The Iraqi army and Sunni tribal fighters are expected to take on ISIL in the coming days, with the US-led coalition providing them with air support. Osama al-Nujaifi, Iraqi vice president, and Khaled al-Obeidi, defence minister, who are both from Mosul, have been visiting Erbil to gain the support of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces for the planned offensive in Mosul. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Gwer, in northern Iraq.
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2015/01/iraqi-army-readies-assault-mosul-2015110164639347982.html Apologies for the low content, this article came out three hours ago
Hopefully they've had some time to regroup and shape up.
Hopefully this goes well. And Mosul is taken back. It could be a major milestone in the war against ISIS and could cause them to collapse in Iraq, since from what I know, most of their operations in Iraq are ordered from Mosul.
Guaranteed to stall way before any achievements are made. If they can't retake Ramadi or Fallujah they surely cannot retake Mosul which is larger and more defended.
Looks like the Peshmerga will be taking part, they've done a number on ISIS already, hope they take back Mosul. I wonder if the Iranian Air Force will be helping with this, they've supported both the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in other parts of Iraq with airstrikes, same with US and coalition air power. This conflict sure has brought out the most unlikely of "allies". Hope all goes well, beat these bastards back to Syria, then hopefully beat them there too.
Wasn't the last Iraqi attack a total failure? Hopefully they do better this time.
Wasn't the last Iraqi attack a total failure? In the PR department most citizens and the tribals LOVE the ISF, aside from various units still fleeing at the sign of combat they've held ground and gained ground. Nor do I think the ISF has actually attacked Mosul aside from when ISIS originally captured it, but the risk of loosing Mosul is one the worst things ISIS would ever have for them. Almost all the cities' utilities are fucked up, ISIS leveraging high prices and taxes on locals within the city, forcing children into their ranks, bullying etc, but more importantly if the ISF and Peshmerga recapture Mosul it basically means they can refocus on the Anbar province and them promptly securing their boarders. If all goes well the ISIS' only breeding ground for money, fighters, weapons, etc will be in Eastern Syria and very small pockets in Libya. In honest Mosul actually has a fair number of it's residence who hate ISIS but can't actaully fight back due the numbers they have in that city, last I read about Mosul's citizens is that there is growing dissent as many start realizing ISIS is fucking up hardcore and cannot support what they claim.
Is that a british .50 cal and MK6 helmet? As far as I know we brits stick handle-bars on our .50s for whatever reason. Oh and best of luck to them I hope they run them the fuck out of Iraq soon.
Plus let me add that is ISIS is probably one of the worst defending forces in the history of ever. Almost any village that is attacked by the Pesh,ISF, or SAA tend to get taken back within a few hours due to the ISIS militants fucking off or getting utterly massacred. Like it's not even funny about how bad many of their militants die defending or attacking any position, apparently last nights attack on Gwer within Iraqi Kurdistan several hundred ISIS militants were killed compared to a couple dozen Pesh and local defenders. Kobane is a damn good example is how so far only about 550ish Kurdish/FSA defenders have managed to take out 1.5k ISIS attackers along with US airstrikes tacking on another 1000+
As a Dyslexic, I can honestly say I thought they were planning to assault the moon before reading the article.

Mosul has been in the hands of ISIS for quiet some time. With recent videos from Kobani showing the IEDs in use with ISIS are simple pot bombs with weight detection, I can imagine that most of their true industrial force is dedicated to holding out at Mosul. If that's the case. We might be on the edge of seeing an Okinawa-scale battle erupting. Mosul has been in the Islamic State's hands for roughly five to seven months now... That's more then enough time to turn the entire city into a fortified doomfort. Enough time to create tunnels through out the city for asymmetrical warfare, enough time for a lot of things. The only hope now is that the citizens in Mosul take up arms and begin destroying their capability from within. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and suffering the Iraqi people are going to be put into with this battle.
Best of luck to them
Good luck fellas.

I really think someone to unite against was what the area needed, and it's good that a somewhat secular government is the one with the backing.
