Japanese police have arrested a 61-year-old man accused of stealing more than 1,100 library books. Officials say Mitsuka Suizu was initially arrested in July for taking a few books from the public library in Nagato, in western Japan. When police searched his home in the city of Ube, Suizu admitted to taking 1,170 books over a seven-year period, and stashing them at home, where he lived with his wife and two children. The estimated value of the paperbacks? More than $25,000. "He loves books," Nagato police spokesman Yosuke Miyoshi told ABC News. "He didn't just want to read them. He wanted them by his side." Miyoshi said the volumes, taken from 15 local libraries, ranged from encyclopedias to history books and books about insects. Suizu was fully employed until his arrest in July, and visited various libraries during his work breaks. "None of [the libraries] had security gates, so he was able to get by relatively unnoticed," Miyoshi said. Librarians have identified 896 of those books as their own so far. Miyoshi says police are still trying to track down where the remaining 274 books came from.
"He loves books," Nagato police spokesman Yosuke Miyoshi told ABC News. "He didn't just want to read them. He wanted them by his side."
Sounds like a mental disorder to me.
Fuck this guy, in a few years, I'll have more than 1,100+ manga volumes and I'll not even steal them! Yes, I know he took books, but I rarely read books anymore, any of them I've been interested in I've already picked up.
"He loves books," Nagato police spokesman Yosuke Miyoshi told ABC News. "He didn't just want to read them. He wanted them by his side."
i don't know why, but this sentence made me feel all fuzzy inside it sounds like the plot for a studio ghibli film
Kleptomaniac.
Sounds like a mental disorder to me.
People surround themselves with stuff they love all the time... I think when they say "He wanted them by his side" it's more of a "He collects books"
Some big library should employ him full time if he promised he would keep the books where they should be. He could work there, tending over the books and maybe stay at night as a warden. It sounds like he would be happy and the books would get good handling.
People surround themselves with stuff they love all the time... I think when they say "He wanted them by his side" it's more of a "He collects books"
I have at least 2,000 books under my name at my house. I never give them or sell them off and I've been buying books since I don't even remember. Though a good portion of that number I received from my grandfather when he died. I have a terrible compulsion to buy books and I would guess that only a third of them I've actually read all the way through. Most of the time I read halfway until I find another book and start it.

Aw bless him. I just want to send him books.
He shouldn't be jailed for this, it's a mental disorder, give him some theorpy. Although sadly for him this will probably reflect on his job and employers in japan are very strict.
I don't think its a mental disorder, the original article was probably in Japanese and it may have translated roughly. 'he just wants the books by his side' might sound odd to us, but maybe it translated differently in Japanese. It seems like this guy just loved reading and wanted to keep what he read as a memoir.
A Japanese Uncle Leo.
Reminds me of that one Twilight Zone episode.
the end to a disney movie
More like a Studio Ghibli movie.
Reminds me of the girl from Fullmetal Alchemist who got fired from her job as a librarian and has her house full of books. Sheska is her name.
the end to a disney movie
but hes a parent therefore he has to die before the end if this to be a disney movie
I hope there's a library in hell because there's going to be a book burning when he's dead!!! no but seriously, pretty interesting that he'd do that :v:
but hes a parent therefore he has to die before the end if this to be a disney movie
Well, not every parent dies at the end of a disney movie. Remember "Tarzan"? Sure, Tarzan's adoptive dad died, but Jane's dad and Tarzan's foster mom were still alive at the end.
Reminded me of this
Reminds me of that one Twilight Zone episode.
Damn.
I just stole 1,100 bicycles simply because I love bicycles!
Woah. I've done this too
Not a big surprise, as librarianship student this is somewhat normal: My Sources and Citations professor is a well know bibliophile. You can't lend him a book or you are asking for never see it again, he was fired from his library because he took over the years arround 500 books and other things (but in the end he pay for every single book). His collection is over 7000 books from all ages and types and since he is a man with alot of money he buys most of the discard collection (when a book is outdated it goes to a special warehouse or room, every library got one) from nearly every library in the city. He is a cool person.
