making games designed for people who usually do not like games is not working out.
The motion controls had a lot of potential but hardly anyone handled it right
in fact I think the only game I played on the wii that made good use of it was Metroid Prime 3
I remember when Twilight Princess was coming out and they were promising all this neat shit like your sword actually follows your movements with the remote and fishing and archery would work by miming the movements out with the nunchuck. look how that turned out.

I would absolutely love motion controls if developers would actually put it to good practical use.
Wouldnt complain if they stopped making their own consoles and started releasing stuff on the pc!

Skyward Sword used them perfectly.
yeah but by then it was a bit too late for the wii
yeah but by then it was a bit too late for the wii
Yup.
99% of the Wii games out there implemented motion controls for the sake of having them in, as opposed to exploiting them as a means to an end
Even nintendo's games were guilty as shit of this.
SHAKE TO SMASH
SHAKE TO SPIN
does anyone remember super mario galaxy's "multiplayer mode" lmao
I think E3 is what hurt them so much. Sony comes out show casing amazing games, and Nintendo has got a few retakes on classic games. That and the presentation of the Vita by Sony blew the 3DS away, so I'm surprised that they are even projecting 14 million sales.
oh well nintendo is crap anyways. their main market is children under 10 because most adults and teens want more mature developed systems and games such as a gaming pc or an xbox. the only good thing they ever made was mario which is now in my opinion one of the most outdated games out there, seriously nintendo has run it raw. too be honest it's their fault for losing that money because they can't understand what people actually want!!

"It was too late for the wii"
Just as it reaches nearing on 100 Million Consoles sold.

Good lord, ¥65 billion? That's almost $12!

what I meant is that it was a bit too late for it to really matter
I honestly don't even want the Wii U. At all.
I just want a Gamecube 2.
I was hoping that at this years E3 Nintendo would do a bit of a U-turn and go "Yes here we have this tablet controller, but we'll also have this normal controller as well (which isn't a wii remote)." It would just make everyone happy :v:.

If you recall, Sega royally fucked itself over by releasing multiple powerful but incompatible consoles immediately after eachother (remember the 32x and Saturn shitstorm?). They pissed of their dev pool and lost a fair chunk of their dev team.
The 3DS, DSi, and DS XL are all at least compatible but those are portable units.
Good lord, ¥65 billion? That's almost $12!
Jokes aside, it's approx 837.85 million U.S. dollars according to google.
So you guys want innovative games and no more CODs and copy/paste. But when Nintendo took a risk of motion-controlled games or a 3D powerful hand-held, you say to go back to basics?
:pwn:
That's because not many gamers who made that claim also like to wave their arms around like an idiot and jump around as a form of gaming.
Except I own a Wii and serveral Wii games, Galaxy 1-2, Metroid Prime 1-3, Skyward Sword.
I don't flail my arms, I gently move my wrist, maybe if I get really into Skyward Sword I swing it like a nerd, but no, you don't have to flail the Wii, if you're doing that, you've done it wrong.
Especially with Metroid Prime, where all it does is make you look around, you really shouldn't be flailing that.
[editline]26th January 2012[/editline]
Besides, its an experimental technology, they took a risk of saying "Hey, maybe gamers would find this to be cool and new". We should be glad any company actually tries that.
[editline]26th January 2012[/editline]
Also you don't need to jump with the Wiimote.
Who does that. srsly :v:

i've had so much fun wagging my arms with my wii i don't think i could go back to normal controls as the main form. i mean some games like super smash make use of normal controls better, which they catered to with the support of classic controllers and gamecube controllers. The stuff you guys complain about comes mainly from 3rd party people who don't know how to make original products effectively.
Skyward sword really shows off what the system is capable of, and i'm hoping they implement the motion+ with the WiiU. I couldn't imagine playing the game with a normal controller, it's really a remarkable thing Nintendo have pulled off with that game, shame it got overlooked because of Skyrim.

It is gonna have both motion and that weird ass touch pad I think. I'm sure Nintendo will pull that shit off. Hate the Wii or not, you have to admit, almost every Nintendo device has been ergonomic.
I think the Wii U has a lot of potential, given how analog sticks limits a lot of games. RTS's would be way more enjoyable, off the top of my head.
I'd be very surprised.
Then you don't have much foresight.
Skyward Sword used them perfectly.
My brother said that the controls are bad, I've seen him play and it didn't look like fun at all. We both like how it worked in Twilight Princess better. They should save the motion plus for certain things and keep the main controls simple. Metroid Prime 3 had good controls too for what it needed and anyone who plays Brawl with motion controls is doing it wrong.
It's about time they stopped the retarded gimmicks and started making proper gaming controllers with more powerful gaming machines so that the developers won't be so limited in terms of graphics and content.
Then you end up with even more games that are more poorly optimized and polished than what they are right now. Not saying that all games are like that. Limits are sometimes good to have.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Nintendo go like Sega if the Wii U fails.
I doubt that it would fall because of the Wii U or 3DS. Even if it did, this could be bad news for the video game market in general. I don't think the market can handle losing a big company like Nintendo. Same goes for Microsoft and Sony.
