• Crappy performance in certain situations.

I have a brand new Galaxy 8400GS 512MB in my computer. It can run most games fine like CoD4 in most situations, most Source games, and I even played Stalker on Full Dynamic with 20+ FPS. Unfortunately, the card does have drawbacks. specs: AMD Athlon 3.2GHz Black Edition Dual Core Processor 4GB Patriot RAM, I believe DDR2 or such Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer ASUS Crosshair Mobo 720W PSU of some make I can't remember. Was reputable, had 4 eggs on NewEgg. 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda 320GB HDD HP dvd400i DVD Writer Thermaltake Armor LCS Case So with that out of the way, here's my issue. I setup the card with the idea that I needed something to haul me over lightweight gaming (HL1 lagged on my backup PC) while I wait for my 8800GT to come back from the RMA. It runs GMod and EP2 fine at medium-high at 50+ FPS. But the real issue is how fucking horrible the lag gets when particles/grass/any alpha texture is rendered on the screen. Like on World at War, solid 40+ FPS on all low settings. But dare I look at more than two trees, I get 10FPS max. It's awful. Even Garry's Mod chugs along when I'm within a meter or so of the particles (otherwise no significant impacts). It's very stuttery with VSync forced on in WaW with 30FPS or greater. Now ever since I removed my 8800GT, the only system change has been a wipe of drivers, installed new 8400GS, installed CD-ROM drivers, then went up to newest 190.38 drivers. Like I said, it runs most games absolutely great with 40+ FPS or so, but if any excess of grass/trees/fences show up, it lags like a motherfucker. Things I've tried: Toying around with Nvidia Control Panel. No effect. Lowered resolution. 10-20+ FPS addition. Overclocking card. 3-5FPS increase with +30 on all clocks. Idled at ~52C. Too hot under load. Different PCIe slot. The one it's in right now, the primary one, is chock full of dried, crusty liquid coolant because my CPU block bolts get loose. No effect. No forms of AA are on, but even with 4X AA, the FPS drops are negligible enough in CoD at 1280x800. Does anyone have any idea why alpha textures are chugging up the card? Here's the card itself on Galaxy's website (Galaxy being the manufacturer) http://www.galaxytech.com/en/productview.aspx?id=%2074 Again, I have the 512MB edition
It's a 8400 you should be happy that you can play new games at all.
It's a 8400 you should be happy that you can play new games at all.
oh look he has a low profile card thats not for gaming it must not be able to output 3d at all Come on. I can play Far Cry 2 and Stalker. It's not shit. It just chugs in certain situations
Because it's not powerful enough. It's that simple.
you bought a weak card and you're now bitching that it's weak. I fail to see the point of the thread.
It's your graphics card no doubt.
you bought a weak card and you're now bitching that it's weak. I fail to see the point of the thread.
I was expecting it for light gaming. It runs games absolutely fine. It's not weak, it just chews up FPS when there are trees and grass about. I can crank out 60+ FPS on Max with 4xAA on CoD4.
Can you go into Nvidia control panel, then on advanced mode, go on "Manage 3D settings" and show what settings you're using.
Light gaming is Source, not fucking Far Cry 2 or COD4. Anyways what you're experiencing is the GPU rendering out objects in the game out slowly. Wanna know why? Because its a crappy card, even if it is a placeholder until your other one comes back.

Far Cry 2 at low settings, 15FPS! How awful of a card! It can run CoD4 at max with 4xAA, lagging only when trees and grass are about! What an awful card!
what res are you playing, 800x600? I have the same pile of shit lyring around here, with medium settings @ 1024x768 on CoD4 I got 50FPS when looking at the sky, 20 when firing a gun with little on screen or just being in creek and 10 when firing in creek
That looks a hell of alot worse than the ultra high on my computer.
I can't run dynamic lights or spec maps or the FPS drops a hell of a lot.
