I don't know if this is the right place, but...
I want to know... What OS (Windows and Linux) should i use for my laptop?
I have an laptop with the following specs:
AMD Brazos C-50 1.00 GHz
2 GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6250
500 GB HDD
I am considering multi booting it with Linux. Using Windows XP, 7 or 8.
As for Linux, i want to know of a lightweight distro.
Formerly i used Windows 7 to play Garry's Mod and FSX on it (they worked fine, but i don't believe on gaming performance W7). Though i'm thinking of shifting to 8, but i'm not sure as it is only a 1.00 GHz dual core processor. Maybe i should use Windows XP?
On my desktop, i have the following Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 220
80 GB HDD (Windows XP and Windows 8)
500 GB HDD (Windows data and the rest for Lubuntu)
The problem is, on the desktop Garry's Mod closes to desktop on Linux for some reason. Though i am capable of playing Rage and X-Plane 10 (both via Wine) on a almost fine framerate.
What is the reason for this to happen?
Anyway, i want to know what Windows version and what Lightweight Linux distro i should use. And i want to play Garry's Mod on the Linux OS.
Any suggestions?
GentooLinux is a lightweight distro. I would reccommend it to anyone.

This, Gentoo's quite possibly the best solution for your situation.

Maybe i should use Windows XP?

Did you seriously just suggest moving to XP? I dont mean to be rude but... Windows is dropping support for it sometime next year. Its riddled with security holes and bugs too.

Is Garry's Mod going to work on it? Because i used various Linux distros on my desktop and while loading a server it has closed to desktop, while on Windows it worked fine.

I don't know. Maybe because it is more lightweight. I never used Windows 8 on this laptop, just Windows 7.
windows xp is hardly more lightweight in actual use. stick with 8, as it uses less RAM. something you're lacking in
Arch or Debian and some time configuring them for best performance would be the best solution.
Also my laptop is more shitty than yours, and Win8 runs fine. So stick with it. XP is old crap.
Don't take the gentoo people seriously. They're joking.
Look into different Linux flavors that match your fancy. Ubuntu is really windows-like and some of its offshoots like Xbuntu are really good.
Archlinux is bare-bones and "do it yourself" kind of mentality, leaves lots of room for configuration. As well as frustration for those who are poor at following instructions.
You're going to have to research one yourself as we don't really know how familiar you are with computers.
Any distribution can run Garrys mod, so don't worry about that.
If I were to recommend any single distro: I'd go with Xbuntu. It's a good mix between complexity and simplicity.

I'm not joking about Gentoo. I'm deadly serious. While I dont expect the guy to sit through the invigorating compiling process that comes with Gentoo I do expect that he try out using Sabayon.

Good lightweight distros: Gentoo (yes, seriously), Xubuntu.
I've always referred to Gentoo as "hard mode" for Linux, what with there being no install wizard to guide you through it, and testing branch (~x86 or ~amd64, depending) even harder because sometimes packages don't get along. But the advantages are that your install of whatever program only has features that you're going to use, and also has the usual advantages of compiling everything yourself (and the disadvantages as well, though that's mainly just time). Xubuntu has the ease of use of an Ubuntu variant, but has two disadvantages - everything you install has all the extra bells and whistles in it (which may or may not bother you, depends on who you are), and using it supports Canonical, which I'd personally rather not do because Shuttleworth's a fucking prick.
Distros to avoid include main Ubuntu, as well as Kubuntu, just because they're pretty much the opposite of lightweight. I would also advise against a Red Hat variant (including Fedora) because SELinux is by default both turned on and restrictive as fuck, so it's just a righteous pain in the ass, and I advise against Arch too, since every time I decide to try it again, it's just problem after problem after problem, and I'm not even trying to do anything interesting with it.
Windows I have no real statement on, outside of FOR FUCK'S SAKE DO NOT USE WINDOWS XP.
Well, i've installed Windows 8 here. Garry's Mod and most of the other games doesn't have a very good performance, for some reason. Should i return to Windows 7 (even if i HATE it) or go to XP?
About GMod on Linux, i'm considering using Precise Puppy with the latest AMD Drivers (using the official installer) with the following autoexec settings: http://pastebin.com/1jBAMtfy

I'm very disappointed. Despite the warnings from fellow facepucnhers you still insist on suggesting XP as a potential operating system for your PC. Also despite the recommendations of other facepunchers you have installed an operating system that is non-free software and hurts your freedom as a computer user. Instead of you controlling the software, the software controls you!
Blessed be saint stallman.
i doubt you're ever going to get good performance in Source with that laptop.
Fine, let's forget XP then.
Should i try Puppy?

Before shifting to 8, i had.
Your talking about puppyLinux?
Of course. Precise Puppy.

No.
Have you tried the other distros people have suggested?
Sabayon?
Debian (What version would be recommended)?
OpenSUSE?
Arch (Manjaro/Archbang/Antergos)?
Slackware?

Try them all and see which one fits you best. There is also not really a recommended version of Debian except for the latest however I suggest you also try out Crunchbang which is just Debian with a packaged and polished desktop.
You also need to be aware of the fact that you might verywell find your self using different distros on different computers. I myself use many different distros on different computers (Ubuntu, Crunchbang, Arch, Debian).

Very well. I'll try a Debian-based distro. People say that if using debian correctly, it stays lightweight. Maybe i'll try Debian Sid with JWM? Otherwise i'll try one of these with Fluxbox.

Sure. Debian can stay lightweight if you know how to care for it but the same goes for Arch, Sabayon, etc.
Goahead and try Debian with JWM. At the end of the day it just comes down to how much time and effort your willing to put into setting up the environment to your liking.

I was considering Puppy because of JWM, but i believe there are another distros that come with the WM. Also, i heard JWM is a very lightweight WM.

Another thing you need to consider is how lightweight is lightweight for you. Find something that balances functionality with memory/processor usage and try not to get caught up in finding something that is "lightweight". A lightweight wm for me is Openbox. I've never used JWM so I cant offer any helpful things on it.

Yeah, i'll remember this. Anyway, i'll try to test the autoexec config here on my desktop to see if helps.
Maybe Crunchbang or Ubuntu

I have Lubuntu on my desktop. I'll make some tests on my desktop, so i guess if any one of these i've mentioned fails, i'll go to Lubuntu.
I've had a pretty good time with Linux Mint.
Crunchbang is pretty good, it runs really well on my old netbook.
What you should use?
Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Debian or Xubuntu.
What are you going to use?
Windows 8.
if you already have 7, keep it, no need to change as it's great as is
if not, w8
