a brown-haired white male straight out of every video game
Jfc, who fucking cares? Just focus on the gameplay and whether that "white male everyman" is an interesting character.
Funny...

Truly crazy to see two different opinions on the same game.

You care about them being white and male?

Don't make me snigger.
You care about them being white and male?
Well I mean to be fair the perspective of the review may be coming from a Dark Souls player.
Where you can easily make a vaguely female flat-faced blue orc creature from the lagoon with the creator.
I do, actually, yeah.
I would like some damn variety for once. Especially being able to play as a woman. That's not a terribly common thing in games.

How about you try Dishonored 2, Prey, Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge, Overwatch, Quake Champions, Battlefront, Battlefield 1, Nier Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bayonetta, Rust, Nioh, For Honor, Persona 5, Mafia 3, basically every RPG and other billion games out there that have female characters and/or different races ?
You care about them being white and male?
yeah, actually, kinda. not even taking social politics/representation into account, i'm just kinda tired of every other modern video game character being the same John Videogames dude. an interesting main character design can do a lot to make me interested in a game, and the surge's protag is as generic and uninspired as character designs can get. i wouldn't count it against the game in a review, of course, it would just be better if he were unique in any way.
Personally I'm kinda disappointed that there's no customization.
Not because the default MC is a generic square headed white dude, but the fact that the game exists to bring Souls gameplay into its own as a genre that stands on its own, and customization was a big part of it in the context of Souls.

As far as I can tell, it certainly looks like the gear is the main source of customization. I am fine with that, let's be honest. Your character in a Souls or Bloodborne game is mostly defined by his gear and perhaps the haircut. Similar to Destiny as well.
I do not mind it but I agree some customization would be great.

Games where you make your own character in an RPG and storyless FPS games don't even count.
Not to mention I'm pretty sure Persona 5, Mafia 3, and Nioh don't actually have a playable female character. Your gender is random in Rust too so that doesn't count either. I don't know where you got that list but it's not exactly the best list you could have used.
I care if the character's generic and don't have much of a story of their own to tell because at that point they're interchangeable with countless other protagonists of the same caliber across so many damn games out there. If they have, you know, a character, I don't really care who or what they are so long as some standout trait isn't shoved in my face like "SEE THEY'RE [x] AND YET LOOK HOW COOL THEY ARE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY"
i feel like we're all overlooking the fact here that the game is not good and you don't find this out until about 3 hours in

Not a common thing eh ? Alright let's look at some 2017 games that let you play as either female or non-white characters.
Prey
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Injustice 2
Horizon Zero Dawn
For Honor
Ghost Recon Wildlands
Nier Automata
Night in the Woods
Quake Champions
Resident Evil VII
And we're not even done with the first half of this year.

is the witcher 3 inherently unenjoyable for you because it is set in a pagan fantasy setting with slavic-looking people?

game gets frustratingly difficult the instant you get to the second area, speaking as someone who has played souls games
enemies do too much damage for how much healing you get and don't stagger for shit
bloodborne is better

If you look again, you may notice the person I was replying to was mentioning variety in "sex, gender, skin color, etc." and I made a short list covering all of that.
BTW, I like the new title.

So let me get this straight.
It doesn't count when you get to pick your gender. It also doesn't count when you don't get to pick your gender. RPGs do not count for some bloody reason. Making your own character does not count.
What the fuck does count then ?

BB is better, I agree. I'm on the the third area and still have yet to hit that wall. Have you been upgrading your gear?

Are we really going to include RE7 when it's just one short sequence in the main game and a 20-30 minute DLC that put you in the shoes of one of the female characters?

Yes.

all of my shit is mk1 to start with and i'd have to grind for scrap and parts against the pain in the ass enemies that are giving me trouble in the first place
isn't the last tier of enemies supposed to prepare you for the next tier
