A CANADIAN man has shot dead eight people, including two children, at three locations before killing himself. The tragedy unfolded in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, in the western province of Alberta. Seven of those killed — three women, two men and the two children — were found in the same house, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said. The eighth victim was a woman. One body was found at a home in the city’s southwest and the last was found in Fort Saskatchewan, about 25 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. Sources told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) that the nine bodies were found at the three separate and connected crime scenes
http://www.news.com.au/world/canadian-man-kills-eight-people-including-two-children-in-edmonton-before-committing-suicide/story-fndir2ev-1227171034905
the fuck is going on.
I wish more people paid attention to the stigma mental health has these days, it seems a lot of people are just passed off as assholes when they are depressed or are ignored until they snap and kill themselves or others. When someone is depressed or has any issue like this they should be taken more seriously because pretty much all mass killings like this stem from neglect.
The suspected killer, whose relatives said was suicidal, then headed to a residence in the north of the city, where he killed another seven people.
I cannot really say more than this.. It just screams such a red flag. A whole shitty situation all around. RIP.
Ugh this is terrible news to hear, especially for anyone involved. Simply awful and painful.
Seriously, why do these people feel the need to go on these shooting sprees before offing themselves? Why spread their misery to others by killing completely innocent people? Do they think that by lashing out at the world they're somehow getting revenge for the 'wrongs' they may or may not have been given? As if murdering children is the right way to go about things. Jesus Christ. So fucking petty.
I think with some people it's leaving a legacy. Fame and Infamy go hand in hand with some. *shrug*
This happened like 10 minutes from me, I remember seeing A ASSLOAD of cruisers when driving home so this must've been where they were going

It's really tragic that he decided to take innocent people with him. Thankfully Canada has a responsible government right now that isn't going to have a knee-jerk reaction and try to blame guns, video games, etc.

Instead of focusing on the weapons, or tools we may or may not use every day to complete tasks or for hobbies, we should focus on peoples conditions. It's unbelievable how people will use this story as a cry out to ban firearms without looking at the consequences as to what it's going to bring, rather than cry out to mistreatment and lack of aid towards the mentally ill.

From my understanding, you recently had some progress rolling back the long gun registry and some restrictions regarding gun shows, do you think this a sign of positive change to come?

Canadian perception of firearms is pretty negative, most people are anti-gun. Police departments are pissed off at the Conservatives for repealing it, Toronto says that firearms seizures dropped by 40% due to the repealed long gun registry, and now are paying more money than the 2 million dollars the long gun registry costed, to compensate for the loss. There aren't too many manufacturers in Canada either, so there isn't really a lobbying group to push stuff through Parliament.

I think we're making progress towards eliminating magazine capacity restrictions though. Currently you can only have 5 rounds in a centerfire semi-auto rifle, but AR-15 pistols are allowed to have 10 rounds in their magazines, so people buy those magazines because they fit in any rifle that takes AR-15 magazines. As well, people buy AR-15 magazines intended to hold 5 rounds of .50 Beowulf but load 15 rounds of .223 into them and they feed nearly flawlessly. As for licensing, that's not an issue to me because I believe you should have a license to own a gun, but everything else needs an overhaul, especially the classification system because it's just so arbitrary. It's as if the RCMP watch a bunch of 80s action movies and decided that the guns the bad guys use are going to be prohibited. They've also prohibited the H&K G11 by name even though nobody in the world except for a museum will ever be able to own one, much less source ammunition for it, which just proves how retarded they are.

I don't hear too much about Canadian gun politics around here. I always thought that you guys found a nice middle-ground (with a few exceptions). I had no idea that AR-15s and other guns were banned based on cosmetic features though, I thought that kind of stuff was limited to the US (and maybe Britain/Australia).

Its weird hearing about those gun bans, I walked into West Edmonton Mall, in a far corner is a gun shop/range and inside was a mag fed .50 cal for $7000 so why in the heck is it not banned? [thumb]http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u423/Lawblind/0557DB18-2942-42C9-9445-BC5601D19F55_zpszpuxnvuw.jpg[/thumb] Took a picture because my dad and I have been tossing around the idea of buying one for years. Guns laws are pretty dumb
.50 cals are perfectly legal and used for long-range competitive shooting. They're also treated no different than a hunting rifle in terms of legality. In reality, even with all the destructive power it has, they are expensive as balls, loud as fuck, gigantic, and weigh a crapload, no criminal in their right mind is going to use one for anything. Why isn't it banned? Banning .50 cal in a blanket ban would have hit muzzeloader shooters hard, since most are .50. Banning .50 and above hits collectors by banning old anti-tank rifles and it could potentially ban shotguns with a rifled barrel, which are used for deer hunting. Instead, the government at the time banned a number of .50 cal rifles out at the time by name, like the Barrett M82 and M90, and the Gepard Anti-Materiel Rifle. This means ones that came out after the 1995 bans, like the Steyr HS50 in your picture, or just ones that weren't popular at the time and therefore went unnoticed, are still perfectly legal. An interesting note for foreigners, chances are quite high .50 cals are legal in your country too. I know you can actually still own one in Britain.
