• Sometimes can't shutdown/restart

Sometimes, like now, I can't restart my computer or shutdown. I can only shutdown when I use the power button. Don't know what caused this but it's been happening regurarly now. Sometimes it does work and I can shutdown or restart without any trouble... I'm using XP.
Try these three things: Scan for viruses, if a virus is found, restart computer (with power button if needed) and see if the problem is fixed after the computer has been restarted If that doesn't work, make sure you have all the latest Windows updates, especially the latest service pack. If it still doesn't work after that, open command prompt (start>run and type cmd) and type into the command prompt "sfc /scannow" without quotation marks

Some program is preventing XP from going into the shutdown or restart process. That only began in vista where it would say that X is preventing me from shutting down/restarting. Closing down as many programs as you can before doing it would help.

As it sometimes works the file is there and working. It has to be a program preventing it as windows does not add a forced flag to the program when it starts.

Woutsie, when the shutdown doesn't work. Open command prompt and type in:
shutdown /s /f
The /f parameter forces running programs to close, so we can see if it is definitely a program preventing the shutdown. If you leave it like above and press enter it will commence shutdown 30 seconds later. You could also type this:
shutdown /s /f /t 5
Where 5 is the number of seconds before it starts shutting down. [editline]22nd August 2011[/editline] Though if the integrity scan and virus scan fix the problem, theres no need to do this.

It is something else that is preventing it from running. He needs to find out what is causing it and kill the process to make it shut down normally.
thank you guys i will rate you all one screwdriver im still scanning for spyware and virus since i got a bsod!
bsod is usually a hardware error, not spyware. If you post the stop code (usually something like 0x00007f) We can help you figure out what caused the problem.
A bsod can sometimes be a virus. I've known a few cases where someone got a virus and their computer started having BSODs
I scanned for spyware and viruses and 3 weeks no problems Today it is back  I try to fix it with shutdown /s /f
And shutdown /s /f worked.
